Pirates seemed like a cool job.. but I just hate being mean to people. Killing pirates seemed like an honorable cause.. but I hate the frustrations that I hear.. come with killing pirates and all the dirty warfare involved... time passed and I have 2 accounts because. One of them is a hauler, the other is a miner/fighter. I've been playing for roughly 1 month.
My hauler now has an Iteron V with 5 Expanded Cargo II's. After hearing some people talking in local/corp chat... I've been giving some thought to using my hauler as a courier. Looking at the contracts, I can see many of them require that you go through very low security areas.
Is this profession worth the trouble? To maybe.. AFK haul stuff and such? I understand that I'll come under attack by pirates in the low security areas... what would be the best setup for me to slip past pirates with my Iteron V? What should I put in all those slots?
I hear that you can "discover what they call "Secret" routes? How would I discover these? What makes them "secret routes"?
Any good websites/guides that cover hauling? Thanks so much for your time!
PS. I don't have a corp, anyone want a guy with a hauler and a miner? :P 29 year old mature adult, probably play 20-24 hours a week and AFK/mining while at work. Lemme know! Thanks! |

AFK hauling isn't good. You won't slip an Itty V past gatecamps. Secret routes are.. Well, secret. Basically it's a route where you buy some secret stuff from point A and haul it to B and sell it there. It's a secret because when someone reveals their route, the profit from it will die a horrible and painful death. |

Edited by: Crucible5 on 08/01/2009 20:23:11 Yeah hauling is ok, but only AFK in high sec, otherwise you'll find yourself getting popped in low sec and you won't be able to do anything about it.
Hauling in low sec, you really want some kind of tank and some inertia stabs/warp core stabs in the lows even though it reduces your cargo capacity quite a bit. Eventualy train for transport ships if hauling in low sec is your chosen profession.
Secret routes are most likely routes that aren't generally along the main pipelines or taffic routes.
Lastly, a lot of haulers tend to charge either a percentage of the collateral or charge so much isk per jump... Its worth your while charging per jump though tbh.
(Oh if you do want to avoid low sec for now, make sure you avoid low sec systems in your autopilot settings).
Final thoughts from me though would be, to concentrate your alt into hauling for some extra isk making while still keeping your main for mining and mission running. Mission running/mining will be your main bread and butter though.

Hey hey! Thanks for the advice, big time guys.
Is their no way to cloak my Iteron V? Make it hard to kill when going through low sec? Something? Anything?
It would be cool to do some of these low security contracts... most of them.. I'd say 90% of them are for low security areas and the ones in high sec pay totally crap... 15 jumps paying 60,000 isk.. eh..
So that's it eh? Hauling/courier isn't a good profession unless you have a small fleet accompany you... lame.

You CAN fit a cloak to your hauler which would make you SAFER but it won't make you invincible. You are also able to use warp core stabilizers.
Because you have Gallente Industrial 5, why not look into Transport Ships? They *ARE* virtually invincible in low-sec so those might be better for your purposes.

a well set up blockade runner is virtually untouchable esp now they can warp cloaked the only problem with them is they have rather small cargo bays so no good for moving large loads.
mine does not have a cloak but still manages to get away from sensor boosted hics in low sec no problem |

In answer to the cloak question - an Itty5 can fit a cloak, but it can't warp with it on. Which means to warp out, you'll have to decloak then prey you're not found during the interminable align time.
In answer to the central question - There's two different paths in here, both require two different ships to be viable - neither really works for an Itty5.
Path 1 - Highsec hauls for small rewards. These become profitable with a Freighter, where you can take as many of them as you can then just AFK around highsec dropping them off. Maybe 20 minutes spent at the keyboard, decent profit.
This doesn't work for your Itty5 as it's cargo will be too small to lump a bunch of these contracts together.
Path 2 - Lowsec hauls for larger rewards. These become profitable with a blockade runner (which you're nearly trained for) as the volumes tend to be considerably lower, and the payout considerably higher. Only take these in a blockade runner with istabs and a covert ops cloak. Many people recommend wc stabs, but with the introduction of the HIC sometime back these are no guarantee to safety. Primarily you want to be able to cloak as soon as you arrive, then get into warp before they can decloak you.
Without changing ships - there's no really viable decent income as a hauler. But you're very near to blockade runners, which can help bootstrap you up to freighters.
