I mean to say that PvP in this game essentially consists of running to lowsec, and darting around in the hopes that you find someone and when you warp into that point at 0 KM you hope that they don't see you come in and warp away.
It just doesn't seem like pvp so much as it is wait 2 hours and MAYBE you'll find someone to blow up. Does anyone else share my frustration with this model? :/

I'm with ya.
Some people think its a psychological game where you have to bait/lure/hunt efficiently to get fights. Based on what I'm told it makes the fight better because of the build up. (I personally dont get this feeling, its more like boredom.) Or you could just spawncamp/blobgank people. That helps you get kills too.
Other people just want to go in and join the fight in progress, and have the fight last more than the few minutes it took after tackling the target. RvB and 0.0 sov battles tend to be like that.
It really depends on the type of PvP you want to do.

Not at all, I am in Faction Warfare and even during the slow times there are fights to be found everywhere if you know where to look. There are a lot of folks out in low sec looking for a fight, try belts, FW mission beacons and plexes. I guarantee if you sit at a belt in a high sec border system like OMS or TAMA you will get a fight.

... your problem is either being p*ss-poor with the directional scan, not having friends to fly with (you can have great fights with 3 guys vs 20 if you know how to handle it,) or only looking in one area of lowsec or something. Theres plenty of decent scraps around if you stop whining for a second and actually get to grips with finding them. |

Solo hunting in low- and null-sec has always made me feel like I'm playing mmo silent hunter. There it is all about the hunt, finding something to sink, slinking into position, aligning for the perfect torpedo run, and hiding/trying to get away from the cavalry. It is a lot more work for a lot less payoff (in terms of kills) but I love it. Nothing wrong with not enjoying that type of combat - I don't always feel like sitting at my computer for 3 hours looking for people to kill. There's plenty of other types of combat, you just have to find what you enjoy. Multiple pvp accounts really help keep you from getting in a rut, you can switch from solo to roaming gangs to blob fleets to pos shooting whenever you want.

Luck plays a role but skill plays a bigger role. Jumping around blindly looking for a fight is a craps shoot, but only because you made it so. If you actually look for targets with your directional scanner and probes, far less is left to chance. So basically, you suck at scouting. That's why it's a craps shoot. -----------------------------------------------------

In low-sec, the hunt is what it's about for me.
As others have stated: try a different type of PvP if you can't enjoy the ride and just want to get there already.

solo PVP is very very difficult to learn but possible. it needs mastery of many many areas of EVE knowledge. for example, deep map knowledge, knowledge of movements of people in regions. deep fitting knowledge to fit ships viable for solo combat. deep knowledge of combat mechanics, aggression mechanics, how gates and bubbles work, manual flying. good PVE economics to afford ship loss. high skill points in the ship you fly. lots of analytical and problem-solving skills to overcome each problem you encounter. so it is very very tough in terms of effort and cost to get proficient at solo PVP.
you will never learn all this unless you step away from blob/gang PVP. it can take months, great patience and much ISK loss before you finally figure out how to do it effectively. on the other hand, nothing else is as rewarding and enjoyable!

Don't fly into the 80% of Lowsec that is dead. If you really want PVP go to either Tama, Rancer, Amamake or Old Man Star.

Right, here's how you get started:
1) Go to battleclinic or just some killboard of a competent pvp corp that use frigates. Find a fit for Rifter/incursus/punisher/merlin (choose one depending on your skills/preference) and fit one like that.
2) Head to a pvp hotspot, like Old Man Star, BWF, N-RAEL, Amamake, Tama ect. Once there use you directional scanner to look for appropriate targets (hint: other frigates).
3) Engage anything that comes into range or just wait for some frigate to go for ya.
There's a lot more to it than that, and you will probably lose a ton of ships like this, but you can get fights like this. For instance, learning to use the directional scanner properly is a pretty big step, as it can help you find targets quickly. With frigates, you should also warp to an odd distance to celestials, and consider aligning to something by default (to avoid getting caught by bigger stuff).

Edited by: Darthewok on 23/02/2010 10:24:57 ^^ pretty much.
just like to add - don't bank all your hopes on a single hotspot as today's hotspot may be boring tommorrow eg. inactive timezone or some blobby alliance moved in etc.
instead have multiple hotspots in different regions prepared so you can move on to the next if the current one is too boring.
have a list of 10-20 hotspots in 5-10 regions and you will never lack for a fight.
EDIT: yes finding a good fight is like a crap shoot. so throw more craps(dice) each time by visiting multiple places and you will get a result.

if you want a much easier and safer time of finding fights I'd say get something cov-ops. Even if you're just a scout for a small gang, you can learn a lot about Dscan in relative safety with a anathema or something. You're les likely to spook a potential target if they cant scan you and have more time to find them and get proficient with quickly finding someone. you're gonna have a hard time finding a fight if someone sees your combat ship on scan for ages, obviously looking for them.

I agree, for a solo person that dont have a lot of experience with directional scanner and dont know the universe well pvp is not that good, you spent an hour looking for a fight just to get ganked.
nullsec and lowsec are similar on that it seems to me.
If you want to pvp for the fun of pvp there are nothing better than Red versus Blue, two corps in mutual endless war just for the fun of blowing things (join "R-V-B" channel). Faction Warfare is fun also.
CCP must work on pvp urgently, dont know what must be done, but Im not paid to think, they are, so yes I dont have suggestions but that is not my job. Anyway EVE pvp is not bad, just to bloby or to boring 80% of the times.

Only thing CCP should change in how PvP works right now is fixing some of the suboptimal choices to be good enough to use (rockets, some AF's, black ops...).
The rest works perfect.
If thousands of players can PvP on their own, without anyone holding their hand, then i guess the problem is in the people who do not know how to do it (go learn) and not in the system.
This game should not turn into a railroading system, just to make it easier on newbs. EvE's strongest selling point is the insanely difficult learning curve, because it makes becoming good all the better.

cherry spitting. cause chess is solved and to become good at chess you just have to memorize as many positions as possible.

Riiight, that's why chess has been around for ages as one of the most popular games in history, and chess is not solved, it's ever evolving. Maybe you just suck at it :) Anyway agreed on the point that it does require a considerable amount of knowledge and experience, not to say that I'm an expert at all I PvP, I've only had enough experience to confirm what's been said. The learning curve in Eve is great, but again it makes it all the better when you become proficient in an aspect of it. I'm learning new things all the time, there's significant growing pains in all the areas of eve; but keep at it it'll pay off.

yeah, it won't take long to find a fight in an active lowsec system. although you'll have a different problem -- you'll be able to find fights, just not fun fights, since it often ends up being a fleet vs. you.

I'm pretty decent at solo PvP. Even then it often takes me a long long time to get any kind of exciting fight. Even 0.0 in an active warzone like Providence is very much hit and miss. Lots of large gangs, bubbles and cap support. 0.0 is not the enviroment to find a good solo fight in any amount of decent time. And incidentally, last time I was in Curse, it was very dead. Even went so far as flying through it on AP.
In order of ease:
1. Getting ganked 2. Ganking someone else 3. Find a challenging fight ____
