I no good at pvp combat I avoid if necessary. Friend keeps dragging me out to low-sec for missions. Don't want to let him down and have been rather lucky with it usually of course I fly mostly frigs out there. But I have a question about a gate camp I ran into that I just can't figure out what they are doing to kill me so quickly.
I was in a Thrasher (min. destroyer) warping to gate in a 0.2 system. Lags a little (I immediately think, gatecamp) have finger on button to jump as soon as exit warp...
Exit warp, Yes it's gatecamp, click mouse to jump...dosen't jump...click again...dosen't jump no message. Glance at shields/armor see shields gone in one hit, and armor half way in the second. Right click warp to asteroid field....Glance at status...I'm at 1/4 hull...
Boom! Ship is gone before I could align.
Ok so the whole thing takes less than 5 seconds. I had equipped two warp stabilizers for just such an occasion. My questions are:
1.) how are they able to lock me and so quickly as the amount of dmg I was taking had to have been at least medium guns, seemed like 3 hits and I was gone.
2.) why couldn't I jump, the only thing I could figure was I came out of warp too far away from the gate? I though I saw some blue spheres of energy but obviously didn't stay long enough to click on them to see what they were. I thought bubbles were not allowed in low-sec.
3.) How can I avoid these type of camps in the future?
Thanks

Edited by: Robert0288 on 30/03/2009 19:42:17 What you most likely encountered was a battleship with Lots of large smart bombs. They don't need to lock to be able to kill you. Your ship probably died long before you were able to load grid, try messing around with overview settings and graphics settings to speed grid load.
Only way to avoid this type of camp is by warping to the gate from a different direction, or have an SS 155+ km away from the gate in a random direction to let you see if you can get to the gate safely
Also by chance would this lowsec system be Rancer?

Edited by: Eisbrecker on 30/03/2009 19:57:51 yes a smart bomb would explain the high dmg I guess but why couldn't I jump? That is the main thing that is bugging me. My corp mates also say I should have been able to jump without issue.
System was Hagilur gate to Bei, in minmatar space.
Player that killed me was member of HEAT! or something like that. Saw at least 3 of them in local, didn't fly back to see what they were flying. |

Did you get podded immediatly? If you did, then it was smartbombs.
Another possible cause was that sometimes, ships dont warp to within 2500 meters of the gate. On such occassions you must approach gate and then jump. If you did try to warp away and couldn't, it is likely that a Heavy Interdictor pointed you with a script. Although bubbles are not allowed in low sec, the bubble animation is usually shown when using the script even though it is not actually there.

I was aligning when I finally popped so it wasen't that I couldn't warp but that I couldn't jump through. The only reason I wouldn't be able to jump through would be because I wasn't in range right?
I know for certain I warped to zero on that gate.
So you're saying it's a bug or something my ship didn't warp to zero? Or is there something pirates are using in low-sec that takes us out of warp farther away from gate???
Again, please enlighten me, I'm just trying to learn.
My pod was damaged but not destroyed and I literally warp as soon as it appeared on my screen so yea it was probably a smart bomb he used to destroy my ship.

He wins. 99% it was a sensor boosted/remote sensor boosted HIC. Only thing that has a chance escaping is a fast aligning frigate IF it warps to something that is relatively in front of it. It would be sporting medium guns as well.
If your DD was fitted with inertia stabs and your evasive maneuvering is 4+, you might have escaped, unless there was also a boosted intie in the gang.

They were likely sensor boosting each other which makes locks very very fast. No way you could likely escape that camp in a Thrasher.

couldnt jump?? well that could be you wasnt within 2500m, you had just accepted a gang invite and had session timer, you came out of a short warp from gate to gate and had some seconds left of session timer, you panicked seeing all the sexy blinkys and hit wrong button, there are many things you could have done wrong son.

Ahhhh, thank you for this. So according to this I was killed by 3 armageddons and an absolution? No wonder I popped in 3 hits.
I had no idea you could get all this information online like this...pretty neat.
Well good for them I guess, had to be crazy fast to lock and kill a destroyer with 3 battleships and a battlecruiser in less than 5 seconds.
Luckily I had it fully insured but the loot I had in cargo was worth much more than the ship probably. ah well...could have been much worse. |

Actually, if you bring up your Charater sheet and go to combat logs. (Bottom on the left) and go to losses. Then right click view killmail you can see the same information.

The jump button isn't perfect, sometimes it lags. One time, while I was still in FW, I was warping through Amarr hi sec and got stuck on one of the gates. It said "session change is already in progress," but the NPCs were still shooting me. I eventually managed to jump, but it was a lame situation. Unfortunately, the jump button cannot be counted on to save you. ----

Once upon a time, people recommended setting destination for the next system... or even for your final destination.
Then manually start the WTZ, and active autopilot after you're in warp. That -should- make you autojump as soon as you arrive, without the client delay of the jump button registering. Then you switch it off again, so you can manually WTZ on the next gate.
Lately though, I've noticed that even the AP takes its time before initiating a jump. --- Players aren't interested in Variety, they only want THE BEST. |

I haven't seen it happen in awhile, but every so often I used to hit the gate and get bounced out past the jump radius.

This is your problem. WCS are lame as hell, and a huge hit to your karma. The result is an equally huge increase in your lag, bugs, crashes, etc. If you didn't have the WCS fit, you probably would have landed within jump range and jumped out with no problems. -----------

Ever since QR jumping through gates is not a guaranteed thing. You need to spam the button - even then it seems to take longer than it should.

You will also get the can't do this while in warp message when you arrive at gate on AP if lagging, ie you will not jump atall. CCP gets the killmail. |

yep I hear ya...
The thing is I didn't get a message at all...I spammed jump at least 3 times before I tried to warp away because nothing was happening, of course by then it was too late.
A corp mate also suggested the autopilot trick I'll have to look into that.
I suppose the lessons learned are:
1) Scan system for ships, If I warped to a planet close by and scanned towards the gate I would have seen the armaggeddons at the gate of course traveling like this takes forever...but that's the price for working in low-sec I guess (no wonder people hate it).
2) EVE client is buggy and laggy as hell, shouldn't rely on jumping fast to get me through a camp. Cuz it obviously dosen't matter how fast you can click the button.
THanks all for advice

Thanks for the suggestion but I don't believe I should have to purchase and run another account just to travel through space.
I will just stay out of low-sec unless I"m looking for a fight and if so will assume there's an unpassable gate camp at each gate and be prepared to scan before each jump or just take the chance again. |
