So, for all of us runing the rollback version of the OSX client, what is CCP's plan for dealing with the broken client when Quantum Rise comes out? I can't imagine we will be allowed to connect with the old client, but I really, REALLY do not want to go back to the current rev.

I've been messing around with the second most recent revision on SiSi since the current doesn't work due to a bundling error. It has the same graphics bugs as 1441 but is also just as stable as 1441 so you should be ok when it comes out.

Edited by: Dr Sheepbringer on 05/11/2008 06:28:50 So...unless there is a fix ...QR = Macdeath. Hmm...it does have a ring to it.... MacDeath! MacBeth!
Ps. Seems like we need a REALLY LONG skills to be trained on 11th. Perhaps AS V...should take about 25 days...

Frankly, I almost don't even care and am about to give up on EVE on mac entirely. Rolling back (the cedega client) resulted in a system that didn't crash every few minutes. But you still are REQUIRED to upgrade EVE itself (just before logging in) and that update has resulted in the current EVE client still crashign FAR more often than my old one -- in and out of windowed mode. I used to crash a few times a week. Now I crash many times a night (but yes, not quite every few minutes).
Anyway, the rollback rolled back the cedega client and not the actual EVE content (as far as I know - since you still patch the game itself up when you are fired up). So you could probably use the same cedega client and just patch up the actual game when QR comes out.
Of course, the rolled back client + current EVE patch level is less reliable than the older patch level was. So it's possible for us to run the same client now, but upgrade the eve portion when QR comes out and end up with an even *less* stable game.
At this point, I would suggest that CCP stop advertising OSX/LINUX for EVE. That's what got me to come back to the game, only to find out the premium content actually did NOT work and the clients barely did either. They need to take the current EVE players on OSX and consider them beta testers and take away "official" release support for it as far as the public is concerned. Then focus on actually trying to get it to work well. If it requires assistance from Transmeta or whoever... well, then get that support. Either get it or just kill the entire thing and stop giving a wholly half-assed experience to full paying members.
And when/if things are working again, officially announce it as a supported product.

This "paying beta-tester" does suck and with 11th coming fast...i don't think there will be enough time to actually fix the client. I would guess that the devs are working hard on getting QR functional deploying it. Somehow I don't think mac-client development is in the pipe before 11th...

The Mac and Linux clients are clearly afterthoughts. The Cider model of farming out the port doesn't work when the game is a moving target like a MMO. ---- FREE Explorer Lead Megalomanic EVE Null-Sec Player Influence Map http://dl1.eve-files.com/media/corp/Veritefw/FWinf |

As i already posted on this forum, it is highly desirable that they publish the QR client with the old (and for most players most stable) cider. But they also need to keep the newer, albeit unstable, cider version available for those using ATI cards and the latest version of Leopard, because it seems for those the old cider is not working correctly any more. Meanwhile a big source of instability has been bug-reported with detailed information already and should be resolved in a relatively short time. And some of the published workaround settings do improve the situation significantly. Let's see what they decide to do.

What they really need to do is scrap Direct X and switch to OpenGL

What they really need to do...is scrap the mac/linux clients if this is the way they wanna play it.
Blizzard has the right way. They have had it from the beginning and they still have it. They WANTED the mac platform to be theirs and guess what. They did it. They do it native.
Don't expect people to think SUPERB GAME on all platforms when you only put effort into one platform...

Errr ... isn't that what I just said ? You can't do native DirectX on Linux or Mac, it has to be OpenGL.

I like it where the EVE player says: "Macsųdo people even use those?"

It's a pity they don't just open their protocol so someone else can write an openGl client. They already have it so that the server is the secure point of world access so cheating via a modified client would be pretty harmless....

I find that the rolled back client works very well for me, I'm actually quite happy with it.
But I also hope that QR will work with it.

I'm wondering now that they say in the patch notes that the textures will be fixed. So...this crashing is a cause of trying to fix those textures...or something else? Basically, will we have WORKING graphics and stableish client? Or fixed textures with crashing fever?
