Edited by: stoicfaux on 06/07/2011 13:39:43 Does that mean Planetside 2 is coming you in X hours?
Or does it mean that the Planetside 2 website will be up in X hours?
Or is someone mean playing with my emotions by generating false hope that Planetside 2 will see the light of day?
edit: Bah, it's just an announcement. More info here.

Finally an MMO I can actual peak interest in.
Finally some skill base is back again.
Next you'll tell me they're making DAOC 2.

So its official(ish) now there is a sequel in the works, I wonder how confident CCP are feeling about DUST now.

Dust will be free and on consoles. PS2 is not going to be free and will be for the PC.

Dust will be free and on consoles. PS2 is not going to be free and will be for the PC.
Also, in the original Planetside, you had 200 to 300 people fighting together at once on a small continent (really a large island.) And during the glory days, several continents would be population locked.
I don't see DUST (or any other multi-player console team based FPS) as competing in that niche.

Nothing quite like a Tech Plant Alamo. Especially if you held the courtyard well enough to find someone suicidal enough to galaxy drop an ANT in to keep the place fueled.

Always fun to siege a tech plant's airpads with a Burster AA Max.

I tended to be in that ant.
Or when they did a gal drop on an enemy base I would be in the back with a lightning with the chain gun ready for action when I landed in the middle of their infantry

I tended to be the suicidal pilot, hugging low to avoid AA getting a clean lock. afterburning over the base. usually losing the galaxy in the process but all that mattered was fueling the base typically in a siege. Especially once they got the shields on the doors to the CY. a fueled base could be tough to crack. sadly the expansion that gave the shields also gave those game killers known as the BFRs.

I was frequently on continents that had pop locks for both sides, and that means there were a LOT of people on there. I think 200 to 300 people is a bit of an understatement over all, it'd be closer to 600 to 700 people, I think? I'm not sure how many people per side could be on a continent at once...

I am going to say as far as battle scale, I do not think any PVP MMO has surpassed planetside at its true peak. I know some EVE blobs can get big but when you got a true faction smashup in PS the fighting could get pretty insane.
NC Support player here.
AMS, Lodestar, Galaxy, Combat Engineer.
the Bang Bus/Thunderbus(Sunderer) was also good fun
playing gunner in a Vanguard and scoring that sheer luck 150mm hit on a Reaver was always satisfying in its end result.

Is this being used in the context of the starcraft race, zerg, or the act of zerging a target?
Because there is plenty of zerging to be had in planetside...

I say he means the act of Zerging. Bang Buses, galaxies and Lodestars are all elements of people thinking about battle tactically. Planetside was fueled by the Zerg. thos guys running out of my AMS, Heavy Assault in hand to go die ten seconds later and keep going, the fodder that kept enemies distracted while organized outfits hit the CC and hacked it.

EVE has larger numbers in a fight but a planetside battle would have hundreds fighting it out over a base for days if it was well defended. What always impressed me was that the chain of command worked and just about everyone followed orders yet we all did our own thing at the same time.

I hold lots of fond memories from PS. I sucked at flying, but loved maning a Vanguard's main turret, or launching sparrow missiles at everything above the ground. Left before the whole BFR mess, however.
I can't wait for PS2, but this time I'll be on the Terran side, I think. Black and Red is just superior. ------------------------------------------

favoured the prowler myself when not doing suicidal infantry vanguards. Prob why I play pyro in Tf2 as well :p
Hopefully no or very restricted BFRs this time round.

BFRs were weak. Three to four decimators would send a BFR running for repairs. A Pounder MAX outranged (most?) BFRs, so again a single person with a basic cert could drive off a BFR.

when they first came out they where not weak at all. they got weak after the nerfbat got swung at them. problem is the damage was done on release.
