can you do it with mining drones in .9 or 1.0 space? i know its slow but orcas can fit like 20mil worth of veld in cargo.

Anyone who mined from an orca directly would deserve to have their ass handed to them by the first passing pirate. That is not what it is for. An orca is mining suport, not a solo miner.

Can you AFK mine with an Orca's drones in 0.9 or above? Certainly! However, as the Very Angry Poster above me should illustrate, many people in EVE would consider such an expensive ship left AFK in a belt an irresistible target. You'd likely return to the keys a few hours later to find yourself the victim of a suicide gank.
If you really want to AFK mine, set up yourself an industrial with a mining laser. People like to suicide those too, but won't be nearly as painful to lose.

If you were to AFK mine near the biggest asteroids in hisec space (about 110k), and you had five of them nearby, you could set one mining drone on to each asteroid. Then you'd come back a few days later to find that the mining drones had gone idle due to the hold being full.
One point I must raise here is that many asteroids in hisec are in teh piddly small 5-20k range, which means you'd be mining for many hours to retrieve as much as a mining barge does in one cycle.
Have fun, enjoy. Industrial with T2 mining laser is the way to go unless you have Drone Interfacing 5, Mining Drone Operation 5, Harvester mining drones, and can sit the Orca within 4km of five huge asteroids. I haven't run the numbers, but my T1 mining drones are equivalent to about half to a third of one T2 strip miner.
Having said that, you'll have more luck with a hulk, T1 strip miners, and three asteroids. The hulk can be rigged and fitted to have a huge cargo capacity, and having three strip miners means you can suck up ore from three piddly asteroids and fill the hold, instead of 1 piddly asteroid.
Your mileage may vary.

doubtful, orcas have lots of hp.
and yea it would work. not very efficient, but better than an afk industrial.

Let's put it this way... if you simply TURN OFF your computer, using the money you save not using up all that electricity to buy GTCs you will get more ISK.

If you can fly an Orca, you can fly a Covetor, which means in a few hours you could fly a Hulk.
A Hulk with strips, a scanner, the same drones, and about 30 minutes will mine in 1 hour what it would take an Orca with drones about 7 hours to do. Your choice.

Not true, my Orca pilot is 21 days from a Covetor and 22 days from a Hulk.
The Orca only requires Astrogeology 3, not Astrogeology 5.

Could be quite possible....would take an organized group to suicide an orca..

Or maybe they'd just annoy you by smartbombing your mining drones, so you come back to an empty Orca.
If there was no response from the Orca pilot, they might just go get some ships and suicide it.......or inform Goonswarm of your location - they had it in for high-sec carebear exhumer pilots a while back - they might just be interested in shooting an Orca (although they're rather tied up annoying Kenny right now).
Like someone said before - a T1 industrial with a mining laser would be just as efficient and far cheaper to replace (even replacing it 100 times over). ______________________ Isn't it time you learned to fight back? Agony Unleashed Home of the PvP University.

plus have you seen the cost of an orca! seriosuly, half a billion in evershore as an example, you basically need a hulk to get that much

This topic makes me wanna go out and destroy all Orcas I come across, and I have an alt that flies one. That's how much this idea fails. Seriously, $15/mo so you can AFK a ship to earn 20mil every twelve hours? It'll take you the equivalent of 15 days straight 24 hours a day of AFK mining in the Orca just to recoup the cost of investing in one.
WTF is wrong with people. _______________________________________________
