A wonderful decision, making recustomization free AND adding much wanted features such as tattoos and accessories.
I wonder if this was planned from the beginning (in which case you should have made it clear) or decided after all the whining and moaning? Either way, great job and thank you CCP!

One question: why no cheek piercings? We should be able to do a few more body mods than tattoos and typical facial piercings. BMEzine for reference.
Will there be any body piercings?

Those AoC tattoos is now smoking nervously in the backyard I played with new options on sisi and i must say that only wet options are piercings and new glasses. Piercings are made from smooth metal (more like aluminium) and don`t look well. But personally i`m not a fan of this nails-in-head stuff. Tattoos are awesome and their color is authentic.
ps: face textures of new character customization looks more clear and sharp. They changed to high-res or just some new shaders?

Edited by: Tipsy on 19/03/2011 13:40:49 This was my #1 feature wish for the character creator. Good job.
I hope that in the longer term CCP will allow full recustomisation of appearance without charging real-life money for it. I know the attribute remap model has been suggested. Is there a plan for this at the moment?
I'm not a fan of real-life money microtransactions - they disadvantage people on lower incomes (particularly younger people and the unemployed) and seem counter to CCP's 'expansions are free' philosophy - but ISK-based ones might both fulfil a need for more ISK sinks and sell CCP some PLEX. -- Tipsy XFI Chief of Staff |

Edited by: Flynn Fetladral on 19/03/2011 14:45:27 I think the general idea in regards to the 're-customization' is that once your born and your body grows and matures, you can't go back inside the womb and try for another shot at longer legs and a bigger slong. So why you can change your hair do, and get tattoos, new clothes like people in general on a day to day bases. You don't really get a shot at having your body rebuilt.
P.S. Good work CCP! Furthermore, I support the idea of having techo implants and such showing. I'd also like some accessories to make you look more like an actual Naval Officer, rather than a street hooligan ;-)

Great update and I am very pleased to hear it is all free. This is a big step for the game industry. Nearly every company seems to be trying to rake in money every chance they can get. With the most detailed character creator system ever, CCP isn't charging any extra to use it.
I would like the option of being able to have the no portrait Icon until I view someones Info like it was before. Only because it was very useful for keeping track of people. A new feature that works in a similar manner would be fine too. Thanks
Also, I have no idea what people are talking about with Microtransactions. The Plexes only give you isk. They wont give you items that you can only get with the plex. Back with I was playing combat arms, they started out with microtransactions that'd have you cosmetic improvements... Then they'd let you buy some gear that gave you a 'slight edge' Now they sell equipment that gives you wallhacks, flamethrowers, miniguns, grenade launchers, proxy mines, etc that you can only get through the MT system. Its bull****. They even let you kick people from the server at will. CCP hasn't done anything close to that and I don't believe they ever will.

Isnt it a bit silly to make it unlimited and free?
Im just thinking that people are gona be trying to radiaclly alter their portrait frequently as some kind of mind game in pvp.
Wouldnt it generate a worryingly bigger amount of strain on the server?
Free change once every month or so I'd understand, similar to the way attribute alteration is. But free any time? You must be confident the server can handle the extra traffic

What worryingly big amount of strain are you talking about? The image server isn't the game server and your picture changes aren't going to be updated in real time, so I'm sure the server can handle the strain. For everyone else it's just a normal loading of image that you already do for every character, something you can forcefully prevent if you think it might be causing issues.

While this is all so much awesome and kickass, it doesn't matter any more than a hill of beans to me and many others. When in H*ll are ya gonna give us a Use Random Portrait button outside of the Character Creator so that we can HAVE a portrait TO customize. Or better yet, fix whatever it is that is stopping so many of us from accessing the CC in the first place. It's been almost two months now and still nothing for those of us with the frozen-loading-bar syndrome.

