Hello, I confess to know nothing about exploration and im certainly not looking to get all the answers from the guys and gals that have put many hours in to it themselves.
What i'm after is this: I want to find hidden belts in my current mining system, I know they are there I've been to a couple given away by other explorers that weren't interested in them. I know I need a probe launcher and probes, I just wondered what type would be best to find these types of sites?
Then I'm quite happy to spend the time practiceing using them and figuring the rest out on my own, and if i find other sites I will pass them on to others who are interested in them.
Any help on the subject for ship fitting and ship type etc would be very welcomed indeed.
Thank you in advance, Brego. -----------------------------------------------

Covert ops (or t1 scanning frig if desperate), scan probe launcher (sisters if can afford) multi-spec probes (to make sure there is a sig there) and gravimetric probes of different ranges (to find the plex). That guide explains it all pretty well, just don't expect to have an easy time finding sigs in busy areas.

well i broke out the covert ship and loaded up some Multi-spec and Gravametric probes after reading the guide suggested in the previous posts.
Lauched a multi-spec and found an unknown Sig, so used 3 of the Grav probes and located the Sig, I then used the 2au range Grav probe to narrow down the Sig and bang found it! Was expecting i wouuld need to use the other probes to narrow down the sig, but beginers luck I warped to zero and........
It was a warp gate to a Drone infestation, with a big station battery floating about, killed the drones and looted etc.
Thanks for the help, I know I was after roid belts but hey it was fun to do and im sure i'll continue to probe my local system in the future!
Thanks for the advice guys/gals. fly safe. -----------------------------------------------

I too am just looking to start exploring, mainly I think for mining.
I've read the guide, and watched the video by DNightmare (very helpful) and hope to give it a try tomorrow.
I think I've gathered what to do - drop a multi probe, if it finds something, use the right probe to narrow down the location by dropping them near planets?
Once located, enjoy?
Shame I can't easily fly a covert ops ship :)

The multispectral will tell you what types of sites are in the system. It does not tell you how many of each type are in the system. If it says "Gravimetric" that means there is at least one hidden asteroid belt, but it could be more. Since combat sites (unknowns) show up on any type of probes, it can be interesting trying to run down a system that has both an unknown and another signature type. You can never be certain what you've just located. ______________________________________________________ Isn't it enough to know that I ruined a pony making a gift for you? |

Unknowns are generally easier to find than grav sites. Most unknowns will return a higher signal strength hit (the dot on your system map will be yellow instead of red) and can be tracked down much faster than your average grav site.
It's been my experience that grav's are the hardest sites to probe out. About twice as hard as radars and 3-4 times harder than unknowns.
YMMV of course.

well I have to say that I have explored my home system each day after DT, and each time I have found 'unknown signatures'. I have managed to find these quite easily and warp to zero using a 2au probe once I have located it with the 4au probe.
So far ive not found any Grav sites, and the sites i have found id a jumps gate leading to a giant space station battery with drones spawns.
If this rings a bell with anyone i have a question! There are 4 cargo containers floating close to the battery, their icon is red (cargo cans normally have a white or yellow icon) I can open them but they are all empty, i just wondered if these cans held anything interesting or i needed some other piece of equipment to access the contents?
Anyway, im having great fun practicing with probes and have got my Astrometrics to IV now so can use the higher probe lvls. Any other tips on skills to train?
Thanks for all the help i have received on this interesting topic so far. -----------------------------------------------
