Hi mates,
Been playin since about christmas last year and im almost there with my Drake and should soon be able to solo level 4's in it..
I have no gun skils at all atm though and have a feeling missiles alone will leave me a bit limited for pvp which i want to get into once ive got some isk rolling in.
So i am going to train in rail guns once my drake is finished and would also like to fly ships from other races.
I have read that Gallente can also use use rail guns as well as other guns..
Im just wondering what the preferred choice of guns are for pvp in Gallente ships, would i be able to take my missile and rail gun skills to their ships or do most pvp'ers prefer differnt guns other than rails ?
thanks for reading..

Gallente tend to use Hybrid (Railguns + Blasters) and Drones. Both of which are used by Caldari to a lesser extent.
In addition to the Hybrid Turret skills there are a number of general gunnery skills. All of those would be useful if you want to cross train for projectiles or lasers.
Likewise, your capacitor, navigations and fitting skills will be useful for any race of ships that you choose to cross train.

Most Gallente ships use hybrid weapons, which are either blasters or railguns.
Training for advanced hybrids means that it is only a short time before you can fit the other, e.g. tech 2 medium blasters require medium hybrid 5, and so do t2 medium railguns.
Also, some Gallente ships can use rails effectively, such as the megathron, so the training won't be entirely wasted, if you don't train blasters now. The same can also apply to Caldari ships, as they can use blasters as well (e.g. the Blaster harpy). ________________________________________________ Check out my ideas! New Destroyers |

Don't forget to train your armor tanking skills, you will need that for PVP fits.

The "best" gallente ships are the drone boats. That said, if you've bothered to train T2 rails for some reason, Gallente have some ships like the Lachesis that are "ok". In general, the best Gallente ships for pvp, in no particular order, are:
Dominix, Ishtar, Vexor - there are many good fittings for these ships that don't use any turret weapons - just Neuts and the Drone control range extension
If you want to fly a fleet sniping BS, I'd recommend the Rokh over the Megathron.
If you want to fly a sniping HAC, go for the Eagle, not the Deimos.
The gallente Force Recon - Arazu - is no longer useless since scrams shut down MWD's. That said, like other Recons, it's made of paper and you won't be soloing very much in it. All in all, if Force Recons are an objective I'd go for the Falcon or Rapier before the Arazu.
The gallente logistics ship - Oneiros - is pretty crappy. There is no valid reason to train for one over the Amarr Guardian, which gets bonuses to both cap transfer and remote armor rep.
Information warfare leadership bonuses, enhanced by Gallente Command Ships, are also the worst of all. Minmatar boost MWD speed (much reduced since the speed nerf) and extend tackling range (web, warp disruptors and scrams). Caldari improve shields and Amarr improve armor.
All in all, I'd say unless you want to fly a Drone boat, you have much better options to train over Gallente. Of course, the gallente carrier is considered the best by some (bonuses to both remote armor/shield rep range) and the Moros is pretty much the second best dread (good cargo room, and good decent dps when they can use sentry drones). Both are inexpensive to fit, as well. I have a Gallente alt that flies only capital ships and the Dominix, and I don't regret training it that way at all.
Gallente pros: great drone boats, great capital ships Gallente cons: non-drone boats are generally crap, although the Mega is still a serviceable fleet sniper, crappy T2 ships in general compared to most other races
Final note: while you CAN do level 4 missions in a Drake, it doesn't mean you SHOULD. Use a Raven for god's sake. People have used them for level 4's forever.

Edited by: Louis deGuerre on 26/05/2009 23:07:35 The Thorax is a great throwaway T1 cruiser for battles. Never underestimate it, probably the best Gallente value for money ship. Also very popular is the Ishkur assault frigate, always a crowd pleaser. The Arazu is also a nice ship if you fit it well. The T1 frigs are pretty good as well. Gallente have some great ships beyond the drone boats.
Other races also have very good ships that are used a lot. --- Sol: A microwarp drive? In a battleship? Are you insane? They arenĘt built for this! Clear Skies - The Movie |

Caldari to Gallente is probably the most obvious cross-train to make.
I started off as a mission runner and ended up with a lot of missile skill points. After trying combat, missiles do not cut it especially in fleet warfare so I trained up my railgun skills, then moved onto blasters. Having a lot of the support skills made it easier to move to Gallente as the weapons used are similar.
As other posters have pointed out, you may wish to consider adding drone skills to compliment gunnery skills.

i think caldria to amarr cross trains better, amarr have some nice missile boats and if you fly the rook or falcon the recon skills enables the curse and pilgrim

The same goes for Minmatar as they have some use for missiles and also use shieldtanking on some ships.

BCs are an easy crosstrain.
Blasters are popular if you fight at eyepoke range.

One thing I've noticed is that as I've moved up in ships I needed to train Drones and Missiles for everybody.
I've also had reason to train both armor tanking and shield tanking skills for most of my characters as many of them are industrialists/miners and the ships they fly are all shield tankes as their low slots are filled with other things.
With that in mind - gunnery - seems to be the one thing where there isn't any commonality - except - between the Caldari and Gallente which both use Hybrid weapons.
However ... I've also noted that because you can destroy some structures on missions that will drop faction loot ... you want to have Laser Skils - so you don't spend more ISK in ammo blowing the thing up than you're going to get out of it.
Sooooo ... it seems to me that the prime criteria here are - what is it that you want to do and where are you starting from in your individual skills?
If you have a Gallente that is an industrialist and there fore has trained shield tanking in addition to his armor tanking skills for his combat ships - all he has to train - is the skills for the ships themselves to cross train Caldari ships. Of course the same can't be said for the Caldari guy going to Gallente as he's not likely to have his armor tanking skills trained up.
Other factors are what you've done about your basic armor and shield skills such as Mechanic, Hull Upgrades, Shield Operation and Shield Maintenance. Even if you are not primarily an armor or primarily a shield tanker you can benefit from having these skills trained as you will get some benefit from them. Everyone has shields and everyone has armor. These just give you more of it. In some ways - it is more important for an armor tanker to train up his basic shield skills than it is for a shield tanker - as the armor tanker isn't likely to be carrying a shield booster and thus needs as fast a recharge rate as he can get. I have in fact on some of my Catalysts - added a Civilian Shield Booster - not as part of the tank - but to buff the shield back up after the fight before I jump through the next acceleration gate.

Fix'd. Missiles are great for PVP. 200km fleet sniping is the only place where they really lack.
