That low sec (0.1-0.4) is not to be feared and does not equal instant death. If you fly a shuttle or a frigate and keep moving (that is, don't use your autopilot, but continue to align and warp between gates/stations without pausing), the chances of you getting killed are pretty much zero.
Even if you encounter a bunch of flashy red hostiles at a gate, they don't have time to target you before you've moved on.

That you could set default "keep distance" and "orbit" ranges by right clicking on the two icons in the "Selected target" window and typing in a value (recommend a value equal to your missile range or your gun's optimal+fall off.)
That you can easily remove something from the overview by right-clicking on it (in the overview) and choosing remove (now I don't have to wade through that long list of wrecks and corp member drones to target the next rat.)

oh, and also that it is better to get an alt account early so as not to crosstrain too long.

I honestly played the game for five months before I was let on to this. Rolled a second account and noticed someone nonchalantly mention it in rookie help.

That Infomorph technology is a useless skill to get early on. I made my first mil and bought this for 900k. My highest corp standing was 0.5 . I wasn't happy!

I spent almost a month running missions off a L2Q20 agent because the only L3 agent I could easily find (in the same system, natch) was "only" Q14.

That unlike civilian railguns, normal guns actually require something called ammo.
And once I figured THAT out...
that you don't need to redock to reload your ammo by dragging it in the fitting screen; you can actually put it in your cargo hold and it'll restock from there "on the fly" --

TBH forming a corp with a few RL friends (all of us newbs) is quite possibly the thing that got me into eve, I've not been able to spend more then a week or 2 in any corp not run by me
That being said:
I wish I had had someone to tell me to ignore everything people say about what skills you need to do certain things. I wanna slap someone across the face every time I see someone tell a new player not to fly a BS until he can fully tech II fit it...
I also had someone tell my alt today that it's a bad idea to use a domi in lvl 4s solo unless you have BS V
If you want to fly it, and can afford to lose it, fly it, you don't need to wait 8 months until you can perfectly fit it before you do. (though you should make sure you can fit it with proper sized mods first |

Things I wish I knew when I started playing EVE (PvE side):
1) Logistics are not needed. Unlike other MMOs, in EVE the tank either does their own healing, or is a fail tank.
2) DPS is king. Unlike other MMOs, tanking is braindead. Shoot the enemy first, you're tha tank. Who does most DPS doesn't matter.
3) DPS is for losers. There are far better ways to make money than to grind missions all day.
4) To fly logistics properly requires a significant investment of time. To fly a gunship proerly requires a significant investment of time. To fly a mining ship properly requires a significant investment of time. None of these career paths are synergistic. To fly a logistics boat, you will invest a huge amount of time training outside gunnery or missile operations. To fly a DPS boat, you will invest a huge amount of time within gunnery or missile operations. To run a trade operation, you will invest a huge amount of time not using weapons at all.
5) By the time you find out what style of play you prefer, it's too late to change your mind about the training you've done that won't be used.
6) Joining a corp of less than 20 people that you don't know is not going to enhance your enjoyment of the game.
7) The time to leave your current corp is when you have logged on for 7 days in a row and noone else has been online.
8) You must have some income to support your PvP habit.
9) Mining is not fun.
10) Mission running looks like fun to start with, but after you run the same 20 missions over and over again, it starts to feel an awful lot like WoW.
11) People stumbling into gate camps are often fitted out with expensive (ie: very resellable) modules.
12) EVE is a PvP game.
13) If you feel the need to post on the forums about how someone griefed you and how it's not fair... you just lost the PvP game.
14) It is better to have Yarred and lost than to never have Yarred at all!
15) you don't have to fly a battleship to be scary
16) For PvE purposes, upgrade to the next size hull first, train weapon and tanking skills later. You have more turret slots, more low slots, more medium slots, and the modules that you can fit with the bigger power grid and CPU available make your ship much, much stronger.
17) When it comes to running missions, it doesn't matter if you can only fit medium sized weaponry to your battleship. As long as you can kill NPCs without dying yourself, you're winning.
18) When it comes to PvP, it doesn't matter if you can fit T2 weapons and tank. If you don't have friends, you're going to die.
19) Half the fun of PvP is seeing how long you can last before you die.
20) In PvP, death is the only way out.
21) If you have enough friends, it's the other guys who die.
Okay. I think four standard drinks in half an hour is more than enough.
Please Mr. EVE Man, boot the server for me?

oops. apparently that wasn't enough.
Did you know that you can open up "Settings", click the "General" tab, and uncheck the box that says, "try to use existing info window where possible"? Then any time you select "Show Info", you'll get a new Info window!
In fact ...
Did you know that when you press "ESC", the window that comes up can control more than just the graphics? Check out the tabs - "General" which controls things like whether "Pinned" windows (click the circle in the top right of the title bar) can be locked so you can't move them. "Shortcuts" which lets you assign keystrokes such as "All Drones Engage Target" and "All drones return to drone bay".
And talking about drones, did you know that there's special code in the PvE side of EVE that makes sure that NPCs will target your drones in preference to your ship? True story. Stupid bloody NPCs costing me 500k ISK a unit!
Okay, now I'm just whinging aren't I?

That there is a skill called "Afterburner" which allows to operate modules that increase your ship's speed... This was back when there was no warp to 0 - I figured out 3 months later after I had finished my learning skills and had been traveling all day from 15km distance to the gate...in an industrial ship. * See you in space! |

Hehe did that one, fanfully it became useful later .

This almost happened to me but didn't force me to quit, instead it got me to a older corp. But my original corp was with friends so it wasn't all bad! We just never got anyone to stay when we recruited them.
My advice is to not be Afraid of lowsec, I was honestly scared of it when i first started playing, but now lowsec seems like a kitten compared ton 0.0 lmao.
Also look at other people's Bios, not only can they be helpful but they can be hilarious. Its one of my favorite things to do when in a random system and am bored.
My personal favorite Bio was one that said: I beta tested your sister!
i loled so hard at that one.

This is an interesting statement, especially since I'd guess that's the most common kind of corp in Eve. And the kind that a new player with no friends in the game might end up in. Any thoughts on this or other recommendations for a new player looking for a corp?

That the above is generally true, but not really so: lost a couple of +5 implants and a +3 to a SB BS.

That Infomorph is extremely useful since the very beginning. I have an int/mem implanted clone for fast skilling those in hisec, per/will implanted clone for fast skilling those in hisec and empty/low implants clones for lowsec/nullsec/war time skilling. My highest standing is probably something like 0.1 as I stopped missioning before ending the trial. Buy the clones from a service. Or buy a pre-made corporation (run it with an alt). Better yet: join a good corporation that will provide you JC access.

That fitting guns to a Punisher can be a smart move if you have low skills.
