Two years passed and you got close to proper update handling (Proper - means "able to lift up installation from any state to currently actual one without telling pilot to download whole new archive") Please, do next two steps - incremental update to .stuff files and actual UPDATE of game client instead of just repair (determining required version from update server address in client ini file).
You've made an assumption that this is the end of the line. That assumption is incorrect; there's still work being done in exactly this direction. However, what we have is a good first iteration which we can release to the public that gives rapid and useful benefits to users.
I didn't. I just expressed my joy and asked to go further in this direction. -- Thanks CCP for cu |

Excellent tool for rapid repair - Files repaired : 266
There is however no log file logged for the repair work done (none that I could locate anyway). I'd suggest putting the log file in the same directory for posterity or any post repair troubleshooting, even more so if the tool barfed in the middle of repair and didn't complete repairs.

The next internal itteration already includes a log but just as a part of the ui, writing the log into file on request might be a good idea.

Edited by: Riggs Galactix on 02/11/2009 16:37:25 Yeah. Excellent work. Tried it and repaired (redownloaded) 36 files.
Nothing more to add from my side. This is something that should have been in Eve since release
edit: after repairing i had 2 dll in my bin folder which should not belong in there.. --> Eve didnt want to start. The Client told me to reboot and to try again but it didnt work so i deleted them with success.

Yes there seems to be an issue on our side (somebody else also ran into this already) we are going to look into it as soon as possible.

To follow up on Sputnik's earlier reply; this isn't an issue per se. What happened in this case was that we renamed teh wbrowser.exe/.dll to ccpbrowser.exe/.dll. As such when the repair tool is run, it can't find the new ccpbrowser files, and so simply downloads them.
It only causes an issue in the bin\ folder, since EVE protects it contents. Any extra files found there will stop the client from starting.
This event is handled by the client however, which gives you the error message informing you that you have extra files.
I'm sure there is some message that we could clarify for this instance, but it will only be an issue in the cases where a file is removed/renamed in the bin folder.

Apparently also a lot of files missing here, it has been running for a while, I downloaded the full SiSi install, and then I had no music and all station/ships/et al had no textures, just black color and that's all.
Hope this thing fix that, thanks!

mkay, ran it just to see what it threw up, its redownloading all the music even though i know these work as their part of the ambient track playlist i have playing most of the time when i'm playing eve. they're defiantely being played from this directory as they dont exist in my tq client. not to mention the right click > show in explorer button opens up my EVE - SiSi > res > audio > jukebox folder.
however. Thank you SO much for this, definately a huge step forward on client problem solving.

todays patch:
6.2.113614, EVE-EVE-STAGING, Protocol 229
Also noticing from the lack of anyone on the server. Everyone is having this problem I'm guessing. I suspect they are probably also deleting their client. recopying and repatching from tq. Which will take time assuming it will even work.
It was busted. I guess I fail also for not screenying the error but i just hit ok without thinking. Totally didnt work. Trying repair.exe now.
I think it was Ambient009.mp3 that was the problem. I vaguely recall that.

Could the patch installer be changed so it tries to patch other files if it encounters an error while processing a file?
file a patched ok file b error file c untouched file d untouched result: repair.exe downloads b, c and d
new: file a patched ok file b error file c patched ok file d patched ok result: repair.exe downloads only b

I tried patching from 111809 to 113614 on my PC and Laptop.
Both installations failed as it could not find an 'ambient.mp3' file! (I'm at work, I think that was the filename)
When I get back from work, I'll try running the repair.exe. Hopefully that'll fix the problem and save a complete download

got a question for everyone, The graphcis on my client look horrible after the last patch, the new planets either come in as one color or they are made up of large irregular squares, also it seems to crash when i try to change graphic settings....should i repair or should i try to do the full patch update? Anyone else not see the new planet graphics?

I had the exact same patching error.
I ran the repair.exe. 30-40 minutes later, bang! I could log right onto sisi!
This is a wonderful tool. Thanks Atropos and Sputnik

Exact same issue "ambient.mp3" and the repair had to download 862mb to fix it? Isn't that the bulk of the client?

There was an issue early in the development effort for Dominion where a large quantity of audio assets were added to the client. However, the patcher did not identify the files as having been modified, and so did not include them into the patch. Further down the development path, when we tweaked those same audio assets, the patcher had been fixed and so went ahead and tried to patch the file.
Unfortunately, if you were one of the people that had a client without the audio assets, they weren't present to be patched, causing the issue you're encountering here. At least, that's how it seems to me.
By running the repair tool, it will download all files that have been damaged, which could be several hundred megabytes of data. The raw install is 5+ GB of data unpackaged and ~2.5 GB in the installer, so really, anything less than that is a good deal

Yeah, ran into this audio issue myself. I watched it begin (and continue) downloading a hellofalotf audio files. The patcher started complaining a particular (and i presume the first) audio file was missing. Initially I started from scratch (fresh Tran copy) and patched progressively towads Sisi current, downloading a new patch for the last steps. I initially hoped to avoid the 630 meg Tran to Sisi patch because I'm on wet string for bandwith. When that failed i tried getting repair.exe to fix one of the builds closer to the LiveSisi.
I guessed the scinario you described because the repair seemed to be getting these audio files even when I tried to "fix" older Sisi builds.
In then end I bit the bullet and downloaded to 630 meg Tran to Sisi, realising there are often dead branches on sisi that get deployed.
Still an interesting test for the repair program. Is there any intention to try and compress the data it retrieves to help when large bulks of data get "broken" like that. Or is it part of Nullsoft's excellent installer package and not made internally? It might reduce load on your servers bandwidth if we end up using repair a lot :P
It must be noted, when the patcher failed it left the .ini in the build version it was trying to do, so executing repair.exe should take over screwed patchers and fix from where the patcher broke. Which is very good. But we now know it can take a LOT longer, due to the lack of compression for the repair.exe.

It will download any file that has a mismatch on the checksums. That could be one file, it could be ten. Of course, if you've suffered some disk corruption, and only one bit has changed in a 200 MB file, it will go ahead and download the entire file.
It's not meant as an alternative to the patching system, even though it can be (mis)used in that way
Additionally, each file it downloads is compressed using 7zip, and then uncompressed on your computer. I'm not sure, off hand, of the overall file transfer difference compared to the patcher, but as I said, it's not meant to be an alternative.

Trying to update my install with evepremiumpatch115219-115979_test.exe claims:
Quote: Client files don't match the files in the update. This indicated that your installation is corrupt. Please reinstall EVE Online.
However when i run repair.exe it finds no errors.
I watched the patch process the eve folder using filemon and, aside from looking for repair.exe in nearly every subdirectory, i don't see anything wrong.
Thoughts? Ideas?

*edit Seems it defaults to replace the Main EvE folder now rather than default asking where, if you are not careful you will overwrite the main client, this is a problem.
This is because it's a release candidate client, and so wants to use your main install.

What's the latest version? To my understanding 117460. Yet my client says it's an incompatible version. Any clues?

Ensure it's pointing at the correct server; these current patches are release candidates, and as such point to Tranquility. Be sure to have a shortcut to the eve.exe file with '/server:87.237.38.50' appended to it, like so: pic
