From noob to leader of a major empire alliance... can it still be done in EVE? Or are the real opportunities for getting to the top of the food chain all taken and the barriers of entry to this elite club now too high for anyone else to achieve?
What are the realistic prospects for an aspirational noob joining the game now?

Survival of the bottest?
Um yeah, putting that aside for a moment... Yes if you put enough time and effort into it then its still possible to get to the top. Thats what the allure of EvE is all about really, the possibilities.
Running a large alliance isn't an aspiration to be taken lightly though, its allot of work, probably best suited to someone with allot of time on their hands. If you do it from scratch, starting with a corp, then founding an alliance and then growing it.. Well then I imagine it could take anything up to a couple of years. If you go the traditional route and you want your alliance to be a major player in 0.0, that's a whole extra pile of effort.
Rising up to lead one of the already well established alliances I'm not so sure on. With EvE's history of alliances failscading from the inside out, you'll really need to work hard on gaining peoples trust and developing a track record of your own before you even stand a chance.

Of course its possible.
But the commitments you must give to your corp will be demanding. Expect EvE to be your 2nd life if you wanna make it that far... ----------------------------

Does anyone even pay attention to empire-space (hi-sec) alliances? Name one "major" one, cause I have no clue.

You donŠt want to be ally leader of a powerblock, as you would have to quit your RL job, your wife/gf would leave, and your home would be a mess. After running candidate for CSM (you would have to) you would have to go to island for serveral times a year (payed by ccp) realizing that they donŠt listend to you.
Good luck with this endeavour.

Yes, it can. I went from being a noob to leader of Majesta Empire (currently over 3000 members) in about a year and a half, leading the alliance in some of its most successful campaigns along the way.
It does require significant political skill and is not for the faint of heart or the small of balls. -- Killed me? Read about it in my blog! Northern Lights: Solo PVP in EVE Online

-rep, untrue (I ran ME's MAX2 campaign while gearing up for my wedding and working more than full time as a software engineer)

To the OP...
It's absolutely possible, and one of the thrills of this game. As people have said before, it will require a great deal of your RL time. Not to mention you will need to have the appropriate set of man management skills and diplomacy necessary to make a real success of it.
A few friends and I did this from scratch four years ago. Kept it going for two years, but burn out, and RL pressures led to easy choices (family, job, new baby, etc etc).
My counsel to you would be its as much about who you know as what you know. Build good relationships with other corps and alliances from day one. People have long memories in this game (take it from someone who has been playing since beta (posting with an alt)). Your actions today will have an impact tomorrow whether you like it or not.
If you choose to do this... best of luck in your endeavour, and I wish you every success.

Pretty sure, like in any community, if you put in the hours, earn peoples trust, do the work and know how to work politics, have leadership qualities, you can get to the top or at least in the upper echilons of 0.0 power and certainly lead an alliance.
Its probably a little easier if you're a smart, self confident and charismatic natural leader. It just not going to happen if you're insecure introvert. And it won't happen overnight.

Keep your little alliance going long enough and eventually the bigger ones will implode under the weight of their own important and seriousness :)

I will be shocked if Mynxee still has a seat on the CSM after this election. This is the year of nullsec leaders going "hey, they want to do WHAT with jump bridges?!" and dogpiling their 5000-member blocs on the vote.
I'll be voting for The Mittani. -- Killed me? Read about it in my blog! Northern Lights: Solo PVP in EVE Online

Don't immediately aim right for the top of the nullsec coalitions. First form a corp and gain experience in running that and form a core of trusted players. Then find an up and coming nullsec alliance and join them. Gain trust and make sure your corp is active. You will probably find seniority in less than six months if you work hard. Expand your corp. Become an FC.
From there you will gain access to the restricted information. Become accepted in the core of leadership. Then you only have to wait for your minor alliance to become a major one. This is down to you to ensure so pick well. You will have naysayers and trolls and setbacks. Stick to your guns.

The Coalition of Common Sense.
It's pretty small, actually - not many people seem to think it matters much these days. --Vel
