Another move away from the EVE that I love. : (
More than 750 Fanfest 2008 attendees were treated to three days straight of non-stop breaking news and new features for EVE Online. The Quantum Rise presentation was given to a packed house, a Walking in Stations hands-on demo was available, and multiple speakers detailed what's in store for the Summer Expansion - new effects, game play features, and improved AI. Want more? CCP announced a partnership with Atari to bring EVE back to retail shelves (adding a new distribution option to CCP's successful digital distribution system). In the Summer Expansion, players can look forward to unstable wormholes, epic mission arcs, and a revamped new player experience. STILL want more? Then top that off with customizable Tech 3 ships! The biggest news? It's not coming in the summer. The next EVE Expansion will be delivered on March 10! More news and links to coverage can be found on the EVE-O Boards |

I dont know what his complaint is. There has been talk that Ambulation will not be a "Free" upgrade and thats why we'll see the boxed unit go back out. Until this product goes on the shelves and we find out if upgrades are going to cease being free then there's little reason to complain. |

Umm .. I might sound as an unusually pessimistic guy voicing this .. but I am a little nervous about this partnership.
I bought some games from Atari some while ago and have experienced their products in a VERY BAD WAY .. basically the games were cool and all that .. nice graphics .. but the gameplay is horrible .. just horrible. ( I steer clear of Atari games now, I dont buy their product as I dont want to pay for crap )
I'll give 3 examples .. ( there are more, if you care to look ).
When Neverwinter nights 2 was released it was preforming very badly .. crashing .. lagging ..stuttering .. basically a memory leak or something that caused the game to slow down and die.
The same thing was happening with the game Witcher .. which came out later .. and I was wery excited .. but when I got it and tried it .. ( hot from the box ) .. it was full of annoying bugs and unlpayable .. the game Froze up repeadedly and you could not be fast enough to save your progress .. some weeks later they introdiced a hotfix and that helped somewhat.
Gothic 3 .. that game just made me cry .. it was worse than the other two above combined .. memory leak .. hiccups .. crashes were frequent .. I threw it away after the first day. ( and I had high hopes for that game when it came out, I was crushed )
But my point is, in all of these examples above .. Atari has been releasing an unfinished product, I would dare to call it a Alfa-release version of the game .. and then introducing patches and fixes when people have already bought the product.
I mean shouldnt the company release games that can be played immediately out of the box without crashing ?! Maybe some time later, they patched those games up .. I dont know .. and that shouldn't matter )
Beware CCP .. PLEASE DON'T BE influenced by this terrible and horrible behaviour by Atari .. I dont want to see EvE or your next games drop dead on release, like has been the case with Atari of late !!

Over the last few years, Atari has been gaining a highly negative reputation among gamers. Many good games have been totally ruined by Atari's faceless corporate style of management, and their non-existent tech support.
The last Atari game I purchased was Master of Orion 3, which was a perfect example. The Master of Orion series was a legendary game franchise permanently destroyed through a typical Atari cycle of cutting half the good features in development to save money, releasing a barely-completed game that plays as if it's still in beta, posting a few half-baked patches that don't really fix much of anything, then quietly moving the game to the discount bin and forgetting it ever existed.
Yes, I'm bitter...but for good reason. Atari really does suck. I hope that CCP is only going to Atari for simple distribution on store shelves. If you let Atari do anything in regards to development or tech support, EVE will be doomed. ----------------------------------- You will be assimilated...bunghole! |

I watched and listened to all the EVE Fanfest videos and there was a round table where Hillmar and one other said candidly that A) you do not have to buy the box because B) Every expansion is free in EvE
SO why try to throw cold water on them entering the boxed PC marketplace..Hell I'll buy a box and won't think twice (seeing as I still have the original Simon and Schuster box stuffed somewhere in my old games box in a closet.)
Celebrate the fact that Atari is willing to embark on the venture to box the game. Not only that, you think the Guys/Gals at CCP who love this game so much DIDN'T learn from SImon and Schuster? publisher -vs- distributor.... Give me a break

Would be nice to see if CCP intends, to only use Atari as a distribution/marketing medium, or if they allow Atari to mess up the Game codes and make the EvE I like into a steaming slag.

It would be interesting in what way ATARI would interfere with EVE Online's underlying program code (if it's that you mean by "Game codes").
Atari is going to distribute a boxed version of the game, you can't seriously mean that would effect the downloadable client in any way at all.

Edited by: Shalisha Brutel on 24/11/2008 15:22:01 Err yes that's what I meant ( the actual program .. the EvE code ).. not the Game Codes ( as in GTC ).
We don't know yet which kind of "Partnership" this is.
Will ATARI help with programming future expansion/patches, with its own programmers ( in which case EvE will be totally ruined ), or in other fields which to not affect the actual game .. only the presentation / marketing.

I'm playing Gothic 3 and have had no real problems. Where-as my new vid cards bios was giving me problems with Eve, Gothic played very stable for me.

The only issue I had with Atari was over DRM with the NWN series, otherwise I had no problems. If the new expansion will be free (truly awesome if it is), then there would be no reason to have drm hell. We see how it goes. I'd honestly just like to see eve time cards in stores.

At this moment in time (post-QR release, post QR 1.0.1 patch) I think CCP might want to concentrate on the product that is generating recurring monthly revenue, rather than diverting resources to a tired idea whose 15 minutes of fame have passed.

I feel fairly confident that CCP will not outsource any code bashing to Atari.

the deal with Atari is very simple, they put it on a disk and into the shelves (plus some nice advertisement material) that's it.
The expansion and the full client will be free to download like always.
The boxed set is basically just a 60 day GTC in a box (plus disk and more). The only difference old players will see are more new players - NOBODY IS REQUIRED TO BUY THE BOX, its just a nice to have maybe.

Well I must say that I'm not as pessimistic about this "partnership" when All ATARI does is, put this into the box and advertise this.
But Atari has got a bad name in the gaming industry lately, and it is no wonder that some people, I would say many people, are concerned about this turn of events. And if they are not allowed close to the internal Code of EvE, as ccp has pointed out, things are not as bleak.
Thanks for clearing up this point.

Digital distro FTW.. Nurture your partnership with Valve and make the updates on steam better. Talk to stardock and get eve on Impulse as well. Game stores are the way of the past! ZOMG Communism! |

I second Mikhales post. Digital distribution is the best way to go, i HATE having to drive to the store. Impulse is good, and i play ALL my games thru steam. I have been using steam for years and was excited to see it finally appear on there.
Box sets might get you more subs, but im telling you, steam is the way to go.

Please not only check, but make sure it is true. We in Russia had pretty bad experience already with this way of EVE distribution. You know, some people tend to have something material to exhibit their fascinations. I myself has a nice galactic map from WC:Prophecy box pinned on my wall (it also serves good in room decoration, yeah!). And purchasing EVE box and then realize that card supplied with it only good for creation of new account was... sad, to say the least. -- Thanks CCP for cu |
