I'm planning on training for a freighter and wondering if there's any meaningful difference between them. If they're functionally the same, what indy V would be of most benefit to me? |

Gallente, the iteron 5 is just so much bigger than any other hauler (except maybe the orca now).
Other than that, caldari is the biggest freighter and minmatar is the fastest if you want to auto with it. |

Depends what's most important. The transport ships, the freighter, or the T1 industrial.
Caldari freighter is the biggest, Minmatar freighters are the fastest. The difference between the freighterse is pretty negligable though - they're all really big, and really slow.
Gallente is the only race that gets a tier 5 industrial. So if it's just T1 haulers you're interested in, go Gallente.
Otherwise, there's the transport ships, and you may wish to adjust you preference based on which transport ship you want to fly. They each have their pros and cons, depending on whether you prefer deep space transports (tanky with more cargo, and can expand up a _lot_) or blockade runners (small, but fast and covert cloaking).

Go with gallente, the itty V outperforms all other races industrials by a wide margin, and even if you're planning on using freighters/tech II haulers, it's always convenient to have an itty V pilot handy for when stuff needs a movin |

I'd say Amarr.
Best transports, transport similiar to iteron 5 in size(like 47 vs 49km3), decent freighter. Simply best allround. Parrots, commence!

My alt has Gallente and Minmatar industrials at V.
Iteron 5 is the biggest T1 indy and the Obelisk is the cheapest freighter (not because it costs less to make, but because there's so many of 'em on the market due to all the Itty V pilots).
The Caldari freighter is the biggest. All freighters are slower than frozen molasses so the Charon (Minnie freighter) being fast isn't anything to get excited about. It's like saying one snail is faster than another :P.
From my own experience I've found the Gallente transports to be somewhat lacking compared to their Minnie counterparts - the Prowler is ridiculously fast (aligns a tad slower than an interceptor) and the Mastodon can sport a BS-class tank, best tank of any of the DSTs, I believe. Even when fitted with just a midslot tank of extenders and invuln fields it can still get a respectable (and virtually suicide-proof) 42.5K EHP, making it my #1 choice for high-value empire hauling. |

amaarr good all round, nice transports industrails are easy to train for and fastest (impel is fastest t1 hauler by far) also they have decent freighters
gallente have best t1 haulers and decent freighters and transports
Caldari transports and haulers aren't that great (they can tank nicely) but they have the best freighters.
minmatar pretty much suck all round, cept maybe prowler being used for cov ops gangs (not sure how well it will work though).

This. There really needs to be proper battle haulers, ie armed merchantmen. Give me a Mammoth that's 6/6/5 with weapon slots and fittings now.

While I think it'd be kind of neat to have transports that are truly viable in a fight (the battlebadger and whatnot works only in very odd scenarios as far as I can tell).
The problem comes in balance. Afterall, to be a viable platform for combat, it would abo****ely need to have the firepower of a heavily gunned T1 frigate (I.E 3 - 4 weapon slots). Since the average threat to an industrial ship these days consists of frigates (in lowsec and nullsec primarily) or cruisers (in high sec where you'll need the firepower to take down the ship before being murdered by concord) it would obviously need the defenses of a sturdy cruiser. To avoid having the ship become a true frontline vessel, it would obviously need to have a combination of absolutely terrible agility (say battlecruiser level) but a relatively high top speed (afterall, merchantmen class ships (from the era of sail) move at a good clip in a straight line but maneuver poorly). If one can somehow balance all those requirements where the new armed merchantman class ship has the the ability to provide a decent fight to the average cruiser but enough downsides that it doesn't become a PVP mainstay, all while having enough cargo capacity to actually be useful as a hauler i'd be all for such a class of ships. If not then why bother? |

Tch, the mammoth does look good, but the freighter...
The freighter looks like a jawa sandcrawler!
Anytime I see a killmail for one I expect to see half a dozen droids and a few funny-looking midgets in brown robes with glowing eyes listed on it.
For a more constructive set of comments: The bestower is a decent low-skill hauler, the amarr transports are some of the best and, unless cargo capacity and lows have changed, their deep space transport has comparable cargo capacity to the iteron 5's, and the providence is the absolute best-looking freighter of them all with it's "hey look, I'm a mobile city" thing going on. The iteron 5, however, is a nice ship and is, in some respects, the equal of some transport ships. The gallente freighter, however, looks like a cybernetic wasp's nest and I'm not sure I could bear to undock in it. ____________________

Sums it up pretty nicely!
However, you could just bring the other transports into line with the battlebadger. When i don't forget ammo, my battlebadger has successfully been capable of destroying a catalyst and cormorant, and no frigate has caused me ANY issues whatsoever. Ontop of which SOME cruisers, have had issues with its tank, but most will break its back without to much effort.

