It'll probably come as a shock to you, but some people actually enjoy writing, just as others enjoy reading it. Just because you don't, doesn't mean there isn't a point to it. Maybe you should buy WoW and roll a troll there?

Fiction I get.
Fan fiction - what's the line between that and fiction?
Is it simply a derivative work?

Usually. Sometimes it deviates so far from canon as to become nothing more than an exploitation of the base material.

Yes, fan fiction is just a fan writing about an already established world. So instead of making up their own, they write about eve and create their own story line. Although there is a fine line between fan fiction and plagiarism.

The definition of fan fiction is derivative work, yes. In Japan it's called doujinshi (amateur work) and is often published in limited runs. Doujinshi popular in the US are usually those related to shipping, in a rather... explicit fashion. _________________

So fair do's, fan fiction is a derivative work.
The Eve fan base is much brighter than usual and there is a lot more fan fiction than is usually present in most MMO's. So what purpose does it fulful within Eve?
Gak it took three posts to work out what I was originally trying to say. Apologies for that one. |

Fanfiction fulfills a desire to express oneself and to read more quality EVE fiction, which CCP doesn't provide. _________________

Hence me mistaking you for a troll in your initial post.
In any case, yes, it's fiction written by fans that take place in (in the case) the EVE universe. The quality varies greatly, but there's some great stuff out there. Most (if not all?) of the EVE stories published in the EON magazine are actually written by players and are usually a fun read (in my opinion, of course).

CCP won't give us any chronicles with kinky Achura on Achura action so people have to write their own.
*Reads thread* Oh, erm, nevermind.

That's one kind of fan fiction, but does fan fiction in Eve serve to reinforce the overall "feeling" of the universe? How many people read it? Why is it read? What's the point for you?
Hmm I'm making this a moving target. |

Edited by: Miss Uylear on 15/02/2009 21:06:53 Blunt aspect is that writers die in the end. What problem do you think this poses?
I for one simply can't wait for the current trend of writers to snuff it. This will make space for me soon enough, and I will be published to buggery.
Fan fiction is a most needed commodity, as EVE's writers will also die with their content going with them. So new writers must be found to keep the stocks up. You never know, maybe Verone will one day be approached by CCP and asked to make some story lines for missions for a new expansion. you just never know...

Fan fiction as an interview for mission design? Interesting. |

It would be the mother of all Fan Fiction competitions.
And, perhaps from a marketing point of view... if you get my drift : )

Is that the sole point of fan fiction? Eve's got an abundance of fan fiction, surely not all of it is to fulfil the role of "interview for level design"?

...
First, 00-000
Now...
The point of Fan Fiction is that it lets ppl create... no, scrub that. Did you ver play with Lego? Meccano? Building blocks of any kind? Were you ever impressed with someones creation so much you felt compelled to contribute to it as well? That you had to enter this realm of thought and become one with it?
I haven't. Just curious...
