I jumped into my first freighter yesterday, my first big expensive ship. In the past I've been ganked once in hisec when I had a couple hundred million worth of cargo on board in my old industrial ship and I've been a lot more careful since then. I understand that I am always at risk when undocking from a station but if I'm hauling very valuable cargo but is it likely that I am going to be attacked in a freighter in hisec? TLDR version: Yes.
Regular answer: Yes. Remember, suicide gankers are playing the odds - they KNOW they are going to lose their ship and everything on it, and are hoping that what they kill will drop enough, in both cargo and modules, to make a VERY handsome profit on each gank. Therefore, their higher-priority targets are going to be the weakly defended ships; i.e. the transports in general, since as a general rule they can be killed quickly - before CONCORD can get there, usually - unless you tank it, of course :)
Bigger the transport, the bigger the potential profits - and freighters are big, juicy targers as a general rule - siimply becaus eof the amount of cargo they can carry.
Five seconds of thought should have toild you this.

If you're carrying cargo worth into the billions on a freighter then yes, you're at risk. However, freighters have a lot of HP to chew through, so unless you're carrying something ridiculously valuable, you're probably fine.
Keep in mind, the lower the sec status of the system, the longer it takes CONCORD to arrive, making it easier for gankers to kill you. |

In high sec you got 5 sec for CONCORD to show up. That means you get one volley out of your weapons. If you fit tec 2 you will need 40 BS (very best case) to get that dmg.

Woefully vague. The CONCORD response time varies a lot between 1.0 and .5

4.9 rof on an overloaded good skilled torp raven, so that is 20 ravens
in a .5 I think you might even be able to get off 3 volleys.
...and to think I could get off 2 volleys pr- qr in a 1.0, with my ****e skills |

This is kind of obvious I mean... Think about it from a pirate point of view.
You see a transport, a big slow transport at that. What do transports usually carry? Shiny objects for the taking. If you're gonna be shipping around valuables you should probably gear up to be able to soak up a lot of damage in a short timeframe, or hire/befriend someone to escort you.
Escorting probably won't be optimal since if you're in hi-sec your goal is to just live long enough for CONCORD to blast the pirate into bits. |

Short answer, yeah. It used to happen a lot more frequently before the suicide ganking nerf a few months back.
But if you have a couple bil in your freighter, or do a route regularly with high value cargo, expect that eventually someone will try.
Also, I hear Niarja is a good way to avoid suicide gankers. Just sayin'.

The keyword is the try, when we're talking about Freigters we're talking about EHP of ~140k (add in good mechanic, hull upgrades and shield managment levels and we are at ~170k). You'll need small army of battleships to pop a freigter before you'll get CONCORDED :) |
