There were some about a year ago that really screwed things up but the current ones or 2nd most current work fine for me. I'm using 11.2 atm.

i was using the newer ones but was getting weird stuttering frame rates whenever i was zoomed in to my ship, so i started looking at older drivers when the 4800 was more current. was using 10.10e drivers and they seemed better, but i get this crazy flickering from the sun a lot, so i need to find something else.

Well at least some 2xxx and 3xxx owners have been having different kind of issues with anything newer than 10.10 which is last one using the "old" catalyst center (systray icon got white ati logo on red background).
Most common problem with newer drivers is random blue screen with error pointing to ati2dvag.dll but also many other issues have been mentioned...
I don't know if this is any issue on 4xxx series, but still good to know I guess...

So, after almost two decades the old "Ati drivers are ****" still applies and people still buy and defend that crap?

Yeah I had an issue with drivers for a few months, was about a year ago. Had major corruption with chracter graphics and occasional other bugs but now its all peachy. Good to see me 4870 still going strong.

I buy and defend nvidia products because I have been using both (brands) since the 20th century and nvidia cards are unambiguously better. .

im getting a new computer once i get the money for it, atm i got a 3.4 quad and a 5870, but its so annoying with the dual monitor screen flicker that ATI refuse to fix, also its so bloody annoying when your mouse crusor image corrupts wich ati still refuses to fix and you have to restart for a temp fix. So annoying how i have to turn off my second monitor once the screen starts flickering.
also MOST games are made for Nvidia, they are mainly coded for nvidia so ATI has some slight compatability issues and its really a downer, i had many many problems with starcraft 2 for example because of my 5870, for some moments the game would run at 5 fps which was a ATI issue with the game, they have yet sorta fixed it but it can still happen.
so my next computer im thinking of getting 4x 1tb raid 0+1 - some kind of i7 - ddr3 ram prob 1600 - and one of the latest Nvidia card since they actualy put effort into their drivers......... i loved my last 9600 GT, even with the performance boost with the 5870 i still look back to the good old 9600

Internet journalism at its best. I mean the explosion in the video was amazing. I heard the two overclockers barely escaped with their lives...
Also an incredible scientific breakthrough: operating hardware outside specifications can result in damage. So far everyone thought the specifications were just irrelevant fluff made up by the engineers to feel superior.

tbh from personal experience BOTH brands have problems with drivers.
nowadays with ATI going farther away from the approach that made the 3xxx and 4xxx series more desirable than NV (mainstream prices for great performance), and going yet again the NV way (monolithic approach), they tend to have nearly equal performances and nearly equally stupid high prices. ---

I have both nvidia and ati on laptop/desktop and i can say that the only advantage is that nvidia has better support in linux (through the nvidia binary blob ofc).

Nvidia's CUDA system is used by some media converters. If you have a multi GB video file to converter a CUDA capable converter will do it a lot faster.

Only ever made one foray into teh world of ATI graphics cards and what a utter disaster that was TBH.
Granted it was not strictly a ATI issue, but due to some kind of annoying as hell driver issue I swore off them (card maker had a flag set in cards firmware so it could only use their crapy driver, could not even use the base ATI drivers).
After a couple of motnhs trying to work around it I gave up, got sick of 2 or 3 machine crashes per day. ========= "I am not saying there should be capital punishment for stupidity, but why can`t we just take the safety labels off everything and let the problem fix its self |

Edited by: NightmareX on 05/04/2011 09:16:47 I also own a Sapphire Radeon HD 4870 1GB card.
But i wouldn't use an old driver, simply because with newer drivers, ATI have fixed alot of graphic / performance issues with different games games.
So i always runs on the latest driver.
