Ok, So there is alot of lv3 misson runners in this system. Me and my corp want to BUST in on there misson and do some pew pew. So i grab my scanner ship fitted with recon probe thingo and start scanning.....I find nothing. I can see the targets and there wreaks with my directional scanner but nothing with probes! Is there someway of scanning for ships in space ?
Any help would be great.

Haven't tried in a while but it usd to be easier to find them if you looked for their drones rather than their ships.

If you can move within 4 AU of a missionrunner and have enough time, exploration probes are superior, since they have far more sensor strength. Try those.

I believe drone sig radius' have been reduced, hence harder to find (scan) them. Still doable though.

Someone doing missions without using drones and fitting ECCM:s will be very hard to scan down if he is like 13-14 AU away from closest celestial object (with no paths crossing the mission space). If that isnt the case you will want to.
1.Pinpoint between wich celestials the mission space is
2.Drop a Bookmark within 4 AU
3.Fit Scan Probes to match the type of probes against what sensor type the ship uses.
4.This can take time so he might finish the mission :(

Effective mission busting needs lots of time invested and dedication.
If they are under 4aus from celestial just use a racial scanner probe and you will find them unless you are unlucky.
Usually they are not though. So find a system thats usually populated with mish runners (which you all ready have). Then its about getting BMs close to the mission spots. If its a big system like 80au across the missions can be anywhere in that system in all directions which makes it almost impossible to get enough BMs in. I would choose a system that is as small as possible. Then bring out your fathom probes and scan scan scan. Sooner or later you will get a hit, if not when they are in the mission just when they finished it (and the deadspace deactivates so its like scanning a safe) or warp out close to where the mission was. BM it. Continue doing this. Always bring both probe launchers with you in case you do find someone under 4aus. Also consider doing missions in the system to get good BMs. As time goes you will have more and more BMs far off celestials and eventually you have 700 in your favorite system and you can pinpoint any mission runner in a few min

Another little trick that might help is to spend one day to do missions in that system and bookmark something in everyone of them. This way you will get many nice spots right in the middle of nowhere to launch your probes there.
And of course keep an eye on the size of the system, you will find more if it's a smaller one compared to those with a diameter of over 150 AUs, where you would need an insane amount of probes to cover the system

i think a while back, another tactic i heard was to scan down the deadspace that is their mission as well

Here's what you need to do:
1) blanket the system with bookmarks in the middle of nowhere 2) warp to bookmark, set directional scan at 4AU and scan 3) if mission bears appear drop scan probe, if not, return to step 2 4) after scan probe analysis finishes, check results for ships that look like they might be missioners (ie. Navy Raven) 5) warp to location 6) if a gate appears, you have a missioner
Another key thing to remember is to use the right scan probe for the race of ship you are trying to scan down.

Edited by: Miss CJB on 01/01/2009 09:07:03 another trick, is to get overlaping probes. i generaly dont have any problems getting mission runners with 2 overlaping 10 au probes.
and look out for probed drones. they could be a mission runner, the system map is very usefull for determining this.

I pick them up on on scans all the time. When I scanning down exploration sites, I generally run a couple of scans for ships with my quests. I found a few abandoned ships that way. If I see a ship that's not next to a planet, gate or belt, I'll fly to it to check it out. If I land on a mission gate, I know I've found a mission runner. Personally, I just ignore those, but that's just me.

Mission scanning works just fine, just ask the CNR pilot I killed last night.
As has been said, recon probes are for safespot busting, you want the exploration probes (preferably with the right sensor type). You'll lose some targets due to not being able to get within 4 AU, but it sounds like you're in highsec with plenty of options. Drop gravimetric quest probes on as many planets as you can, and you should find something. -----------

If you are in a busy busy hub system looking to ninja salvage, you could get away with regular recon probes because there is ALOT of ships and drones you can get a warp in on.
If you are looking for a specific target, exploration probes are your best bet. It will be quite difficult to snag somebody in a deadspace with a snoop probe.

Not sure but have been seeing something new at Dead Space entrances, a new structure normally in pairs that oppose scanning. Sorry didn't pay to much attention to the name of it.

Varying the angle of the directional scanner, it's range and your camera's facing you should be able to get a good approximation of where they are. Then warp to an appropriate bookmark and drop a probe. |

Lets say you are within 4 AU of a mission runner. (you see the ship and mission wrecks on scanner)
The mission runner sees you, and your probes, and leave the mission site.
Is it now possible to use plex probes and scan out the mission site, when its empty?

No, as it does not have the exploration pocket signature. You need a player or his drones to be there in order to scan down the missions pocket. |

this. Learn to use the directional scanner, and f10 map. One ship to rule them all, one ship to find them, one ship to jam them all, and in the darkness bind them.

Oh, I have no trouble narrowing any ship down to 5 degrees and even determining his range. My trouble is in knowing which of my 700 bookmarks is in that direction at that range. I'm wondering if you guys have a bookmark naming convention or coordinate system that would help. I mean, the best I can imagine is a bookmark named something like "About 2 au from belt V-1 in the direction kinda between the sun and the FW bunker;" that's fine if I'm scanning my target from belt V-1 but kinda confusing when I have him at 5 degrees from planet IX.
I get bookmarks, and I get the onboard directional scanner. I just don't get how to efficiently relate them to one another.

hit F10 bring up the solar system map.
There is all the BMs as little markers in space, or maybe you gotta activate that as some option? I think they are there as default. So when you narrowed him down to angel and distance, you hit F10, you will be facing same angel in this map as in space. Then just warp to your BM closest to where you think he is One ship to rule them all, one ship to find them, one ship to jam them all, and in the darkness bind them.

Yeah use F10 Ka Jolo.
However i think CCP should forbid missions that are "unscannable" i.e. 12 AU straight upwards with no celestial object on opposite side so i cant bm anything closer than 12 AU.
Either that or give me 20 AU Scan probes. N.B. not recons.
