Sometimes, we love to fly shiny ships in combat, and most of the T3s that I've seen in combat seem to make use of faction modules. Now, I understand some of the reasons for this including optimal fitting based on available CPU and cap stability. However, I was wondering if it's a good idea to make use of just T2 modules for combat as well. What are the pros and cons in taking this approach for PVP?

if you're going to spend nearly half a billion isk on a ship for pvp, you should definitely spend more than 20 million isk on fittings. Some faction mods give very good performance increase over t2 considering the isk spent. Hardeners use less cpu and can overload better. Faction tackle mods perform very well, especially when overloaded.

Edited by: Daneel Trevize on 01/05/2011 23:26:05 I've flown a t2/meta4 cloaky Proteus for well over a year now I think and racked up plenty of kills and no losses in it. It's mostly about getting the ship in the situation it's best suited to. I've recently put some isk into the tank, and am considering the tackle too, but it's a slippery slope, a few 100m total added and you're most of the way to a replacement should it die.
I'd go with a non-gimped t2/cheap faction fit first to see you like the thing, pimp it later once you're happy with it. I've done with same with a loki I then rebuilt before putting more isk in once I'd seen the new fit shine, and similarly held back on a non-cloaky proteus before deciding it wasn't working and sold it before I'd put more than a few mil beyond T2 into it (wtf's with 'Gattotte' boosters going from 10m to 100m a few months back btw?!).
Oh yeah, a long time back my first T3 and pvp ship was a cloaky scanny legion with a corpum a-type repper, I was never too keen dragging that much isk around because if it ever wasn't ganking something pve, it'd die to a basic cane. |

It would depend on the ship/fit/role.
Some full T3 fits are pretty good, although it is advisable to use a little bit of faction.
I mean some faction mods are really really cheap if you look into it.
And faction mods are good, not just for the plain stats, but they can be overloaded forever compared to t2.

Generally I think with faction items you should take a calculated view on fitting them.
Forget the idea of fitting because it looks cool and focus on how much bang for the buck you get.

Some of the T3 fits are horribly tight on fitting requirements, e.g. a high dps twin-web armour tank loki, and pretty much force you to either use faction mods (due to their lower fitting requirements) or compromise somewhat on the fitting. You just can't quite fit them T2/meta4.

Consider what you are fitting for. Then see if fitting that particular faction item will make you better at it. It is as simple as that. _______________________ The best thing in EvE is Barrage M. |
