I know about the occasional "Power of Two" special offer from CCP, but what about the technicalities of running two accounts?
Do I have to install EVE a second time on my hard drive, in another directory? Or is this optional? If it is optional, what are the benefits of doing so? Can I get a free trial for my second account? One advantage of a couple of weeks of free play is that I can see whether my computer can actually run two instances of the EVE client at reasonable (PVE) performance...

No

You gain no benefits, as far as I'm aware

Yes, however, I don't believe the power of two allows this. However, feel free to do up a trial account now, it'll tell you whether you can or not

If you've got a computer made in the last few years 2 simultaneous accounts should be very easy. You only start to really strain your pc's architecture when you run 4 or more |

Doing a free trial run soon, to see whether my hardware is up to the task, could be a good idea.
My computer is 38 months old, bought in November 2005, with a Pentium IV 3.00 GHz, 2 GB RAM and an NVDIA 6800 GT card.

Trial accounts can't be logged in on the same machine with any other account, trial or otherwise. Only full accounts qualify. If you try one full and one trial, the trial won't log in (or won't stay logged in).
P.S. Your machine should have no big problems running two "classic" clients at the same time, but the framerate won't be anything to write home about. Just make sure you ramp down the cache settings and so on. |

Well i can try with two full accounts, to see if it really DOES work :) And how the framerate is gonna be. Signatures are bad luck - And i love to jinx. |

Running 2 accounts on the same machine work reasonably well for me using classic clients . I tried premium when it was first deployed and the framerate was horrible. No idea of how it will work now after the client improvements.
Note that in my experience if you upgrade the client from classic to premium you get reduced framerates when using 2 accounts even if you run it as a classic version.

You're best off to make a copy of the EVE client (call it EVE-2 or something) and launch the 2nd account from there. You'll have less overlap with all kinds of settings and, in general, it speeds things up a bit.
Also, you should use the "/end /LUA:OFF" extension to the shortcut, meaning that the cache etc won't be dumped in some windows dir but rather the game dir itself. It's always useful but especially so when running more than 1 account.

There used to be a bug with this where you could log onto the trial first and then log into the full account and the trial would remain connected. I have no idea if they fixed this since my accounts are all paid.

However, since it's a bug, we tend to classify using it as an exploit and using it would result in a banstick.
