Its so entirely simple I don't know HOW in all this time CCP has not figured any of this out.
Right now there is the totally ambiguous mode of moving that involves double clicking some random spot on the screen and your ship follows that direction. This is ridiculous and makes complex movements almost impossible (right now all we have is approach, keep distance, and orbit), but there is a simple fix that wont even need any balancing!
Ok, going to explain this the best that I can. Please bear with me.
Take games like Homeworld (please watch some youtube vids so you know what im talking about if you havent played) Their method of movement is you click once and move your mouse and a circle spreads out from your ship with a size relative to the distance the cursor is from your ship, this would be for PLANAR movement. To make your ship move vertically, you could hold down a key like shift for example and that would lock the cursor on that range and then give you an option to drag the mouse up/down to set a height. BOOM! Simple! You would now be able to set destination to an EXACT SPOT in space! Its already half-implemented with the tactical overview so why not take it a step further? We would finally be able to maneuver our ships to EXACT points in space instead of "eyeballing it" and you could even take it a step further than that and add in the possibility of waypoints to plot complex flight paths but lets not get ahead of ourselves here, baby steps.
Does anyone else believe that this would add to the tactical combat of EVE? I think this would be a perfect, simple addition to the game that would benefit everyone. Thoughts anyone?

Given the title I was warming up the flame thrower expecting someone to be asking for direct manual control. instead I find a practical idea I don't remember seeing suggest before, I am most disapointed as I will have to find a troll somewhere else.
Looking at your idea, I am not sure it would be practical for combat due to the extra time taken to set a course and constant movement of the enermy ships, there is always something to be said for quick estimates in time critical activities. I suspect the only to to know for sure is for CCP to see if its possible and get it on the test server, I could be wrong.
Would work perfectly for things like mining/rating were you currently bounce of the rocks when you get to far into the belt or any were else close to objects like POS. Would also make positioning ships in range for things like remote reps etc a lot easier without bumping ships.
because the course is only sent to the server once you have set the direction, it will not generate any extra lag like manual controls, in fact it might reduce lag as people have to modify there course to refine it as they go. So a possible Lag reduction advantage as well. Macrointel, the place were the nature order of the universe does not hold sway. Pirates and ore thief's are congratulated by carebears for the actions. |

Sorry I couldn't appease your hunger for roast troll
But as to it not being practical for combat, using a control system like this is pretty easy to use fast to make quick split second decisions. Thinking about it more it might make a little more lag if people are constantly spamming new positions, but that doesn't seem any different than someone spamming clicks on some random spot on the screen. *shrug*
It just seems so simple, unless this is somehow impossible to implement at least let us try it on the test server!

I'd say that the major problem with this idea is that homeworld is based on a more or less static battlefield where you have a position you want to go to and ships that take own initiatives once they get there. In eve you usually don't have a static target (mining aside), but a moving one (ships), and your ship won't move an inch unless you tell it to.
I think adding a controlling method which is built around static positioning to a system which is built around dynamic movement is only going to add a second layer of complication.
Just think of it: While this might work acceptably in large slow ships such as battleships, imaging trying to fly an interceptor in 10000 m/s, having to change your heading every second. The second your interceptor reaches its destination because you didn't have time to update its heading it'll slow to a stand still and be destroyed.

I think the idea has potential. Why not simply add it to the existing double-click movement style? Gives inty/AF/Dramiel pilots the ability to double click in a direction, while enabling battleships to utilize the proposed system, being a single-click and hold method. Best of both worlds as far as I'm concerned.

To be honest the only way I see this is being able to warp to anywhere in the 3D solar system map view, the one you use for scan probes, because it's very similar to the Homeworld 2 solar system view, which you used for ship navigation.

Okay, I know this would be only useful to make safe spots and that we can already make safespots through various tricks/tactics. But think about this, why not just give us an intuitive ability to be able to warp to any place in the solar system and just bookmark it, make it a feature, give probes more of a use in being able to locate possible safe spots that could be anywhere in the system's boundaries (That are soon coming it seems).
If you're going to give space walls, at least give use the freedom of the whole room.

