Well, so I got my caldari standing to 0.5 and joined the militia today.
I fit a cheapo frigate (slowboat plated rocket kestrel, with 2 webbers and a scram) that I can afford to lose, and moved to the frontiers.
There were some fleets being assembled in militia chat, but I wanted to solo (or join a small gang if possible, not a fleet. So I moved into gallente space...
move into a system, make a safe spot, and start warping to planets to scan out complexes. Had to scan all planets in 3 systems before I found anything (there was a large compound with no gate, but that was no use for me).
So finally I find one frigate-capped complex, and warp there. There are all of 3 people in local, and none is in gallente militia. I wait at the gate for a while, hoping for some enemy to warp in so I can attack them, but of course no one is in system so nobody comes in. So I decide, what the hell, let's see if I can capture the complex. And I go in.
And end up dying to the NPCs... lame I know, but this fit sucks for PVE (my old PVE kestrel could have handled it just by keeping them at range). It seems that a PVP fit frigate will have some trouble capturing FW complexes solo even if there is no-one from opposing militia.
So... any advice? should I find a fit that also works for PVE? should I just be patient and wait for some gallente to show up? should I join one of the blobs that assemble in nourvoukalen? any other options to have a chance to get some 1vs1 or small gang frigate action?

When solo ... Stick to capturing plexes in caldari sov systems (until you get the swing of things) ... ie. when a caldari system is contested ... uncontest it by capturing plexes.
NPCs will be on your side this way .. they wont shoot you BUT will attack neutrals and enemy FW members.
Thank-You,

Ok, I'll try that. Will I be seeing some enemies this way?.. I really don't care much about the plexes, I'm just doing this to get started with some PVP...

Plated and plexes dont really combine. For solo captures u need permatank and some manual flying from time to time (6 elite ships wave is scary, and happens more often id like it to). Now the real problem is to survive with that fit when some1 decided to trash u Use ur imagination, ok? (tm) Obviously if ure for some players - fly buffers. P.S. Fit a scavenger Find a plex (the bigger the better) Solo capture it ... PROFIT. And some say that FW is money sink.... |

Also, if you right-click and then show info on the beacon in your overview, you can get a rough idea of difficulty of the plex by looking at what ships can enter it.
Long-range fits can generally plex and pvp in the same fit so long as you outrange the rats or can permatank their damage - for minor plexes (T1 frigs and destroyers only) it's usually pretty easy actually since hardly anything in them can shoot past 20 kms. |

Been in FW for a month, done some plexing.
Intys should be viable for speed-tanking plexes and PvP. At least they were before the patch. I solo minors in active tanked Kestrel with no tackling (and PvP) ability.
Small gang plex fleets can be very good for PvP. Depends of the FCs aggressiveness. Damar Rocarion's plex fleets, for example, are good for PvP. Most Caldari plex fleets assemble in Black Rise not Nourvukaiken. As you can scan up the plexes, make safespots and PvP you are very welcome.
Some systems are more active than others. There is always some action in Nennamaila. Hopefully its reconquest yesterday by Damar's fleet will not change it.
You can deduce the size of a plex from their signature. .5 under major .5 - 1.2 med over 1.2 minor If you cannot capture the plex, it is better not to open it but to announce its presence in the channel.
Hope to fly with you in a plex fleet soon.

By scavenger I assume you mean salvager?
Ratting in FW plexes sounds like it could be fun, but right now I'm more interested in getting some PVP action. |

Yeah, this was a frigate-capped plex.. but I got killed anyways ;-)

Yeah, I do have a good PVE fit for my kestrel with standard launchers (done lvl2 missions without ever dying) but the dps is not so great compared to short range fits, and I have no powergrid for a proper (oversized) buffer tank, while active shield tank uses too many slots and leaves no room for tackle. |

can't afford to buy an Inti at the moment, let alone risk it in PVP-land.

Yeah speed tank the plexes, don't try to active tank them because the rats do omgdps. Always bring an armor repper in your cargohold.
If you're looking to pvp, try camping the warp-in point for a plex. A destroyer camping the warp in beacon at a minor plex will nom-nom-nom any frigates coming in.
People always tell the noobs to FW to fit frigs and tech1 everything, but this won't be very fun for very long. Try to get to tech2-fit cruisers as soon as you can because you'll be a lot more solo combat viable.

Edited by: Hirana Yoshida on 17/11/2008 09:09:55 As mentioned, stick to defensive plexing starting out. That way you are relatively safe while you get a hang of things and learn your way around without using map all the time. Focus on being godly in a frigate or cruiser and have a bunch of the chosen ship ready to fly for fast reshipping .. because you will die a lot

JUST SAY NO! to speedtanking npc's. It takes a specific tank but it's easy enough to do, mediums and up requires teamwork unless you speed tank which is in my opinion goes against the FW idea.

That's not PvP ... that's ganking The idea is sound though, there is a lot of PvP to be had in the plexes and you don't risk being jumped by a HAC gang if its a smaller one.

I would say fly t2 fitted frigates and have some cruisers scattered around area so you can swap ships if warranted.
Hint #1: remove Caldari and Amarr navy ships from overview, but keep them as brackets. Too many new FW pilots shoot any red cross they see on their overview resulting in a fiery death when not needed. Hint #2: If you think FW is something you want to do for the foreseeable future, keep an eye out for player corporations involved in militia. The support a corp can give both in advice and ships is quite significant. |
