Hilmar said that the meaning behind '514' should be left to the community to figure out, and I think I've come to the answer. Since Dust 514 is in development in CCP Shanghai, there shouldn't be that great of a coincidence that the Chinese language could be used in this, and knowing the indie attitude of CCP, I can trust the developers in China to use "514" as a perplexing inside joke to outsiders until it was revealed on August this year.
There's plenty of significance in the symbolism of numbers when it comes to the Cantonese dialect of the Chinese language, and when combined in sequence, where:
5 = not, where '54' = 'not dying', and '58' = not prosperous 1 = must 4 = die
Literally, 'not must die', possibly again and again when they're infantry, and can be cloned again and again. Plus, with Hilmar mentioning that 'The Fleet does the flying, the infantry does the dying' bit from Starship Troopers, it might end up ringing quite true. Another way of pronouncing it, as Hilmar did as "Five-Fourteen", could also end up as "Definitely not die". ---

I heard an explanation that involved the number of races and bloodlines, 4 of the races get 3 bloodlines each, and there was speculation that a 5th race with 1 bloodlines would be somehow involved making it 14 bloolines in total, hence 514.
I'll see if I can dig up the sources of that, just need to remember where it was now. No idea how true it may be though. ------------------------------------------------ You either need a punch up the throat or a good shag.

Well if we go by that then its likely to assume that the Jove are included in that, seeing as they are both an empire and only one bloodline (if I remember my lore right). On an unrelated note, Kneel before Zod! |

Yeah, there's also the other speculation that it's 5 races, of Caldari, Gallente, Minmatar, Amarr and Jove, and the other 14 subfactions.
But given the context of "soldiers who can never truly die", I reckon the numerology might be more applicable. >_> ---

there are two jove characters ingame... cant remember what thier names are... but there are atleast 2 bloodlines...
i would think for ccp to name thier game after 514 it would have multiple reasons i would guess there are several meanings behind the name and 2 have been disclosed so far... keep up the good work

Ha, good one. I think you're slightly off, though. In Chinese (Mandarin), 514 sounds like 我要死, wo yao si or "I want to die". It's about the unluckiest number possible in China. When Chinese people get cell phones, they can pay extra not to have the number 4 ("death") in their number. 14 ("want death") and 514 are considered even less lucky.
I should have figured this out right away, and I didn't. Kudos to Davlos for realizing that it was an inside Chinese joke. I think my translation of the joke is a little closer to it, though.

It's all about the immortal clones and the Xtian Amarr bible (KJV):
Dust, as in Genesis 2:7 And the lord god formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.
and 514 as in Ephesians 5:14 Wherefore he saith, Awake thou that sleepest, and arise from the dead

Edit: Bear in mind we recently had the Apocrypha expansion, "the Apocrypha" being the name of a set of books included in some versions of the bible, and not others. Clearly someone in CCP has a strong Xtian naming inclination.
I'm more inclined to believe it has something to do with game lore than an inside Chinese joke. So I'm going to have to go with this guy on it though the Chinese idea does sit well as well. they better tell us what it means when the game is out though or at least tell us if we got it right...lol.

I don't think Apocrypha has anything to do with it ... the word means something and it was used as such to name some biblical books (the hidden books ?) but has no religious meaning of it's own.
I have found another reference to 514:

PEOPLE PEOPLE PEOPLE! THINK!
CCP said after the first trailer was shown that an Eve player could work out what the title refers to. Since nobody here seems to have figured it out yet I will give you half of it.
In the presentation it is referred as DUST 5-14. That is Five Fourteen. Not Five One Four. Not five hundred and fourteen nor fifty-one four. Now as an Eve player you are not required to know the bible or any other holy scripture or Mandarin/Cantonese. Maybe the Amarr scriptures but the solution is not there.
Watch the trailer again for the presentation. Facts:
1. Part of it takes place in Intaki 2. There is a ishukune space station in the trailer. There is none atm. 3. Ishukone won the blind auction the rights to "develop" the Intaki system and this system only. Just look at the news archive on this. 4. Read also the chronicle Blind Auction on the above. 5. Ishukone developed and marketed the pod technology after acquiring it from the Jovians. 6. The only way you would call something 5-14 in Eve is.... Planet 5 moon 14 or planet 5 belt 14. Look point #2....right.
(Future) Ishukone Station at Intaki 5-14 is where the new cloning technology is going to be developed/invented. DUST 514 is lke the codename of the project like the Spartan project in Halo. Now you know where 514 refers to. If you figure out DUST I will give you a cookie.

Hmm interesting find...
If 514 is a number sequence from chinese translated to immortality..
Then the word Dust combined w 514 makes perfect sense..
Dust is a pun on the hebrew translation of the word Adam.
Thus the grunts on the planets are deemed Immortal hunks of dust..
The non dying men..
If this is not the answer, I would almost think its better then "the solution"..

Many of these are either good coincidences, between the Mandarian Chinese (hell I don't know if it's right, I haven't even bothered to verify if it's actually chinese or not) and some scriptures, but if it were to refer to any it would be the Amarr:
"Which test reveals more of the soul, the test that a man will take to prove his faith, or the test that finds the man who believed his faith already proven? If you know this answer, then you also know which of these challenges bear the greatest penalty for failure. The gates of paradise will open for you one time only; woe to the soul who dares to knock twice." - The Scriptures, Book of Missions 5:14
Highly likely this refers to pod pilots, and how they are damned by cheating death through cloning, and that royal Amarr flesh is considered sacred and uncloneable. Code-naming it DUST 514 may refer to the cloning of elite drop soldiers so that, much like an pod pilot, a resource (the essence of the human being, the soul and consciousness) is never lost.

Elitist?
Wire me the money for a console and you can have all my eliteness
Seriously I'm not paying for a console just to play 1 game.
The only reason for me to buy a console would be DUST, the only reason I'll probably not play DUST is the console. So CCP has to decide at one point, do they wanna work for the good of the console industry or for the good of them selves? If DUST doesnt come out on PC, its CCPs loss.
Why do you think EVE supports Linux and MAC OS systems? You dont force the customer to buy something, you adapt your product according to your customers' needs.
Also as a personal side note; I would claim that the console peeps are the elitists wanting DUST only on console so they can justify the stupid prices they paid for an overly advanced gameboy, which they probably need to throw away and upgrade to a new one in a year or 2.
Oh and I played on almost all consoles, Nintendo Wii is the only one that makes any sense to buy a console.
