So the title says it I have about 4 million sp ans I am curretly training assault shps 5 for frigs and was wondering what is the best solo ratter/mission ship. I enjoy the speed of frigs. I am mostly gallente trained. I have about 1 mil in drone skills and I can fly a drake fairly effectively but I want to use an assault ship for some ratting/ missions and probably some pvp fighting?

Well, with AF you will be limited to do L2, maybe some L3 missions only. For missions i would stick with the Drake. I would say AF V is waste of SP.

So they don't really make fun pvp ships either??
I just recently came back to eve. I want to do some small fleet type pvp stuff. Maybe some piracy.

way too many contradictory points in this. Pic 1 maybe 2 types of ship and train to fly it well, if you hav a mil in drones your another mil or so in spacship command + however much in missiles, hybrids... your support skills are going to be almost non existant, get them up otherwise having assault ship 5 isnt going to do you much good... also you wont be able to fly a particually effective drake.

i agree with the above poster. You have far too few skillpoints to be wasting them on assault ships V. They are also a poor choice or impossible for level 3 missions. Gallente AF's are very good though. If you have a mil sp in drones and want to continue training AF V, I would suggest flying an ishkur with 1 flight of damage drones and 1 flight of ec-300's, and going out to rat or do anomalies in a quiet lowsec or 0.0 system. If you want to do missions, stick with the drake.
For pvp, assault ships are fine. Enyo is cheap and and very good dps for flying with a small gang, ishkur is more expensive but capable of solo work.
if you want to mission, stick to the drake. EC-P8R... You will never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy. |

Assault ships are perfectly viable in mission if you know what you're doing.
The BS heavy lvl 4's are the only ones you can't really do in AF's the rest aren't that hard.
Then again I've maxed my skills to fly my Jaguar. Even a Rifter works fine in most lvl 3's
It's all in the skills pal, and the fact that lvl 1-3 missions have rarely if ever more than 1-2 BS and mostly just cruisers/frigs.

Ishkur, it's one of the best out there and you already have some skills for it. Enyo is "ok", but will get a bad beating from other assault frigs. If you want something like Enyo, then go the wolf/jaguar road. If you want something like Ishkur...well there isn't any others like it. It's a good ship and basically the only one of it's kind.
I fly one, so I'm biased :)
One thing you do have to keep in mind is that ishkur needs skills. A lof of them. So for a low sp...not ideal. Of course one could think that if you want to have a low sp assault ship you should have started with minmatar in the first place to fly a "good" low sp assault ship. The option is: Train all new skills for wolf/jag or add to your current skillset to fly a nice ishkur. Which one takes more time?
In the long run I would say...go for wolf/jag mostly due to projectiles. Don't get me wrong. Ishkur is a GREAT ship, but you need a lot of skill to make it good. Before you get there...it's going to suck. I HAD good droneskills, I HAD good small hybrid skills, I HAD good support skills...all this BEFORE I trained assault ships to V and started flying an ishkur. Now I'm training for projectiles (going for a mael) and I now have to train small/med/large projectiles to V just to get T2 large cannons... Choices...

Edited by: Maz3r Rakum on 22/02/2011 17:12:54 Wolf and Ishkur will approach levels of drake dps lol. depending on the either both could be relatively effective for low-sec (maybe 0.0 don't know) ratting and anomalies. Neither would be particularly effective in lvl 3 or 4s but could probably do most of them if you want to take a REALLY long time. Basically if you want to roam low sec, you could just pvp fit your AF and rat. Though tbh, you might be better off aiming to get into a PVE BS, to get yourself a good reliable isk maker. AFs will pale in comparison. I personally got into a sentry dominx with around your level of SP, and made plenty of isk with that.

If you want to train AS5, by all means do it. It is your choice and it sounds like you have committed to it. AS's are good for PvP, lowsec ratting, and nullsec if you can get an area that is secured. Plus wolfpack style AS gangs are very fun IMO.
My personal recommendation would be to train Galle AND Minnie. The Ishkur, Jag, and Wolf are all good ships, plus you get the Rifter and with the cross training of the two races you get the Dramiel which is just a damn good ship for lots of reasons.
On my PvP char I have all racial frigs to 5 and just love them all, they are some of my favorite ships to fly. It could just be that the purpose of your life is to server as a warning to others. |

A slight off-topic
You don't need t2 in your Mael Dr, prototype & scout are almost as good as t2 and don't require as much grid as t2. Train to V only if you desperately NEED tremor or quake and even then faction ammo are good enough in 90% of cases.
The alpha of large arties is big enough with meta to blow most cruisers with one volley anyway.

AS 5 is not wasted SP at all, however at 4 million there are far more things you could invest that two weeks training on.
speaking from experience of minmatar assault ships.
Level 3s are pretty straightforward with no tanking issues, especially the jaguar, but you will always be light on damage compared to a battlecruiser.
Both work well for low sec ratting and have no problem taking down the battleship ship rats you encounter.
PVP can be fun in them if you are soloing or doing very small gang work. In larger fleets most FCs would rather an interceptor than an assault frigate.

Well hmmm. I am still on the fence right now on drones as large source of damage really.
So small fleet pvp what better options do I have?
I am more than willing to crosstrain to better setups.
I can run missions till I get the skills up to snuff for something better. I was wrong about my skill allocation. I have almost 700k in drones and about 1 mil in ships. About 6K in engineering and mechanic each.. I can fit tech 2 mods on frigates most slots. Most of my ship skills are in frigs cruisers and BC's. So I want a poll on most fun ships cruiser and below for small fleet pvp. I can figure out what I need to train up to get it flying nice.
I have mostly focused on frigs and hybrids and drones so far. However I really seem to want to get into amarr battleships and battlecruisers once I really get to that level.
Having gallente mostly skills is what I get for having a corp CEO who loves gallente. And when I started this char he is who I got a lot of my info from.
I won't be starting a new character but I want to cross train for a good pvp race that isn't so drone dependant. I do like drones for mining though lol

. I have trained some projctiles for using on the myrm I was flying for a while. So u say that since I am heavy gallente crossing into minmatar would be a good option for me? I know the rifter is a loved ship. But after the rifter what's the good bc bs and cruisers for them??

