I've had my main character for several months and have recently ventured into 0.3 space. My plan was to mine and go ratting to make more ISK, but instead I am constantly being targeted by pirates ( both solo and gangs).
My question is how can I defend against them? Do they have a common weakness? Are there any modules I should fit apart from the Warp one (the one that lets you warp when you're being warp-jammed)
Thx for any advise |

best way to defend against pirates is to never warp to 0 keep an eye on local, look for pirates, keep your scanner open to see whats hunting you and instantly SS the moment someone warps into your belt then keep moving to different SS spots...also rat in lowsec in a frig, nothing there that needs more than that to take down, also increases your chances to run when you need to. |

Edited by: Rajere on 20/11/2008 20:30:47 The first step is recognizing that you are the victim because you are weak/inexperienced/etc. The second step is recognizing that in spite of these disadvantages and inexperience, that there are things that *you* can do differently to change the outcome of things that happen to you in game when dealing with these pirates or anyone else really. The third step is seeking out those wiser & more experienced players for guidance and advice on what *you* can do to improve *your* game experience.
These are the steps which you have accomplished already, up until step 3. No one who reads or posts on the forums knows much about anything related to eve really, they're all either newbies themselves or forum trolls. My advice to you is, if you wish to learn about pvp or atleast learn to defend yourself from pirates, is for you to seek out a pirate corp local to your corner of lowsec and join them. A thousand teachers can teach you a thousand lessons and you'll still learn less than you would by actually experiencing it yourself one time in game. You can learn more about eve pvp from a small pirate corp in low sec than you'll ever learn from a big 0.0 blob alliance, because you will never learn anything if you are never personally challenged during pvp. in 6 weeks you'll be able to run circles around a 0.0 only pvper who's been x'ing up for blob warfare every night for the last 6 months. When you do lose an engagement you will know that it was due to something that you did wrong which will teach you what to do better next time so you can avoid the same outcome next time around; all while the blobber will still be blaming "lag" for each and every one of his mistakes. -------------------------- NOTR How to Fail at Eve

Find the calmest places of low-sec; there are places where you will be able to go about your business without seeing anyone in local for half a hour to a hour easily. Use the map.

1) Get friends. The key to low sec, especially if you're a semi-carebear / carebear with teeth type character is to join up with a bunch of similar ppl, ideally ones already established in a low sec mission running area. They will help you (and you'll help them) get out of trouble. Different groups have different methods for this, but long term, you want to kick anyone not friendly out of the area you live in.
If you intend to go solo nomad, best advice is to get someone to scout you into 0.0, where the ratting is much better. Don't go dronelands unless you have a way / friends to help you to get the drone minerals out. Otherwise you can go for days without seeing someone
Alternatively, sign up with one of the many renter alliances / corps already out in 0.0. You shouldn't be expected to pvp much or even at all, and if you're lucky, you'll get access to intel channels to boot. Just remember, the renter alliance is only as strong as the alliance who owns it (landlord alliance) and don't move all your worldly posessions out to 0.0 or you could be losing them next war or when landlord alliance tire of their renters
1a) Learn how to survive in low sec / 0.0. Always have local open in a separate window, treat anyone you don't know as hostile until proven otherwise, and if there are hostiles in system, don't rat, but get safe (i.e. dock up, cloak or constantly move between different safe spots (bookmarks that you create mid warp and so can't be warped to by enemies (unless they have probes, hence to keep moving and constantly make new spots)). This is why 0.0 is better as rats are better and there are invariably less ppl, so less wasted time being safe
2) Drop any pretences about mining. It is less profitable (the ores are just plain worth less) vs. high sec until you get to the relatively few 0.0 systems where the really good ores are (and those systems are usually protected / no go, logistics aside).
3) Don't mix fits. Either you're there for pvp and some ratting on the side when no one is around, or you're there to rat and run like a screaming girl when hostiles turn up. PvE ships don't make for good pvp ships and vice versa. If you go for the ratting and running strategy, train cloak asap (you can't be probed when cloaked. The only way to decloak you is to get within 2000m of you with a drone or ship (or drone/ship get in range of you). So also don't cloak in a belt or near a gate or where someone can see you but warp to a safespot first, then cloak). Sure it is a "lame tactic" as every pvper will tell you, but it works
_______ People like that don't have friends just temporary common interests.

