I doubt anyone is wetting themselves and I think its a bit much to say that CCP's documentation on grids is lacking. What this document offers is a consolidated resource on the mechanic of grid manipulation, and it's the first of any publically available resource detailing the subject with this depth. Its possible that that these details haven't been specifcally collected in a single resource created by CCP.
That said, I thought it was an amazing read. There is a lot of detail in this guide that covers all sides of the process, making it impressively complete.

Edited by: Opera Noir on 26/05/2009 21:50:07 That's a nice guide, and as a fairly new player, it finaly makes grids make sense to me. Thanks.
As for it being exploitive eh, not really. While it may not be intended to be used as such, grid manipulation does make for more intresting possiblites then simply warping ot a point in space and shooting at another point. Unfair it certainly is not, unless prepareing a battle field is unfair, or having a better fit or having better intel. Either side in a conflict has the exact same access to these possiblities and their counters, so I dont see why it would be 'unfair'.
Also Im glad it was on the general forums for a bit there, or I wouldn't have caught it.
edit- 'cause I never get it right the first time

Quite obvious to me that CCP have read it and, not knowing what to do, have locked the thread in the General Discussion board and moved this thread to one of the least visited boards in the forum.

It actually does make sense to implement grids the way CCP has - this way the grid can expand as it needs to in order to accommodate large fleet battles and make space seem a bit more natural, where with static grid squares, ships would constantly be disappearing off the edge of the grid during fleet fights.
I doubt CCP intended for them to be manipulated like this, but you can tell a bit of thought went into the programming. |

Bear in mind this is what they choose to share. If this blows your mind imagine the things they choose to only provide to their fleet commanders.

Nice one goons. Im pretty sure this is solidly an exploit. At least in terms of manipulating pos grids and creating gridwalls to jump when you get primaried.
On the other hand, CCP designed the game this way. Its a foundation mechanic for how the game works. Its hard to complain when the mechanic is built right into the engine and someone rips off the tarp and exposes it.
10/10 My favorite is the cooridor grid so that you don't lag out on warp in right in the middle of the enemy fleet.

Yes:

Strategically placing items in grids around POS towers for the purpose of hiding the towers is an exploit and action will be taken against those found doing it.
Why would hiding a POS be bannable? That is just stupid. You can scan in down in a few seconds from anywhere in the system.

Because you can shrink the grid down to less than 100km on any side of the pos, forcing fleets to get up close and personal with them. Also, you can make the grids so that the pos isn't visible on the warpin to the moon.

OK, "hiding" the POS has been declared an exploit.
Other then that, expanding the grid or "shaping" it is still legal, right? For example the "load-fight-at-safe-distance". I mean, if it's not forbidden, then it's allowed, right?

To trolls/noobs/morons: Stop with the whining already - jesus fing christ.
I really despise idiots who are unable to utilize the possibilities of a sandbox game to their favor due to lack of intelligence and then whine that mechanics should be changed/nerfed/made banable.
If you aren't smart/adaptable/able to copy others you deserve to get owned repeatedly by those who can do those things - don't whine about mechanics, figure out how to utilize them to your favor! Seriously, its because of that type of people we see warning on electrical outlets "Dont put fork in! you'll get electrocuted and die!". Natural selection FTW!
To goons:
I <3 you guys - guide looks awesome! Time to do some testing. =======================================