How difficult would it be to allow you to select multiple body mods from the same group - for example, there is no reason not to allow an ear piercing in both ears, or a nose and an ear piercing. This could get silly if someone added all of them, yes, but for most of the options it would be beneficial to allow mixing. Tattoo + Tattoo = more tattoo options. Piercing + Piercing = piercing combinations Scar + Scar = well f***ed up, and something many players might want.
Given it seems that you have quite limited resources for creating more clothing/modifications (as hinted at by the tiny list of clothes/glasses) - if you allow mixing of options, you will in effect create a lot more variability without too much extra effort.
As an absolute minimum, you need to allow combinations of piercings, as I believe at the moment, you cannot have both ears pierced at the same time - a fairly basic option. - Vote Trebor Daehdoow for CSM and Chairman of CSM. Trebor's Campaign Manifesto |

Quit being an asshat please. You are paying for a HD stream with that PLEX and the shirt is a free gift, much like the Interbus Shuttles and the +3 to everything implants that came with the retail boxes. That they'll let you pay for a RL service with in-game money is pretty cool to begin with anyhow.
So long as I don't have to pay extra for a pole for my cyno alt chicks to dance on I'm cool with the isk for vanity items deal anyhow.

bytes dont travel the internet for free: your little unlimited 100mbit connection, pff, that is nothing compared to the juice a hd stream with a couple of thousand viewers. I'am more then happy with the pay to see HD and T-shirt deal, if I didnt have the plex for it I'd just watch in abit lower quality live and then watch the highlights on youtube when ccp upload the HD there.
I'll agree with with the 'pierce both my ears!' crowd to. Its quite basic and as been said: multi select tatoos/piercings should create interesting options with little effort. Do you want that tounge piecerd? right ear? left ear? left eyebrow? ok buddy here you go. Tatoos might look abit funky Id imagine if you overlay them but some combo of patterns have the potential for some truly unique styles ^_^

You can have quite a few piercings fitted at once, if you skip the lip piercings you can also add piercings to the chin.
I agree that having tattoos made up of multiple smaller bits would make it more interesting though.

*baffled and amazed*
A lot of people I know, myself included, were pretty bent about the way the CC implementation went down. This is a good step toward repairing some of that damage. I have to say that I really wish you'd just held on to the feature until things like tattoos, visible implants, and better clothing options were already in place. We all thought you were going to microtrans that sort of thing, which was making a lot of people very unhappy (It's not right to take something away from someone and then charge them to get it back... Well, maybe in New-Eden it is, but not in RL.).
Anyway, I'm looking forward to the feature release. Is there an ETA for publication? Also, have you made any progress toward boosting the framerate? That's the other problem people were having with the CC as I recall, and if it's an indication of the performance of the Carbon framework then I think you may have cause to be concerned....

Glad to see tattoos are finally coming soon, but I'm a little surprised no one has mentioned a little problem with scars: You can add scars to your character, but what happens if you get podded? Seems your clone would not have those scars you 'earned.' And it seems a bit silly to rush back into the CC just to put them back on.

Yeah, doesn't make sense from a role-play perspective. Hell, your med-clone doesn't even have hair when it wakes up. (Novel: Empyrean Age)

Quote: So, we have this incredible character customization system now, but you can only use it once which seems like kind of a shame, really. It would make more sense to just let you change your character whenever you're in a station. Done.
\o/ I was so happy when I read this. I'm still trying to figure out how in less then a year I went from almost giving up on CCP's communication and their apparent disconnection from their player base to the CSM player poll and all the great dev blogs, fixes, and features that have followed. Keep it coming CCP.
Also, to all the people worried about mind games with changing character portraits: stop whining. If anything, aren't such things MORE in the "sandbox" spirit of the game? Last time I checked EVE is still full of pirates, scammers, and thieves, and I wouldn't have it any other way.
One thought I had: I like that it saves the last pose your character was in, but going one step further, it might be nice to be able to save (locally) a few character "states" so you could go back between a few looks without having to recreate them each time.

Wow - Great idea/job CCP devs!
I really like the idea of "customization" - small thing changes not the facial structure. Very cool.
and its FREE! : ) Even cooler. Suprised and delighted!

This is what it's all about...giving us a little of what we want. This and Little Things have restored my faith in CCP. (The apparent death of MT helps too.) I always knew that more character creation content would be coming (there's only 5 pairs of pants in the whole galaxy?) but will player-created content be next? I'm torn on that: Yay for freedom on that one, but boo for furry costumes and deely boppers.
Either way, I'm happy with the direction things are taking in EVE.
Now, where can a Gallente girl find some transparent clothing?

We all know CCP have put a lot of development into Character Creation and in it's present form of a one-time-only mode most players simply wouldn't have gotten to appreciate it.
Thank you CCP for this change. The players asked and you delivered! This will give players more time to use the new character engine over time instead of having to learn it all in one session.

