Edited by: Bayushi Kitsuke on 06/10/2008 22:53:04 I'm currently playing Gallente and I love using drones. However, I noticed that there's only one ship that can shield tank (Myr) and people say you're practically forced to armor tank the rest. I never been comfortable with the idea of armor tanking (Lost more ships to armor tanking then shield). Now I'm close to upgrading to a battleship and what to see if it's possible to shield tank a Dominix. I know armor tanking with it will be better, I just want to see just how much less effective shield tanking is.
So I made 3 builds to compare - 2 shield tanking and 1 armor.
Constructive input would be appreciated!

What I noticed so far is that a shield tank set up with a Domi will be weaker in the defense but have a lot more damage output. The best overall is the passive tank with decent tanking while having being able to dish out a lot of damage.
Eve fitting tool was used in this and all skills are considered lv 5. Anti-Matter Charge was used as ammo.

I think you've got extra digits in your DPS for the top two setups, or your missing a decimal place. 2k DPS in a Domi? O_o

Yeah.... That's a BIG oops on my part - Sorry
Passive S - 673 Active S - 634 Armor - 547
The shield tanks still dish out more dps. I'll edit the post to reflect the correct values.

Uh, you realise the only reason the armor tanked one deals less damage is that you for some reason put 2xNos and smaller guns on that one, right?
EDIT: Not that I necessarily disagree with your point, I think shield Domis could make pretty good AFK mission boats. But I do not think your comparison is entirely fair. EDIT2: Why T2 rigs on the passive setup but not the others?

Quote: Uh, you realise the only reason the armor tanked one deals less damage is that you for some reason put 2xNos and smaller guns on that one, right?
Yes, that's because the set up can only fit smaller guns. The NOS was added to help the cap recharge. I took the armor tank set up from the forums.

Please post a better armor tank set up. I know I'm not a genius at ship set ups, hince the request for help.
Quote: Why T2 rigs on the passive setup but not the others?
Due to calibration. Putting all t2 rigs on it made the set go into the negatives. Again, if you have a set that you think would prove better, please post it.

Sorry, I did not mean to sound snide. =/
Now, to try to be helpful. Time for setup posting!
Here is an armor tank I like a bit more. I think it fits your priorities, an sturdy omni-tank and fair DPS. You are also content to use T2 rigs and the smallest type of BS rails.
[Dominix, Dual Rep Armor Tank] Large Armor Repairer II Large Armor Repairer II Energized Adaptive Nano Membrane II Energized Adaptive Nano Membrane II Armor Explosive Hardener II Damage Control II Power Diagnostic System II
Cap Recharger II Cap Recharger II Cap Recharger II Cap Recharger II Tracking Computer II

Capacitor Control Circuit II Capacitor Control Circuit I Capacitor Control Circuit I
Ogre II x5
504 rainbow DPS tanked 718 DPS dealt
Fully cap stable. If you want more drone range, you can easily drop a gun. This would also allow you to downgrade the CCC2 to a CCC1 while remaining fully cap stable. The main advantage I think this fit has over the first armor tanking one you posted is that it does not depend on Nos. The rest (I have a weaker tank and more damage) is a matter of preference, I think. As seen by your second setup. I think it is fine, just not how I want it.
================ Here is an armor tanking setup, probably closer to how I would do it:
[Dominix, Monorep Armor Tank] Large Armor Repairer II Armor Thermic Hardener II Armor Thermic Hardener II Armor Kinetic Hardener II Damage Control II Magnetic Field Stabilizer II Magnetic Field Stabilizer II
Omnidirectional Tracking Link I Omnidirectional Tracking Link I Cap Recharger II Cap Recharger II Cap Recharger II
350mm Railgun II, Antimatter Charge L 350mm Railgun II, Antimatter Charge L 350mm Railgun II, Antimatter Charge L 350mm Railgun II, Antimatter Charge L 350mm Railgun II, Antimatter Charge L Small Tractor Beam I
Capacitor Control Circuit I Capacitor Control Circuit I Capacitor Control Circuit I
Garde II x5
181 rainbow DPS tanked 768 DPS dealt
This may look quite a lot worse than the first setup I posted as far as tank/damage numbers are concerned. Let me explain myself. =) I like neither "overtanking" nor omni-tanks in PvE. So this setup here has a specific tank, setup to match a Serpentis damage scheme I have loaded in EFT (55% therm, 45% kin. No idea how accurate it really is, but it seems to work well enough). Using that scheme, my tank is 389. I think this is closer to being a "sniping" setup. It can sit at range and deal its DPS. No DPS lost to drone flight time. I would guess this completes missions faster.
Also, I never use T2 rigs. Waaaaaaay out of my price range. This is cap stable without them. 0_o And it has a tractor. I like tractors. \o/ ================ Shield tanking... this turned out much better than I thought, actually. First I tried an XL booster, as you did, this is what I ended up with:
[Dominix, Shield tank, XL booster] Capacitor Flux Coil II Capacitor Flux Coil II Capacitor Flux Coil II Capacitor Flux Coil II Capacitor Flux Coil II Capacitor Flux Coil II Magnetic Field Stabilizer II
X-Large C5-L Emergency Shield Overload I Shield Boost Amplifier II Ballistic Deflection Field II Heat Dissipation Field II Ditrigonal Thermal Barrier Crystallization I
350mm Railgun II, Antimatter Charge L 350mm Railgun II, Antimatter Charge L 350mm Railgun II, Antimatter Charge L 350mm Railgun II, Antimatter Charge L 350mm Railgun II, Antimatter Charge L Small Tractor Beam I
Capacitor Control Circuit I Capacitor Control Circuit I Capacitor Control Circuit I
Ogre II x5
669 Serpentis DPS tanked (316 rainbow) 741 DPS dealt
This is a bloody brick. You have to screw up reeeeeaally badly to have this blow up on you, I would guess. 0_o
Weakness? Drone travel time, I suppose. And no tracking. =/

