Edited by: Ts''ao Ts''ao on 02/12/2010 12:22:02 just a heads up, due to health a safety reasons, it is now illegal to drive with snow on your roof..
Police will stop you and you will get 3 points and a ú60 fine
The reason is because several accidents have been caused by snow sliding from the roof and covering the windscreen, and also falling snow from the back of the car is a hazard for other road users..
You have been warned,
Ruling came into effect from midnight lastnight

My lazy arse would be so in trouble right now. We got dumped on yesterday and my roof has like 6" on it right now. I just simply removed enough on each side so it wouldn't go in the vehicle.

over the last week I have had an inch of ice on my roof that I cannot shift so I hope they can take that into account.

That sounds way silly, you've made first contact with snow just now?
Snow falling from the sky or other cars is a non issue, as for the screen getting covered, wipers anyone?

Its a little worse when people drive around with 3ft of snow on their roof and it all slides off at the same time.

Not really illegal as such, it's covered under things like "driving without due care and attention", or "visibility dangerously obscured" or such, which have always been stoppable and fineable things.
They'll just be doing things about it because as the weather continues, then more people can't just say "not today", they have to go out, so traffic is higher, and it is a trivial thing to do, to brush the loose piled snow off the roof.

Next they'll be making rules against tailgating people on icy roads.
Some things should be obvious.

Nah, the snow isn't brown enough, wear a puffy jacket or have facial hair. Also, it isn't taking photos in public. Think I've covered all the things that can get you arrested as a terrorist...

I've had people driving down a duel carriageway with tons of snow on the roof of their car it is absolutly annoying to see if fall off in large blocks as they drive along at 60-70 mph. I feel sorry for bikers who end up behind these people.

That's still quite dangerous, with heat and vibrations it could still detach.
I would still fine you if I were a police man, hehe.

Belive me it wont move. I tried de-icer, hot water (made it worse) and I dont want to scratch my roof with a spade or whack it with a hammer. I also tried some screen wash but all that did was turn it blue
I am not manly enough to get the damn stuff off and the heat from the car only gets the front clear. All the windows are clear as are the lights and my number plate. I get very angry with people who dont even bother the clear the back window or their lights.
Im hoping it will get warm tomorrow so I can chip it off.

if the snow falls forward onto your windshield you weren't driving fast enough!
and if there is enough snow that it goes backward and is a hazard to other drivers well.... I'm just surprised you weren't all driving snowmobiles to work

Scotland here. A few cars have been completely berried in an igloo of snow, with a good 2-3 feet of snow ontop of them.
My garden table has doubled in height thanks to the snow that's fallen on it. _____________________________________ Haruhiist since December 2008

Bikers who take there bikes out onto icy roads @ 60-70 mph are Darwin Awards waiting to happen. I have little sympathy for them.

There's nothing that will get your blood pumping quite as fast as being behind an 18 wheeler on the Interstate doing 60, and having an 8 foot wide, 20 foot long 2 inch thick slab of ice come airborne off the top of the trailer in front of you.
Happens more often than you would like to think................

Knowing how the police can be here if you where seen driving one they would probably prosecute you for driving an uncertified vehicle and for having no tax, MOT and insurance and then take it away to be crushed the same way as they do with Go-Peds.

What is it with you southerners and snow ?
It should be common sense to get rid off that snow on your roof as it also counts as extra weight for the vehicle increasing fuel consumption, not to mention starting a car at below -4C which I bet not many of you bother to care about.
WHY WON'T ANYONE OF YOU THINK OF THE OZONE LAYER!!!!!!!

There are people who would wipe off some of the snow from the windshield on the driver's side, so they have a hole to look out, and then they simply drive into the traffic. I love them.

While unfortunately I cannot provide a source as I heard it direct from a police officer, and due to my line of work I am in regular contact with the police..
However I can state more specificly which law it violates / comes under, it can and most usually is classed as an unsecured load, which carries the 3 points and fine I mentioned.
They are not policing it too heavily at the moment, so if you only have an inch or less I would not worry to much, its more for the extreme cases where people havent bothered to remove any snow and have several inches on the roof..
Another section it comes under is unsuring your car is suitable and safe to drive, so you must ensure windows are clear, light are cleared, and the bonnet mustnt have some stupid pile on it which reduces visability..

requiring people to clean off the roof of their car has been a safety rule/law here in the Northeastern states of the US for years. the Snow is not so much an issue as is when it becomes partial ice sections and becomes a projectile on the freeway. those hardened sections of snow have been known to damage cars when hit at travel speeds.

I'm a biker. I drive cars too, but can't afford to replace the one that died earlier in the year, so I'm stuck with just the bike even in this crappy weather.
I did write quite a missive, all about contact patches and grit, modern rubber compunds and tyre technology as it applies to motorcycles, the approporiate use of speed (you know... like not doing 70mph along icy b-roads and expecting to be able to turn when you reach a bend), visibility and one of the main dangers in being a biker coming from other road users' lack of awareness (SMIDSY)... but then realised I'd be fighting a losing battle against the forces of smug superiority and lack of concern for your fellow man, so I've shortened it to this...
...what an arsewipe.
Get well soon.
edit:- Oh, and it's "their" you illiterate simpleton.