I got stuck on a really big rock in a mission, and couldn't move from that space. I had to keep dlb clicking in empty space to get free.
It would be nice if I could jump into manual get away from the rock and set my course.

Doesn't seem like a game-breaking mechanics change, but it would definately reshape combat in many aspects. I loved this part of homeworld...pain in the arse as it was at times.
+1
*edit* you could do waypoints for that, as well, in Homeworld. \o |

Edited by: Ugly Bank on 16/04/2010 06:51:41 Edited by: Ugly Bank on 16/04/2010 06:50:14 I have my doubleclick assigned in to my fifth mousebutton, and when I keep the button in bottom, it will "doubleclick" every 1.2 seconds, whitch gives me pretty direct control and still produces less lag than spamming the mousebutton to make a doubleclick as often as possible. It also makes easier to control the ship, beacause the ship actually has time to react to one of the "doubleclickings"
Ugly
Edit: The OPs idea is otherwise pretty great, but as a frigate and cruiser sized veessel PvP pilot, I can not see that working in PvP, beacause the crazy piloting needed is far too slow to produce by OPs idea. Especially minmatar vessels often need pretty epic piloting :p

Humm not what I expected to find here hehe :)
However I do think features that are common to homeworld (What a great game) could work well in this. If it would be possible to get a few more movement features such as this I think it would be a fine addition to what we have.
As much as it would be awesome to 1st person manual fly an inty around at breakneck speeds, I dont think the server is built that way to handle it as well as that isnt really what eve is about.

why not go further and incorperate WADS for directional control for the people that desire it. We already have hotkeys for increasing and decreasing speed.
Atleast make the option...
this is the greatest pet peve of alot of my buddies whom don't like the navigation system

I'm shocked at the replies I'm so glad everyone mostly likes my idea!
For one thing I know for a fact eve cannot and will never work with WASD flight, the system is just not built for controls like that. That is why this idea was proposed in the first place, its basically the only balanced viable alternative I can think of to WASD flight. And as to the post about controlling interceptors, those ships are so fast anyway there isn't a system you can make to control those things better
Personally I think the greatest thing about this is it just has to be implemented, its not meant to be a replacement! People who want to use the old system can, or people can use this system instead. Its just to me the controls dont handle well across all ship sizes, so this would allow us controls for bigger ships while still allowing the system in place to do its job.

honestly I just don't see the point. 95% of space anywhere is completely unoccupied. Moving places just doesn't have any value beyond getting to optimal because A) there is nothing to go to/avoid and B) there is no point in going to anything (Most of the time you end up getting caught on the object and you're ****ed)
If we could say, maneuver behind an asteroid for cover, I would like to see this implemented. otherwise, I would just like to see more game balancing less new stuff.

Edited by: Torothanax on 18/04/2010 07:06:14 Homeworld style movement would probably work better for warping on the system map. I wouldn't be opposed to it working on the main screen, but I think it would be harder to do.
The in game controls right now do a decent job for most stuff. I wouldn't mind "orbit CW/CCW" buttons. Maybe a "reverse orbit direction" toggle as well. I hate getting stuck on objects because the ship picks a stupid orbit path. And why does your ship often change directions when you change orbit distance or turn off a speed boosting module?
Maybe make object collision boxes match shown graphic size.

+ 1 here as well, this mode should be tied into tactical overlay imo.
and yes direct warping to any place in a solar system, like positioning drones is a must.

I realize here I'm not trying to move mountains or anything and I know this isn't going to be some Ear-*ahem* Eve-shattering suggestion but the thing is it may not have much impact now like someone said before, but it COULD bring up new possibilities that wouldn't be possible without this as a base. Remember ccp's idea for screen-wide asteroid fields? Would certainly help I think.
At least using it to warp around the star map would be win. That would be a nice start
