Edited by: Qordel on 14/11/2008 01:00:44 Just got a subscriber email from Transgaming announcing Cedega 6.1.1 with Shader Model 3.0 support (needed for Premium EVE content). Cedega 7.0 on schedule for early Winter.
# Shader Model 3.0 Updates and other Graphics Updates
They also offer specific commentary about EVE (still wish we'd see more on this directly from CCP instead of their partners, but whatever). Appreciate Transmeta taking the time at least:
Did Anyone Get the Number of that MMORPG that Hit Me?
Last week was the Fifth Annual EVE Fanfest, the party at the top of the world. As the partner that bring EVE Online to Mac and Linux, TransGaming was invited to join a thousand players, staff, press and hangers on to join in the fun. I was lucky enough to attend this years festivities that included some excellent sessions, round tables, announcements and of course the type of party that only Icelanders could throw.
EVE players were shown the future of EVE with the announcement of the next expansion, True Exploration, scheduled for March 2008 that will include for the first time Tech 3 such as modular ships that will let players customize their vessels. Unexplored space, unstable wormholes and epic mission arcs will let players experience the universe like they never have before. The Walking in Stations demo gave everyone a sneak peek at an unscheduled expansion previously known as Ambulation. A total game changer for EVE Online W.I.S. will provide players with the ability to get out of their ships and, as the title suggest, walk in stations. More than just walking is in the works. Players will be able to rent out shops, bars, offices and other areas to provide a true social simulation within EVE. With mini-games, shops and even dancing slaves Walking in Stations will provide everyone something new to do within EVE.
Perhaps the most exciting news for Linux and Mac gamers alike is that the Premium content is now up and running in-house (those at the round table even got a brief sneak preview). While not yet ready for public release internal QA is underway and players can expect a Beta soon. The premium content was originally planned for Q1 2008 but was delayed when a number of issues, mostly related around performance, were discovered. CCP and TransGaming have been working together to identify a number of areas where improvements could be made on both sides of the fence. For example CCP was able to reduce draw calls in many cases, in one such case from over 250 draw calls down to 8. We are continuing to work on EVE Premium until it passes the exacting standards of both CCP and TransGaming.
Development Report November 13th 2008
A few months ago we had to address a timer issue we were having with EVE Online. It had come to our attention that the game would start to behave oddly (lock up temporarily or run at an accelerated pace) if the system clock changed. The problem turned out to be that the game was trying to do its own 32-bit timer wrap-around detection. That detection code was being triggered when the system clock moved back in time. Since our timer base depended on the UNIX gettimeofday() function, any change in the system clock would be reflected in the time results of the GetTickCount() and QueryPerformanceCounter() functions.

Agreed.
I'd say "believe it when I see it", but that they say they feel a beta is approaching is encouraging. I hope they or CCP follow up with status updates again soon and don't leave us hanging again. If they could update us in another month (even just to say "we're getting closer"), that'd be great.
I think most of us would have just sat back and STFU if CCP/Transmeta had said the above (or something like it) months ago.
They also mention some other games in the process of being supported (the new WOW expansion already is). Warhammer, Fallout 3, COD:WAW, C&C Red Alert 3... Presumably, this will all come around the release of Cedega 7.0? (Still scheduled for early winter, they claim).
Anyway... w00t! My spirits are uplifted, for now. Finally.

Exactly. For some reason CCP seems not to understand what the real concern is. EvE's playerbase tends to be somewhat geekier than that of most other MMORPGs. They know it but still ... cannot wrap their minds around the fact information is more important than timeliness.

Er...Beta....One year late and we get a beta! Thus also the current client feels like beta...
So, we have been whining/cursing/forcing/threats/crying etc. for one year about this info and where do we get it from? OUTSIDE CCP. You DO know what PR stands for right? Stop whining. |

It definitely stings a bit that CCP couldn't bother to tell us anything.
Instead, it had to come from a third party - TransGaming. And even then, only via a monthly email update that I just happened to get because I am subscribed to their mailing list and used to be a paying TransGaming customer.
I really get the "let's work hard and surprise everyone when we're done!" thing, but that doesn't count if it happens after too much time. It's usually safer to follow the "as much information as we can possibly share" model.

Yeah...well all we have are foggy estimates that have been shot to hell before. This only tells that the technology is there...using it is another matter.
With the recent history of marvellous patches *grin* I'm still waiting for those greased weasels. |

Thanks for posting this info Qordel. Would have been nice to have gotten it via CCP, but oh well. At least now we have something a bit more concrete.
Looking forward to the day I can reclaim a nice chunk of hard drive space by deleting the bootcamp partition and XP. |

Tsk
gettimeofday should not be used for time driven events. Instead CLOCK_MONOTONIC using clock_gettime(3) should be used as it cannot be affected by system time changes.
