Edited by: IronToken on 11/12/2008 18:16:54 I have a quick question for the community. I was just wondering how things work when you have an item equipped that you are not skilled enough to use.
As an example I recently bought a Caldari Navy Caracal which was outfitted with 3 screen reinforcer rigs. I assumed I would not be able to fly it until I had finned the required training for the rigs, but it let me into the ship anyway.
Is this a bug? Or does the game just disable the rigs effects until after I have the required skills. I am currently researching shield rigs now so it will be a moot point, but I was wondering what would happen if people bought ships from other pilots that they were not skilled enough to use on their own fully equipped with T2 items in order to skip the training. Thanks in advance.

Rigs are not like other modules, they cant be offlined. so yes you only need the skills to fit them, after that you only need skills to mitigate any drawback they might have

If it's a bug/exploit then a lot of people are getting banned soon.
It's pretty common practise to have someone equip rigs for you. People even make money offering to do it.

Yes I have been able to. I have done numerous missions since.

But the point was that I don't have the skills to fit them yet I can still use them.

No the point is they are already fitted. the only use those fitting skills have after that is to mitigate the drawbacks.
Ordinarily if u got in a ship with modules that u dont have the skills to use they would go offline. Rigs dont go offline, so you are good to go

Seems like an odd thing to pay for. The skills are pretty easy to train and you'd want them anyways to reduce the penalty.
I am pretty sure I read a while back when rigs were first introduced that this was not considered an exploit. It may not exactly have been intentional, but CCP is fine with it. ----------------------------------------------------

Well I had a chat about this with a GM some time ago and this is the reply.
Hi,
This is in fact intended.
You only need the skill to fit rigs, not to use them.
If you however don't have the skills, you will receive the full negative effects of the rigs.
If you have any further issues, please don't hesitate to contact us again.

You can fit rigs you dont have the skills for if someone fits the rigs then contracts the ship back to you. Dunno if it is an exploit or not, but its a broken mechanic. Another broken mechanic -say ur a carrier pilot and you get podded and lose battleship 5, you can still jump in your carrier and fly about.

Actually doesn't really sound like an exploit, though I'd petition if you're worried about it.
Sounds more like paying someone to spruce up your ship because you can't do it yourself than exploiting something.
Course it also sounds totally unintended. - - - - - - - - - Do not use dotted lines - - - - - - - If you think I'm awesome, say BOOO BOOO!! - Ductoris Neat look what I found - Kreul Hey, my marbles |

Nope it is working as intended. You only need Jury rigging lvl 1 and then the rigs on a ship will work for you, just that you also get the full drawbacks.
However there are plenty of rigs you dont really have to worry about drawbacks.
You won't be able to fit the rigs yourself with Jury rigging lvl 1 but nobody prevents a budy doing it for you or you just buying a rigged ship and use it.

If a way to abuse the current system becomes prevalent and a change is needed in the future, so be it.
I doubt that will happen in this particular case as it gives industrialists something to play with to add value to their products. In fact T3 looks like it is going to take the concept a rather large step further. Time will tell on that one.

Originally by: Killer Gandry just that you also get the full drawbacks
FWIW, the last I tested this (sometime 07), for rigs which effected modules (e.g. Hydraulic Bay Thrusters), the bonuses and penalties are applied when the modules are fitted. For rigs that effect base abilities of the ship (e.g. Cargohold Expanders), the rigs penalties and bonuses are applied when the rigs are.
So for some rigs, you get full drawbacks, for others you don't.
(note, this may have changed in some release or another. I stopped caring when I got those skills to 4).
