The short answer: you heard wrong, don't bother.
The long answer: it's certainly not a great way to make money. Freighters are typically only useful if you actually need them for another sort of venture, such as heavy manufacturing or cross-regional trading or something. Sure, you can freight around Empire, but the opportunities for moneymaking are typically snapped up before you'll get a chance at them. You're better off taking the ISK you'd use to buy the ship and doing something else with it.
Now, can we please stop making this thread over and over? EVE-Search is your friend.

A freighter by itself is not a isk printing press, and nobody on this forum will tell you how to make money with it.
Only you can figure out the best way to make isk, and its not hard. An excel spreadsheet and the willingness to obeserve/figure things out will help you find plenty of opportunities.

Buy stuff. Move it. Sell it.
Or..
Buy stuff. Move it. Change it into other stuff. Move it. Sell it.
Or..
Move stuff other people have bought or made, so that they can sell it.
To be honest, though.. if you're just getting into a trading or manufacturing career, you probably don't need it yet. The 800mil can be better spent in other profit making ventures.

Edited by: Sophil on 30/12/2008 13:12:37 Train to a transport ship instead. Go to jita buy t1/namned/t2 stuff. Bring to another place and sell it for 10-1000% profit!
I also have a freighter, but only use it to move pos fuel or minerals (also loot from my mission alt once every 3-4 months)

Not to be mean or such, but as dozens of people have said in the past. Find a way to make money using a freighter... THEN but the freighter, not the other way around. There is only 1 way to make money with freighter - but it has thousands of variants. Find one that you can exploit, make sure it works, then invest the money in a freighter.

Don't worry about the responses so far paridoth you can make money with a freighter.
You are going to need a hefty wallet for the collateral on many different contracts that will pop up here and there, watch the contracts for jita, rens, hek, and amarr if you don't mind going out that far.
Everybody is going to shout to the heaven's that you can not make money with the ship but thats just plain wrong, many time's I've picked up 50mil or more contracts to get something across the galaxy in a day. I've since paid off the freighter itself by courier contracts alone.
The great thing about being a freighter as well is you have the chance to browse the different trade hub's prices on a daily basis, you should look into trading.
Other good points to having the freighter itself are for production purposes, (which is the main reason i trained the skill for) being able to haul around enough minerals to put a production run through for say 10 battlecruiser's or battleships at a time is a big plus since the jita stations manu slots are always in use.
Bottom line freighters are money machines, anyone who says otherwise is kidding themselves.

All ships in space are capital at risk.
You need to generate a return greater than the capital at risk, plus your trading margin.
The primary use of Freighters is moving ships or massive amounts of Ore.
The idea behind a freighter is that you can buy 25 battleships (or other large good) at 100 Mil isk move them to a trading hub and sell them at 125 mil apiece.
Sadly, competition in this regard is going to be fierce. This usually means you can buy ships at 150 mil and move them to a hub and sell them for 100 mil. This is why most freighter owners do not use them frequently.
If you buy at a hub and move goods to the fringe, you are going to generate profit over a long period of time. So if you spend 1.5 billion buying ships and they sell 9 months from now for a total of 1.6 billion... you could have made a better return from banking. In other words, unless you know of a specific market you can readily and repeatedly serve with a freighter, you would be better off not buying one. Concord doesn't provide consequences. Concord provides insurance payouts. |

I thought this was a post that was bumped.. I could have sworn the exact same word-for-word post was here a month or two ago.
Anyway, get cozy with openoffice, excel or google docs and start crunching numbers. Figure out how much it will cost to buy whatever youre going to fill your freighter with, how much you can sell it and how fast..
Another thing is if you are starting out trading, there are some courier corps out there that will move items for you so you can get to the business of making money.

I like to use the big ships as bait. As they attract all the attention, i can slip on by in a covert ops cloaked crane and watch the show.

There is money to be made but, as someone said, you need to have spare billions either to buy the goods you're looking to trade, e.g. buy 10 x Navy Ravens and sell in some outlying mission station, or for the collateral outlay to pick up the lucrative courier contracts.
Remember though that Freighters are the most mind numbing ship to fly. You're talking about a ship that takes 1 minute just to warp and an approximate total travel time of 5 minutes a jump. Bring plenty of Holoreels with you....

You could fill up the freighter with shuttles and make sure every station has them.

Basically, a Freighter is a cool ship and something that every trader should be having simply because they're awesome. That being said the lack of mobility that a freighter has makes it often quite useless when it's not full (and to fill a Freighter you'll usually need a good ammount of iskies) as a plain industrial often will do the job better as its considerably faster. Lucrative deals that require a Freighter to be carried out aren't that many either, truth to be told, at least not what I'm aware of.
Now that suicide ganks aren't a worry anymore I do see the point of owning one for the sake of trading, just not at the expense of your investments coming to a halt because of a shortage of isk after your big purchase.
As for how to make money with one, buy low sell high . |

If you need big ships as a diversion in order to safely move your COC Crane around, you're doing something wrong with your Crane. --------

A Freighter saves much time. A Friend and i run lvl4missions and do some mining (when afk) in highsec. We bought a Freighter, cause its much more cost effective to just haule 800.000m¦ once a month than hauling 30.000m¦ every 2 days to your local trade hub. And having 500mil a run in loot/salvage/mins in one run is always a cool feeling.
But making money with a freighter out of courircontracts, seems very unlikely. I offered it many times to haul 700000m¦ for 15mil to jita, but nobody seems to invest that amount of hauling costs. So we use the freighter just to haule our stuff. |

It is possible to make some ISK from hauling courier contracts. Personally I make about 200-300M pr month doing courier contracts with my freighter, but in general it is those people using our services that make the big bucks :)
If you are interested in doing some courier work, let me know, and we can have a chat. Red Frog Freight Service
