The API key lets someone acess your skill data among other things.
Only ever give out your limited API, NEVER your full api
The reason you're bing asked is either: A) They wanna chack whats skills you have so your FC knows what to get you to do
B) To make sure you are not an alt of a hostile corp or alliance (aka Spy)
You can find your API key here: http://myeve.eve-online.com/api/default.asp
Agan, dont give out your Full API, only Limited.

Frankly, I get lost every time I try to manually hunt it down as well. There is no direct or obvious path to get to it from My Account or anything. They try to make it as ridiculously clumsy to find as possible.

An API key is what CCP has developed so that third party programmes can access information about a character.
Visit this page. http://myeve.eve-online.com/api/default.asp
Stick with the limited key - it displays skill information, other characters on the account, wallet information. Basically very low level but still useful information. It won't allow anyone to access your ingame account or influence your ingame settings at all.
As this seems like it's your first corporation, they're more than likely requesting the information to check up on things like your skill points, your ISK amount and other characters on the same account (hopefully in that order). If they offer advice on what skills you should get or train up you should do this, you can reset the key after a time period and the ceo/directors shouldn't have a problem with that.
This is a very general overview, if you want a more technical answer I'm sure one can be arranged. If you haven't been told about EVEMON it's one of the best skill planners available and is pretty much considered a must for most serious characters who want to specialise or just manage their time better.

I've been playing for little bit and in the same boat as the OP.
Couple things I would like clarified though. Wallet Information; Is this a line by line breakdown or just a balance statement? Will my ship and its fitting be viewable?
I apologize in advance if these questions seem noobish, but a strong sense of paranoia and skepticism has served me well so far.

Your limited API key will allow access to a list of characters on your account and what skills they have.
The full API key allows read access to additional information such as your wallet transaction and assets.
You can reset your API keys at anytime to revoke access to the API. All API information is read only: giving out your API key will not allow anyone to change anything.

Full API: Line by line. All your possessions and ships are visable. Not sure on fittings.
Limited API: Wallet balance, skills, stats, and (I think) implants. ----------------

Full API gives ALL items that all the chars on that account own. Including ones in containers and fitted to ships. All your market transactions and kill/lossmails are visible too.
Limited API does give implants as well.

really, all any corp needs is your limited API. Its rare if you need to use your full API for anything other then some apps like iCEO for igoogle. |

You cannot find it because you look in the wrong place.
Do not go to My Account. Go to My Character. Select a character (any), and look at the last information box (right before the list of skills). There is your link to the API stuff. |
