Ok so I just recently got myself a Tristan because I think it looks sweet and I saved up my money like a good newbie miner should, hoping to get some low level combat action in this puppy, and well i'm reading posts about equiping a trist as best i can without a forum search feature (gg ccp ) and i'm wondering why people say to equip a 10MN AB on a frigate when 10MN is supposed to be for cruiser class ships? Am I missing something? There has to be a drawback to using something that has Made for Cruisers in the description on a frigate, no?
If anyone can explain this to me I'd really appreciate it.
Also while i'm making my first post I might aswell get all my newbie Qs out of the way and ask for any advice on how to go about equiping a frigate for low level hunting and where/how to do that. Also, I figure mining is my best bet for making a nice nest egg, so if you can offer some advice on the best ship and gear for mining and some good spots I would Really appreciate that too.
I know I'm asking a lot so maybe if you just have an informative site to share with me or can point me in the right direction to some answers to these questions I'd be forever in your debt. Thanks in advance!

A 10MN AB on a frigate will give a much greater speedboast than the "correct" size will. That is ofcours the pro of this "oversizing". The con is that it takes a lot more powergrid to fit a 10MN AB than a 1MN AB so most frigates (if not all) have to use micor aux powercore in lowslots to be able to fit a 10MN AB. And that still leaves litle powergrid to fit anything else of use on the ship.
I use "oversizing" my self, but only for traveling and transportation missions. For NPC-combat I wouldn't recomend it... But I'm no expert in combat...

No way :D
A 10mn costs 40mw,and the Interceptors are the few frigs who can handle that and still fit more stuff; 100mw would be impossible.
But why would you want to? 10mw on a frig can get you about 2500m/s, quicker than even missiles :)

what would be a good setup for me if i want to put a 10MN AB on a tristan?
i hear two hybrid neutron blasters (light i'm guessing?) but im wondering what else to put in the other 2 hi slots, and i have no idea what else to put int he med/lows to make this work. I want to have a fast frig that can stay ahead of missiles and have something to counter web or warp scramblers. I'm not sure if its possible but if someone has a nice newbie config i'd like to hear about it

I'm still a newb and there aren't many ships who can handle a 10mw AB, let alone use other stuff with it. Unless we're talking Interceptors which would pretty much mean you're not a newb (takes a lot of high skills). I myself use a Vigil fitted with 2x 1mn ABs and 2x Overdrive for scouting & courier purposes. Can get up to a good 750m/s, not enough to actually be quicker than missiles, but if you stay long-range, their fuel runs out before they get to you (orbit opponents at about 30 miles and you're quite safe from missiles).

Originally by: Phoenicia ... but if you stay long-range, their fuel runs out before they get to you (orbit opponents at about 30 miles and you're quite safe from missiles).
only rockets and light missiles, and even then you're not completely safe from light missiles, and definitely not from heavy or cruise missiles... ------------------------------------------------

From 30, you should be completely safe from lights, shich have a 25 second timer and travel 1000km/s. Thus, outside 25 km, you shouldn't be touchable by light missiles --------------
Your 720mm Howitzer Artillery I perfectly strikes Guristas Spy, wrecking for 411.2 damage. |

not nessecarily so, with missile launcher operations skill high enough, it'll go further, plus tech II light missiles go further as well.... ------------------------------------------------

Getting engineering to lvl V will help increase the grid as well.
As for mining, i'd go with the Gallente Imicus. It's 250 m3 drone bay will keep you safe from rats in .7 and even down to .5 space. Get mining to 4 and you can use Miner IIs or at least 1 MinerII and 1 MinerI (may need high electronics skill and a Co-Processor or 2).

Acolytes, Hammerheads etc.
Pick the one that deals the damage that the rats in your system are weak to, e.g. Guristas don't like Kinetic Damage, so pick the drones that primarily deal out Kinetic damage to deal with Guristas.

Edited by: Jonnie on 15/07/2004 11:59:19 how effective are combat drones exactly? are they a match for anyone in pvp? whats their usefulness outside .7 and above security sectors? i'm debating wether or not i want to train up drone skills. I already have level 5 drone, rank 1, and i'm wondering if i should get drone interfacing. And if i do decide to make drones a big part of my career what skills/equipment would i use to maximize their effectiveness?
Again thank you very much for being so helpful to everyone who responded, I really appreciate it. This has been the most daunting multiplayer learning experience i've ever been through, right next to playing ultima online for the first time when i'd just turned 12 (talk about a 'learning' experience) and being thrown into the most bizarre, new, frighteningly confusing online world i'd ever been exposed to. This has been a most interesting and exhilirating first few weeks that i haven't felt playing a game in a long time.

I would definately recommend getting the interfacing and heavy drone skills. Interfacing won't help w/ an Imicus, but when you move up to a cruiser you will be able to carry lots of them. You can always use lots of mining drones too, which will be especially sweet if the new classes of mining drones become available someday.
For weak rats like those in .7 systems, try 2 mediums and 1 light. That should protect you fine.
I don't do a lot of PVP, but I know heavy drones are currently very effective against frigates, although they can be countered by smartbombs. And new changes coming may make them less effective. |
