I read somewhere that if, while scanning plexes, you scan with two types of probes, it will only use the strength of one of them. If I have a quest probe and a sift probe going, for example, even the area inside the Sift's radius will only scan with the strength of a quest probe.
Any truth to this?

Absolutely true. It uses the probe strength of the weaker. I have never gotten a result when I mixed probes. ______________________________________________________ Isn't it enough to know that I ruined a pony making a gift for you? |

Yeah, after some testing this definitely happens. Had quests going with sifts and got nothing after 10 mins. Using sifts only, I was able to get four sites with ONE scan each.

any ideas whats the exact mechanics here ? as in does that mean the lowest strength used where probe sphere intersect ? or everywhere in the system provided that you have at least 1 probe of lower strenght than the rest of probes ?

I tried some experiments and it seems to be true. I mixed quests and sifts and compared to another character who was using only sifts. The character using only sifts found sites much faster.

It's not based on where the probes are. If you're scanning with them at once, it fails.
You can have quest probes OUT while scanning with sifts, just don't scan with them.

It seems that in rare conditions if you launch the sift and do a combined scan that this condition persists even if your quests timeout or are destroyed.
Took me 6 (!!!) sifts to trace down a radar site whilst having a virtue set in with max exploration skills (only lacking the +5% strength hardwire), in the end i was beaten to the plex (cosmos radar) and the funny thing was i didnt even have the site down myself (competitors had the site on their first sift).

Scans with different combinations of probe strengths are fubar, and is properly one of the reasons many people simple give up on exploration.
You can have different types of probes out at any given time, but only include probes of the same strength in the scan process. If you do not, all space covered by all probes will be scanned with the strength of the lowest probe included in your scan.
