Hello,
This should probably be in the Noob forum but I'll post it here as its module related....
I usually run misisons in an Omen but have moved into a Maller. I'm using Heavy (Med) lasers (with Radar M) against Sansha rats and can target and hit at 52KM's (maybe 54 but I'm not at the Eve PC ATM)... Whenever they get into less than 18KM's it gets extremely hard to hit them... the speed they fly at and transversal velocity, etc all affects how successful I am.
I've put on a target painter but I dont think this helps too much.
What modules (and skills?) do I need to be able to successfully hit the rats at closer ranges? I can target them no problems but need to increase their signature radius? Is that right?
Thanks in advance from someone who really should pay more attention to the Maths of it all... Regards,
Jason Brisbane

Change your ammo to shorter range chrystal like multifrequency. Fit a tracking enhancer. Fit a stasis web. Use drones.

Motion prediction will help, as will switching to pulse lasers and fitting a webifier. Switch to a crystal that has a shorter optimal range too, since at least you'll do more damage when you do hit. You may even have trouble hitting cruisers effectively with beam lasers if you have very low skills.
But the Maller is probably the least effective cruiser in the game at hitting frigates, since it lacks slots for assault launchers and lacks a drone bay. Stay with an Omen or move into an Arbitrator.

If the rats are at 18km, order your ship to orbit them at 30km. Your ship will immediately turn 90 degrees to the rats, and will keep heading away from the rats, with the rear end of your ship pointed at the rat as it orbits you.
This can cut transversal down dramatically - even to the extent of getting hits on cruisers at 15km using Large Beam Lasers

Edited by: Aerin Cloudfayr on 11/12/2008 09:31:24 If you intend on sticking to the Maller, your best bet is to fit Heavy Medium Pulses, and combine these with an Afterburner+Web+Tracking Computer or Target Painter setup in your mids. Use Standard Crystals for tanking and saving your cap, and switch to Mutifrequency when you need to do a fast takedown.
The idea is that you'll need to afterburn to within 10kms, Paint and web them, then shoot 'em up them at your optimal range. Essentially if you can tank the damage, then range shouldn't need to be a concern. So you're better off getting up close and punching them in the nose.
So in short;
Heavy Pulse lasers w/Standard M, Multifrequency M. Afterburner, Web, Tracking Comp (Tracking speed) or a Target Painter Get up close and fist-punch them in the face :P
Range is nice to have, but if you can't keep that range - gogogadget Pulse. Unless you can get into the practice of sniping off the frigates before they close in, ofc.

Thanks All.
Playing last night I changed my setup. Now with several RCU's I've boosted my Powergrid to fit a salvager, 5 heavy lasers, AB, Target Painter and Cap Booster and in the lows (2xRCU's and a PCU) and a DCII and Small armour rep.
I plan on dropping the target painter for a tracking comp but I need to get Gunnery to 5 and Trajectory Analysis (I started as an Indy character so I'm developing the Gunnery skills now!)
The Maller doesnt have a drone bay so my drones I had in the Omen cant be used ( ). But its better in every other way so I'll stick with it.
I like the option of being able to pop rats at 50KM's. What option would be better 2 Multifrequencies and 3 Radar's or 3 Multi's and 2 Radar's? Or should I simply go for 5 Multi's for close in combat (5-25KM's) and forget about long range popping?
NOTE: This will be for missions so webbing rats is useless - they seemingly ignore webbers and with 20+ rats, targetting one rat is useless anyway!
Actually 4 Multi's and 1 Radar would still allow me to target the long range rats and pop them (rather slowly) whilst still targetting the close up rats that tend to spin around the warp in sites.... Correct?

Fire all your guns at one target at a time - it will explode faster, and stop doing you damage quicker. (It also cannot repair when it's dead).
Fire the same range ammo, all at that same target - load radio when it's at range, and drop down to shorter range crystals as they close. Usually I kill everything near to me first on the basis that that's what will be doing the most damage, and also warp scrambling.
And a web does help - a close in target you'll be able to maneuver away from to make it an easier target, and by slowing it down means all of your guns hit it much better than they will with a single tracking computer - of course the tradeoff is that the webs have a fairly short range.

Carry several ranges of crystals, use the same lasers and group them. Try to cut down on powergrid mods and downgrade your guns to focused medium (never quad light), so you can focus on better tracking / better tank / better gank.