Making up my mind is what I wanna do. That's why I was asking for advice. With the skills I have already what is a good race to focus on other than gallente. I really don't like drones so much and kinda wish I could have the 700k sp back to put into something else. Since I have mostly gallente skills and hybrids. would changing to focus on minmatar be a good option??
I really like the looks of amarr but I have very little training into them at all. If not other than frigs 3 I have none in amarr really. Only reason I got it to that was to use their destroyer for salvaging.

Edited by: Batelle on 22/02/2011 18:59:45 where your skills are now, I'd put more points in gunnery/drones/mechanic/engineering/navigation before training a second racial frig to 5. You don't want to end up flying many ships and all poorly. Ishkur is one of the best things ever, and the enyo is very cheap and does great dps in group pvp.
drones 5 scout drone op 5 drone interfacing 4 gallente/minmatar specialization 3 navigation 3 combat drone op 4 navigation/durability/sharpshooting 2-3
mechanic 5 hull upgrades 4 (important to get this to 5) repair systems 4 compensation skills 3
engineering 5 energy system operation 4 (quick train to 5) energy management 4 (important to get 5 for pvp to unlock thermodynamics)
gunnery 5 small hybrid 5 small blaster spec 3-4 rapid firing 4 controlled bursts 3 motion prediction 4 sharpshooter 4 weapon upgrades 5 advanced weapon upgrades 3 surgical strike 4 trajectory analysis 3
electronics 5 targeting 3 signal analysis 3 longrange targeting 3 propulsion jamming 4
navigation 5 afterburner 4 acceleration control 4 high speed maneuvering 4 evasive maneuvering 4 fuel conservation 4
science 5 thermodynamics 3-4
Get all of these skills before training up another racial frigate to lvl 5 imo.
Catalyst is a better salvager. As for drones, set up some hotkeys and you'll love them. EC-P8R... You will never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy. |

Just little correction:
You no longer need Energy Management and Science at 5 for Thermodynamics, the requirement was lowered to 3 and 4. Only level 5 skill you need is Engineering.

On the other hand specialising in just one race, never mind two, takes a lot of SPs I have roughly 40mil now and I still can't fly all of the sub-capital combat ships Gallente have in the game. Though by skipping certain T2 ship types such as commandships or logis you can easily crosstrain with less SP's.

So skill up your drake then.
You say that you want to fly Drake for PVE and then n number of ships for PVP or just anything else. I am not sure what advice you expect...
Any advice that can be given to you is pointing out good ships within certain race or class to make progression more effective - something not applicable as you want to fly different ships of different races.
If you want to fly Drake, focus your skilling on Caldari and missiles. Except of Caracal and Kestrel, all Caldari boats are very decent with Drake being without questions the best BC you can find, same can be said for Navy Hookbill within frig class. |

Yes, because with the crosstraining you get:
Machariel Dramiel
You get others too, but those two are worth it alone :)

But I'm not going for arties. I'm going for 800mm's AC's with falloff, and I like going all ze way once I get going on path. For me the extra 5% is already reason enough... Also if I'm going for a Machariel...then it would be rather sad to fly it without T2 guns...

Assault ships are quite fun, as are their heavy variants.
But as with all ships above T1 you WILL NEED high supporting skills to get most out of them (or to not fly them crippled in some cases).
I'd say go for cap stability first, then your prefered tank (ship used dictates that); once you have the survivability you'll want to have some gank - without damage you won't be doing much...without tank you won't be doing much either! But IMO tank (and in this regard: cap stability) come first. Been there - done that: undertanked Domi for L4...had to warp out of easy missions. Trained tank and I was able to brick-wall most of them. Upped DPS (drones in this case) and I was able to do that faster.

This is where a problem lies dood. If you put more time and SPs into spaceship command, it's less SPs for things like engineering skills (cap capacity, cap recharge, shield amount, shield regen, resists etc etc), or mechanic (rigging (very good to get to L4 btw), PG output etc), or navigation (top speed, agility, MWD T2 use, AB T2 use etc), or electronics (targeting range, max locked targets, sig radius reduction, scan res increase etc).
Try to get most of these to L4 before cross training. Also keep in mind if you want to move away from Caldari/Gallente/Whatever, you have a whole list of gunnery/missile skills to train up, and that can take a long time.
Everyone loves fast frigs and assault ships in particular (i love my jag), but you will be a lot happier flying it with good support skills than just barely scraping in.

The thing is. There is no "good" assault ship for low sp. All of them are rather long term ships. Fly normal frigates until you get enough skills for assault ones. Also remember that you will need isk because loosing T2 ships will make a dent in your wallet.

Ok so I changed from assault shps 5 to finish out training small hybrid turret 5 I have 2 days left on it.
I have a lot of the main engi skills to 4 already as well as the mechanic skills As I said a lot of the frigate class stuff I can use tech 2 of. Working on getting hybrids there now as well. I can also use tech 2 drones small and meds not ogre size yet.
I understand what u guys are saying about supporting skills and I appreciate the input.
To the poster that listed all those skill. I have a large majority of those all to the suggested level. I didn't just train random things.. The only things I trained randomly away from gallente frig and cruiser use was to use the drake with my corp in wh space. And to use med AC' on the myrm due to projectiles being better than hybrids.
