Well, there's no real way to tell the difference between a bot and a guy from viewing in game. Stuff you can look for:
1) Exact timings. Get your stopwatch out and figure out if the guy is warping to and from the station, flipping on the strip miners, etc...on an exact schedule. Most bots don't have a random time thingy attached to them as it would degrade their throughput. 2) 23 hour operation. Same guy(s), constantly mining in the same spot(s) on a schedule. Every day/week. (ore mining bots will start a cycle of cleaning out belts in systems in the same order after every belt respawn, ice bots will just warp to a spot and mine. Usually in range of a secure can to transfer ore to the hauler, or just back and forth to the same spot) 3) Gank the guy..does the pod keep coming back and forth from station to the spot? If so, you've *definately* found someone running a macro. --

I cannot in good conscience recommend that anyone who would ask the question 'how do you spot a macro miner' blast a pod with their main. They know not what they do.
Create an alt. Get alt into a destroyer. Fit with short-range, high-damage guns...Blow the snot out of pod with alt.
Discover the sound of a podding sounds good..take alt to lowsec, fund with high sec shenanigans until you get good..Make alt main..you're done. --

How to find macroers
1. Go to high sec ice belt 2. Look for the silly names huddled around a can with a hauler coming at precise intervals to pick it up 3. ???? 4. Profit?

Macro Ice miners are a sure bet for easy ISK. Not all of them are smart enough to use secure cans. Many still do simple jet mining. Even some human Ice miners still do simple jet mining.
Get a blocakde runner.
Sidle up to jet can.
Load your holds. So what if they shoot you? You are stabbed and tanked and they can't do bugger all about it.
Warp to station and unload.
Rinse and repeat.

Edited by: Bad Harlequin on 27/05/2009 20:53:16 Something like this is usually a pretty good indication, yeah.
There's always The Bump. Most humans start asking questions in local when you ram them a few times. Just say your docking computer is on the fritz again...
If they go offcourse and don't say a word, you've probably hit a macro. disclaimer: that bump method may be waaaay out of date. But the part about local is, i'd wager, still true :D
Edit: just noticed OP's name. This is for you

All good advice...cheers.
Its a real pity that the sites that sell these damn things don't have a "look what some of our customers are saying" section with the macro miners name attached to "Easy to set up, I was mining with NO effort in minutes" - Macro Mickey....would make things easier.
So, really, look for patterns, silly names, they are quiet when bumped, they have "ming" in their name, (all though I suspect, without checking, that there is a valid char named Merciless Ming somewhere in EVE - I have however seen a few Wangs...does that count I wonder?), "do it" with an alt, and say sorry if they mail you telling you how much they hate you and that you are a ****?
Seems pretty straight forward/

Add solo hulks, ninja mining at random belts, to this list and you're good to go. Anyone ninja-mining in a hulk must die for even resembling a macro miner!

1. Shoot the miner you think might be a bot. JUST ONCE. 2. It should just go into shield, Then claim to be doing a "spy check" from team Fortress 2. 3. Hope the miner takes it for what it is and doesn't give you to hard of a response.

Step zero would have to be "Convince concord not to WTFPWN you as you don't intend to kill the guy."

Well how about a couple of things I have noticed...ships that are not named...for example I have seen hulks out there sitting around doing absolutely nothing, named xxxxx's Hulk. I watched one logoffski in one asteroid belt one day. Its just something that I've noticed with greater frequency lately, it may be nothing. Someone put forward this idea a few months ago and its dynamite. CCP could easily solve the problem by establishing a "challange" system. ... you suspect a miner to be a bot. You try to convo. ... if he has his auto-reject on ... or he doesn't respond in 30 minutes he turns blinky red. .... problem solved. easy peasy.
CCP ... are you listening?

Now it I absoulutly love messing with these guys but it's just getting old... Cheaters in games that is... What about filing a petition on these ever so gifted people and getting them banned from eve? If the petition goes through aren't they going to get their IP blocked? So they're gone for good! I'd be ****ed if all ccp does is ban the account and some macro moron cant start back up his/her crap again.
I am seriously debating on setting a group of individuals to go around and start trying to get hackers/cheaters/etc banned from whatever game it is that they're exploiting... great games are being ruined everyday because of little kids- IT DRIVES ME INSANE!!!
...or we can just find them in person beat them to a pulp and videotape/youtube the beating lol... I know that was little much over a game lol. I understand I need therapy but honestly I'm ok.

Ships that are always at the same spot, no matter what time of day you come through the belt.
Of course, assuming they are not using secure cans, my favourite way to find out is to see how many cans of ore I can get hauled to a station before anyone says anything in local, or convos me. Usually I get bored first.
Also anyone who doesnt respond to a ship orbitting them for 20 mins is a giveaway.
Usually I get some expletives followed by something about not having expensive ore in the cans, even when all I am doing is flying in circles admiring the pretty ships.

Sure, no problem. Just be prepared to pay out 2 million ISK every time you try and decide if I am a macro or not (CSPA charge ftw).

As a miner, if you are yellow (or red), and flying a non-mining ship, I'm not gonna hang around for long.
For example. Recently was mining when an Orca warped in. Orca was followed by a CNR and a Brutix(?), both yellow with bounties. I didn't wait for the strip miner cycle to end before warping away.

De ... sounds like you're not a fan of my glorious system lol. But you make a couple of valad points.
This meanns that ccp would have to program a miner challange system ... not that hard to do (easy for me to say). AND they would need to limit the number of challanges a miner could get (say one per hour) to reduce the harrassment factor.
Oh, and it would be even better if you got a bounty for killing a bot!

Ok, on a serious note.
No, I am not a fan of anything that makes my life a PITA in game. I get enough of that in the real world - I mean honestly, I have kids, a husband, and a job! I don't need annoying crap in my recreational activities too.
Hmm, I am not sure that came out the way I meant it, but you get the idea.
Anyway, I agree, Macros = bad, and someone needs to put foot to ass to stop them from profiting, but I have yet to see a failsafe way of identifying a macro that doesn't include legitamate players too. I would rather let a few macros in than punish real players for being too macro-like.
This includes your idea - what if I'm AFK (as I occasionally am to deal with the children, or make dinner, or visit the room of the porcelin goddess) when your challenge comes in? One would think 30 minutes would be long enough, but I do occasionally get shanghaied by one of the kids while I'm playing and have to go deal with that - and while I try and dock beforehand, sometimes I don't get a chance to, so there my ship is, merrily mining away with my wee drones orbiting blissfully while your arbitrary timer runs out and I am suddenly Public Enemy Number 1.
And while I could, yes, petition that after the fact, my point is I shouldn't have to. --Vel

Here is my list. Some or all of these:
-npc character, no bio, no employment history, no standings -uses crap fit hulk, something no real player would use -ignores rats, player agression, evemail, local, and private chats -does not jetcan or have alt hauling, does not have booster -follows pattern unfailingly and does predictive behavior when disrupted from pattern (ie, you bump it away, it docks, undocks, warps to belt, resumes mining) -if bumped or ganked, ignores, comes back next day, new hulk, same place, same pattern -online 24/7

I see your (and others as well) point. ... with many miners only paying somewhat attention to the game, a challange system would just add another thing that pulls them away from RL. As owner of an alt who heads up a family friendly corp (Nephite Tribe)I suppose I should know this. .... well, I guy can dream I suppose. And just as someone else said, if ccp wanted to do something about this they would have by now. I believe that to be true. Anyway, good discussion.