Wrong question. What you SHOULD be asking is if you can do that AT ALL.
Short answer: No.
Longer answer: It's not even an option. They don't have it implimented on sisi as far as I can tell.

This is something I am hoping can happen as well - used to rely on the cached portraits as a signifier it was someone I knew in system and then could sort from there, now it's all this reading and watching watchlists.

Yes it can, especially if you are celebrity status and having it done in a fancy, trendy shop. Just ask any rock star, celebrity, or politician.
And since we ARE the rock stars, celebrities, politicians of New Eden it wouldn't be that out of line.
Remember, just because you chose to look like a playground punk you are still considered to be the high tech equivalent of a demigod and handle millions (if not billions)of ISK daily. Fame has a price tag.
Regardless, it's still nice to see customization options available to this extent for free. ===== The world will not end in 2012, however there will be a serious nerf to Planetary Interaction. |

All great stuff and thank you CCP for allowing us to modify the portraits at will and for free. Makes me wonder if any other MMO allows this without some charge.
Please consider giving us the ability to add multiple scars and tattoos.
I understand we will not be able to do a complete sculpting redo on our characters but what happens to those accounts that already have a complete redo available? Will that complete redo still be available when this goes live?

Two quick questions:
Firstly, could we get confirmation that those characters still flagged for recustomisation from the initial deployment will remain flagged for full sculpting and skin level customisation?
Secondly, has anyone got images from Sisi of the other people for whom tatoos are really important, to the point that it was a .sig trope for a long while (ie the Gallente). --

Also I would like to know wether there will be some other apparel like rings, necklaces, et cetera, and also some more feminine options for dressing (how about skirts & stockings? And how about some dresses? And a range of neck lines to choose from?)

On Sisi my character had free portrait re-build when this update was applied few days ago - I hope it will be the same on Singularity. New "station barber shops" only allow to change clothing, make-up, haircut and tattoos/piercing - but face cannot be changed.

I realize that totoos and piercings are common amongst Minmatar, and it will be nice to have them back.
But EVE is a sandbox universe. Many of us fill roles that are not determined only by race. Some of us are traders, while others of us (like me) are scientists. I spend most of my days inventing T2 items and working to get the parts shipped to me.
Would it kill anyone to get a lab coat? I mean, walking around in leather pants and a sleeveless shirt is all cool, but I am not cool. I am a science geek, a Minmatar science geek, so the lab coat can fall apart often, if need be. But can I please get a lab coat to wear. And maybe a business suit for when I need more funding.

I agree. From an RP perspective there should exist "normal stuff / services", which are quite cheap, up to "expensive ones". Hey! EVE online is as capitalistic as can be! And as many of the inhabitants here are trading, this seems to be logical. Perhaps the production of some these items is also a nice extension of PI. IMHO EVE online is not only one of the best teamplaying platforms, but also one of the best simulations of economy. BTW: Where and how this would be licensed then? Like BPOs? Lottery? Maybe I would like to reopen the cantine of my corp (from time to time) :-)

Read the patch notes again:
Quote:
Character Creation
- Code optimization has increased overall performance in the character creator.
- Characters now have the option to add vicious hero scars and burns.
- A collection of piercings, studs and facial modifications have been added.
- Represent your bloodline in ink with new and classic tattoo designs from the EVE universe.
- Added a new pair of sunglasses.
- Added male and female tank tops.
- There is now a free station service to allow you to re-customize your appearance from any station.

I am also wanting to see the ability to turn portraits off completely. Lag since the "new character creator" went live has gotten totally out of hand, to the point it is sometimes taking me a full MINUTE to gate into a system WITH A FAIRLY LOW CHARACTER COUNT. I can sit there and WATCH the "portraits" loading into local one at a time, the overload is so bad, in most systems.
IMO the "new character creator" is one of the most worthless things CCP has ever wasted MY time and bandwidth on - I'd PREFER to not even have a portrait than waste my time with that INSANELY SLOW new character creator.
No, it's NOT my system - it's the fact that 10+ Megabit Internet flat out DOES NOT EXIST where I live (like in MOST of the world), yet that seems to be what Eve is expecting nowadays to run even so-so tolerably.