While you're training your Industrial skill, start off with a Bestower (Amarr Industrial 1) - it's the largest cargo hold you'll get for the few hours of training required to get into it.
After that, the Iteron V (requires Gallente Industrial 5) is the largest Industrial.
After that, the Charon (Caldari Freighter) is the largest freighter. The Caldari are obviously margin traders.

I don't particularly care for the Amarr industrials because you have to choose between decent cargo (Cargo Expander IIs), fitting for tank, and fitting for speed. The other industrials get more of their cargo capacity for "free" without using module slots. They can fit for tank AND speed and still end up with more cargo space.
You can also borrow an Iteron from almost anyone. But is a random corpmate likely to have an Impel lying around?
Something else to consider is which jump fuel you'll want to use for your jump freighter, should you train for one. It's much nicer if you can mine for the fuel locally.

What this man says! With a freighter, if you have the money for a cheap one you can save a little bit more for an expensive one (100 mill more or so?) surely the primary thing that matters is cargo capacity.
Speed ... meh, I've never slowboated my freighter anywhere as I want to get my goods from A to B before I die! |

Nonsense. Minmatar transport ships are arguably the best of the lot. Prowler is by far the fastest, and thus best for its role (hard to catch). Mastodon has the best combo of tank and cargo capacity, making it (imho) best for the main use of DSTs: lowsec hauling with occasional small gate camps in the way.

AFAIK Charon is a caldari freighter, minmatar freighter is Fenrir.
OP: as stated before you must choose ship you wish to fly - there too many to choose: t1 indy with biggest cargohold, best blockade runner, best deep space transport or freighter. I wouldn't care which freighter unless you are absolutely sure what you need (cargo or speed). I have chosen 2 years ago caldari and it was a bad decision. I will never have enough isk to fly a freighter (fly means also loose). Mostly i use badger mkII although i can fly trasport ships too. I would choose other races minmatar, amarr or gallente - as i fly t1 industrials occasionally i would choose minmatar mastodon (although iteron V is really bigger).
Edit: I also should train reading comprehension :) Choose freighter wiselly according your needs. If you are going to travel far with huge volume then choose charon. If you are going often far away while partially afk and volume is not so important (all freighters can carry lots of goods) then train for fenrir as it will get to gate from 15km a little bit faster.

If I remember correctly it is a battleship. From the beginning (early/ beta) the mammoth model was used for the minmatar tier 1 BS and the typhoon model was used for the industrial. But because of player feedback they got switched as people found the typhoon model to be more battleship like. |

Caldari hands down if you're training for a Freighter.
Minmatar looks like a rusted pile of random junk and it's the smallest freighter. Gallente one looks like... a weird egg with things poking from the sides. It's slow on align too and smaller than charon Amarr looks great Caldari looks great but it's bigger AND aligns faster than Amarr one.
Badgerbadger sucks for hauling but Bustard gets good enough cargo. Crane is a fine blockade runner, although you will have to sacrifice one lowslot for a Power diag.

Gallente.
Their freighter is ok, with proper skills can still stretch out the needed 900k for khm ... certain items. Their T1 hauler is best if you are going to get industrial 5 anyway somewhere and their trasport ships offer also good balance. Viator is one of the best blocade runners by it's slot layout and base stats and occator is also pretty ok - altho for afk travel nowdays minny or caldary might be slightly better bcos they get shield extender bonuses and occator has armor hp bonus.
That is unless you are after something specific in what case just go for whatever is better in that particular class you are aiming at. |

All freighters can carry roughly 3/4 million m3 of cargo, base hold size. None can have any fittings whatsoever, neither modules nor rigs, so the only increase is the standard +5% cargo per level of racial freighter skill. The Caldari freighter (Charon) is the largest with 780,000 m3 base size. If you go all the way to Caldari Freighter V that'll get you 975,000 m3 of cargo space. The Minmatar Fenrir is the smallest at 720,000 m3 base (900,000 m3 with max skill). While that is 75,000 m3 of cargo, it's a comparatively small difference. Is that significant to you?
If it's not, then I recommend Gallente if you're only interested in the Industrial as a secondary consideration. The Iteron V is the best Industrial by a long shot, as it has both the largest base cargo hold and the most low slots of any of them.
If you're also figuring in the Blockade Runners and Deep Space Transports then the equation changes, and others have already discussed the pros and cons of them. |
