First time I got non-consensually engaged in pvp? 5 minutes old, victim of a gatecamp near rancer :P
First time I intentionally got engaged in pvp? About 7 days old, my first corp got wardec'd by mercs. I was an expendable scout sitting at about 100k sp! Scagga is running for the CSM, see his campaign thread to know of his standpoints! |

Approximately as long as it took me to join recruitment channel, spell the sentence "Hi, I'm new, I'm looking for a corp.". By that time someone had contacted me, recruited me, and shoved me out into low sec with my dinky kestrel. I miss those days.

Second day in, i take offence at those hoity toity Concord police commissioners. Outcome predictable.
3 weeks'ish later i join FW with the Caldari militia. Blobs. Stuffed killmails.
Now, just under 2 months in game i roam lowsec occasionally, tangle with wt's. I consider my first 'real' pvp to be occurring at the moment as it requires more than spamming f1-f8.

Edited by: DubanFP on 03/11/2008 17:34:57 First week in EVE. I was making fun of the pirates in local because they couldn't kill me and my WCS. Then one of them brought a small fast ship with a 2 point scram. Didn't do very well . I was actively seeking PVP within my first month when I joined Four Rings and we went out to 0.0 with Myriad. Fun times ^^. My advice is start PVPing as early as possible. Firsthand experiences is about 1000x more valuable then SP and isk. _______________

I was about 2-3 weeks old in game and was lucky. My admired friend Tolin Dorden took me on as his special protegT and taught me PVP. Which, in his way of teaching, meant that I was the tackler in a cheap t1 frig and he was the damage ship in his shiny raven and we went on a bit of a lowsec rampage in the systems up near Jan/Nalvula. Lots of laughter!
I managed to get my sec status down to -3.5 I think before I went to 0.0... and never left 0.0 for a long period since, except to train in a good clone.
PVP? I still do it - and teach it myself now, just a bit more organized.

Within the first hour I played. Only been playing for about nine months. I didn't have a SINGLE clue what I was doing, so I decided to smack talk a bit to get some action. Natually I had a taker and said I'll blow him up no problem.(Didn't know you could even see other players born date). Funny thing is, I had to ask him in great detail on how to get where he was. Of course he couldn't tell me about warp to zero. So I literally auto-piloted through a bunch of low sec gates, which made me feel tough(now realizing why would anyone bother popping a rookie ship).
So about 30 minutes later I reached my destination. I see the guy and he starts talking about some junk of opening a can, I thought it was some distraction, so I went straight for him and got concordoken.
That's right. I'm hardcore like that. And I made my first million in less than an hour. He paid me.

These are some fantastic answers. It's interesting to see what a wide variety of experiences there are entering into the fray. Some jumped right in and others waited months. And in both camps, there are those that did it themselves and those that were pulled in against their wishes. Awesome.
I guess one thing I've been confused by has just been - is it pirating if you hunt out people to kill in lowsec for any reason? I mean, you're either A) faction warefaring or 2) participating on the part of a corp that is at war or 3) everything else is pirating (or lulling people into attacking you and then taking them out). Is that correct?
I know I'm probably putting way too much thought in this and hesitating needlessly, but I'm looking for the angle that is more than just "pew pew!" without reason. Something more than just jumping into a game of quake and shooting crap.
I'm also still learning exactly how standing works. I mean, I understand it in general. Just trying to comprehend the ramifications of even non-pirate activity (or rather, how to engage in non-pirate activity outside of pure 0.0 that results in me not being a totally bad guy).
Not that I'm against pirating, of course. It is kind of intriguing. I just don't want to paint myself into a corner and close off other options before I even really have my wings.
As for money... that's not so much of an issue. I'm not uber rich, but my main has a Hulk and a nice couple billion and change to share with the alt as needed. :)
Anyway, thanks for the awesome examples! I'm both sort of looking for "what direction should I go and how do I dip my toe in" *and* "what was YOUR experience/introduction" - so it is a real joy reading all of your messages so far.

Edited by: Andrue on 03/11/2008 20:33:36 Six months but I never really got into it then several more times over the years. I'm trying again with an alt but tbh it's mostly hours of boredom followed by ten minutes of excitement that don't really mean very much. It's good for the social aspect but the game play..meh. It's all just pixels dancing around ultimately. -- (Sarcastic mission running veteran, 4+ years)

Probably a month or so after I started, after seeing some of my failfit cruisers get exploded in the belts in mere seconds, I decided its going to be an outlaw life for me.
Only took me about a year and half to actually do it

I built two characters from the outset after reading about this game. One I made to be completely PVP oriented and the other is completely industrial oriented.
It STILL took about 6 months before I was comfortable jumping into a ship and looking for targets.
PVP in EVE is all at once the most thrilling and most boring thing you'll ever do in any MMO in existence. Unfortunately CCP has given people so many different ways of avoiding PVP that getting a fight is near to impossible without bringing a fleet to pound a POS first.

sometime w/in a month of playing the game
i was going through 00, not knowing wtf i was doing in a cruiser, got deep into Mostly Harmless's Space, and found myself in like a dead ended system, there was a station in system, lol i almost warped to it, until i was checking local, and they said something along the lines of "everyone in system is blue"
"not soldier though"
anyway, i jumped into another system trying to escape, and found out it was dead ended
i jump back into the original system, got through 2 or 3 BUBBLES in VEXOR, then i figure i was safe, im about 10 jumps from low sec, when i get caught by an interceptor who began shooting me, so obviously i defended myself, was obvioulsy missing w/ my autocannons, as he was orbiting extremely close, and my hammerheads werent being very effective
anyway, so, im going gate through gate tring to escape, just running away while this inty is taking pop shots at me all along the way, i somewhow managed to get away, and jumped into the last 00 system and he disengaged
i got all the way back to high sec (gulfonodi) the rest of the way, uneventful, not hitting any camp or any kind of populated system
so tl;djr:
i got deep into 00 space (40+ jumps easily) and got backed into a corner and ran like a scared little mouse, but it was fun, and what got me that peak interest in pvp

I was in a player corp that was mainly industrial in some back water system way out of the way. We were generally by ourselves, with just the NPC's and the belts to keep us company. Oh, the nostalgia. I got a new Moa cruiser, back when they were "in" and decided to take it on a road trip and see where I could go. Unknowingly, I travelled deep into lowsec territory (there were chains of low sec systems) and at one point, I decided to check out a belt. Woah! The NPC's here are much more valuable! Little did i know that another person had come into system and had scanned me out. By the time he was hitting me, I barely understood what was going on and when i did manage to figure it out and start firing on him, he was well within my railgun range. However, my missiles still almost got him, so it wasn't a total loss. Ever since then, been pew pewing to my heart's content!