Edited by: Ljonynja on 07/10/2008 02:10:49 OK, one more. EFT warrioring is fun. xD

Capacitor Control Circuit I Capacitor Control Circuit I Capacitor Control Circuit I

I guess this is the "gank" version of the XL boosting brick I posted above. I switched out the XL booster for a large one, and used the CPU, cap, and grid to get two more magstabs, an extra turret, and a T2 boost amp (was using the T1 boost amp before due to CPU shortage).
I still did not have enough CPU for a full set of T2 hardeners, though. Both of the shield tanked fits are really tight on the CPU. =( Would probably use a turret CPU implant to make it all fit more snugly in real EVE.
EDIT: Maybe it would be better to use CPRs to run an XL booster. Might try that tomorrow, sleep now.
And I should also create a non-capstable setup sporting that yummy XL booster and more gank. Should be better in a real mission situation.

You dont really passive shield tank a domi.
What you do is active shield tank it with officer mods. Which allows you to use sentry dmg rigs and 6 large officer blasters.
You deal near to 1000dps and the tank is tons.
Only problem is other ships suicide ganking you. There's some vids on the forum somewhere with it. It's pretty fun. ------------------------ "There was this bright flash of light - and now this egg shaped thing is on my screen - did I level up?" |

Awesome, thanks! So this is proving to be rather informative threat showing that in fact Domi can shield tank.
I would love to finish the thread with a armor vs shields for a Domi.

Officer mods aren't easy to get if I recall correctly. But if you can, post the set up?
So, from what it looks like - you're not sacrificing much to pick shield tanking over armor tanking. Thus, it can actually be up to your play style preferences.

Edited by: Pottsey on 07/10/2008 06:21:05 I prefer 6x 425mm railguns T2 with no drone aug with the passive shield tank. The Domi can shield tank I have been doing it for 4+ years. In fact the Domi started out as a shield tank, at the start you only ever shield tanked it. As its PvE you may as well add on the 3 passive implants that boost passive shield tanking and the one that boosts turret damage.

Your dps sucks. This is the only shield-tanked Dominix setup you will ever need:
[Dominix, New Setup 1] Magnetic Field Stabilizer II Magnetic Field Stabilizer II Magnetic Field Stabilizer II Power Diagnostic System II Power Diagnostic System II Power Diagnostic System II Reactor Control Unit II
100MN MicroWarpdrive II Large Shield Extender II Large Shield Extender II Stasis Webifier II Warp Disruptor II
Neutron Blaster Cannon II, Caldari Navy Antimatter Charge L Neutron Blaster Cannon II, Caldari Navy Antimatter Charge L Neutron Blaster Cannon II, Caldari Navy Antimatter Charge L Neutron Blaster Cannon II, Caldari Navy Antimatter Charge L Neutron Blaster Cannon II, Caldari Navy Antimatter Charge L Neutron Blaster Cannon II, Caldari Navy Antimatter Charge L
Core Defence Field Extender I Core Defence Field Extender I Core Defence Field Extender I
Ogre II x5
You have considerably less need for tank when you're doing 1400 dps (more, with implants).