Some of the best advice possible if it goes wrong for you.
You will make enemies quickly if you smack in local, and if mining/ratting in low sec is a regular activity for you, then that could turn out to be a costly mistake.
As others have said, Empire or 0.0, Low Sec is Pirates playground - anything goes. |

The best way is not to get caught in the first place, unless you REALLY know what you're doing, you're in control of the situation and you have the SP/ship/fitting/experience then fighting is a good option.
Till then, avoid problems alltogether; keep checking local, make safespots, don't trust anyone, keep checking local, run your scanner, be aligned, keep checking local, don't trust anyone. (yes I know I stated some several times).
If it gets to a point where they're right on top of you and have you scrambled, you already made SO many mistakes you deserve what's coming tbh. Be alert, be agile and be prepared.

There are two things that are your primary tools against being preyed upon:
Vigiliance 1. Always keep an eye on local. 2. Always keep an eye on the overview 3. Your standard overview should always be one designed to warn you from enemy ships, not one focused on finding the location of various planets or asteroids. I've never been attacked by a Veldspar asteroid.
2. Paranoia. 1. In EVE there is no such thing as "A strange is just a friend you haven't met yet". It's more like "A stranger is just an enemy you haven't met yet and therefor more dangerous as you don't know his habits". 2. Your first action on entering a system should be getting away from the gate and getting yourself a quick&dirty safespot. 3. Unless you're docked, inside a POS shield or cloaked and certain that nobody managed to pin down where you cloaked (keep moving towards emptiness after you've cloaked) you keep moving from safespot to safespot (creating safespots as you go). 3. If there are others in the system. Keep scanning and don't stay still. 4. Never jump to a gate without scanning it first from a nearby stellar object or (preferably) a nearby safespot. 5. Never jump to an obvious location without scanning it first. 6. Never jump to a moon without scanning it first for Control Towers (or if you have an active covert ops cloak). 7. If you don't see anything on the scanner, assume that they're cloaked. 8. If he's blue it doesn't mean that he's not going to betray or attack you. It's just a bit less likely. 9. Everyone has ulterior motives: a) If it sounds too good to be true, assume it's too good to be true. b) If it doesn't sound too good to be true it's probably still too good to be true. c) If someone says that something is "inevitable" he's most likely lying. d) In fact. Don't trust anything anyone says. It's in their interest to lie to you, and the way to get ahead is to figure out how their lies might be to your gain. 10. If it looks like bait you should assume that it is bait (which doesn't always mean that you shouldn't take it. A mousetrap is not a problem if you're an elephant). 11. If it doesn't look like it's bait it might still be bait. ______________________________________________ -My respect can not be won, only lost. It's given freely and only grudgingly withdrawn. |

How to beat pirates, in two easy steps:
1) STAY ALIGNED AT FULL SPEED. If you are aligned, you can instantly warp out as soon as you see a threat.
2) WATCH LOCAL AND THE SCANNER. You should spot the pirate and be safely docked in station long before they ever arrive at your belt/mission.
Really, that's all there is to it. Don't plan on winning a fight, plan on avoiding the fight entirely. If a pirate is engaging you, it's because he's sure he can win. And he's probably right, so at that point you've already lost your ship. The solution is to be extremely paranoid, and run away if you even suspect a threat. ----------- Blaster sig removed for now, pending those "changes we've been working on all day". CCP, don't screw this up.

Mining/Ratting in anything less than highsec works like this:
Keep local and bookmarks open. Stare at local constantly. If you see a person in local that does not have a blue or green thing next to their name, you right click one of your safespots and hit 'warp to 0' within two seconds of seeing the neutral/hostile.
You can warp between safespots or cloak, or alternately just dock in a station instead of going to a bookmark if there is a station in system.
If you do this, it is not possible for pirates to kill you while mining or ratting, ever.
I can't guarantee that this is efficient though. A lot of sub highsec systems always have people in them, a lot have people constantly passing through. You have to find a good one.
Better yet, just avoid lowsec, there's no reason to be there if you're not looking for pvp. If you are, follow the above advice, use the scanner, and make an exception to running away if you're up against a single target in a ship you can concievably beat.

Most of what he said is trash.
You learn every time you die. No one wins and thinks, what did I do wrong there, you only evaluate your performance when you lose.
He is right about one thing though, try joining a small pirate corp around your area. To beat pirates you could learn how they operate first.

Two options:
1) Watch local, and align as soon as someone enters. You may leave your mining spot and lose some ore, but better lost ore than a lost ship.
2) Align one direction until you're moving out of range, then align to something 180* behind you. Repeat. ----------- Blaster sig removed for now, pending those "changes we've been working on all day". CCP, don't screw this up.
