Edited by: Tiberius Maddox on 06/10/2008 04:57:28 Does anyone here have experience with the X3 series of space sims? I see that egosoft is about to release X3: Terran Conflict, and I'm wondering if the others were any good.
BTW, I like the look of the planets in Terran Conflict. Can't wait to see what CCP has in store for the planet graphics in EVE.

played X2, it becomes boring fast because the AI is dumb and didn't try any mods. will play X3 only if/when the B5 mod will be done.

x3 is a great game try it.
It has a steep learning curve at first, a lot like eve, only i think eve at least tells you how to move =p
One downside of it though is that your own personal ship is always going to be a fighter (or maybe an m7). The corvettes and capital class ships are no good for players to use =/ They are more for building massive fleets for your empire and having them protect your trade routs.
Also the in sector or out of sector combat is handled differently. If you are in sector all your ships will fight the enemy using their combat AI. Out of sector they just run some numbers based on stats to decide who wins.
Either is fine, but there are different setups that are good for each. Some ships are great for out of sector combat but in sector the AI is just too stupid with them D=
Its still a great game, it just has problems and can be kind of easily exploited if you know what you are doing (my new starts im usualy flying around in an eclipse, which is one of the best fighters in the game, after a few hours, just because i know how to fight the AI and i can cap them easily in a pirate buster if i want to).
Its a fun game.. try it ^_^ But keep in minds its an empire building game. You can plant stations and complexes of stations, set up automated traders and automated haulers for your stations and whole trade routs, manipulate economies so the game moves goods around for you, and even build ships for yourself (once you get the player HQ) if you want to.
Many of the side parts of the game can not be completed in your little fighter (the storyline can).

You can get X3 on steam by the way, i recommend that over trying to buy it, because some of the disks are corrupt=P
Terren conflict is not an x3 expansion though, its standalone. So you may want to just wait for that, its essentially x3 with a different main story set slightly ahead. Uses the same engine and everything but they added more stuff to it.

Runs fine on my old PC. Athlon 3100, 2gb, Geforce 6200.
To make it worth playing though, you really have to leave it running with automated traders while you're away. Even with 10 traders running haulers, it took me 3 days to get enough cash to buy anything half decent. Also, there's the standings to consider, it takes a long time to get enough standing to buy stations and stuff, even with the game left running.
Getting a ship big enough to carry a station is a problem though, they cost big time and require high standings. If you have the Bala-gi missions version, once you get the Posiedon, it's pretty much game over since it can pop anything with ease, I held out in a Xenon sector for ages with cap ships firing at me as well in the Posiedon. When you finally get your own base, you can reverse engineer the ships and make a fleet of Posiedons if you want.
My only real gripes about the game though was that the map was far too small. If they had 4 or 5 times the number of sectors, it would have been great. also each sector could have been much bigger, 5 minutes in a Buster with a triplex scanner and maxed engines and rudder could uncover everything in any sector in the game, even the biggest ones. It doesn't take very long to map every sector in the game. The other gripe was jumping, as long as you had enough fuel, you could jump from one end of the universe to the other, there were no limits except fuel. The final gripe was the limited combat AI, there was no "scout ahead" command as such for wingmen. There is one time when you have no choice but to fly the big slow beastie, that's when you have to tow the Posiedon to the station. There's no way to make your wingmen scout ahead and intercept any pirates that come after you so you may end up doing that mission over and over until you get lucky. You can double click on any point on the map to make your ship fly to a set position but your wingmen have to fly to an object only, you can't make them fly a set distance ahead so, all you can do is send them to the next gate cos there's no roids in one or two of the sectors you have to go through.
Also, unless they've released a patch, it won't run on Vista.

Wow, have they improved the gfx again?
I have x3 but haven't spent much time with it yet. Don't like the controls, they feel way too stiff plus it's a game you need patience for.

The steam version runs on vista, I bought it from steam because it was cheap and I thought it might be fun to try out but I could never really get into it as it seemed unsatisfying and I am not a fan of joysticks so I was never happy with the controls.

the new X3 Terran Conflict revamped lots of the major nagging UI and group control issues that the original X3 had, like no mouse support for the sector map, proper mouse support for flight and combat, rightclick menus for ship command and control, more ship diversity in the form of frigates bridging the gap between corvette and destroyer, etc etc etc.

Dont use a joystick, use wasd zx and mouse ^_^
x3 combat for dummies
1. hit wasd in a circular fashion, do it slowly, maybe 2 seconds per key then change. 2. Controll your speed to keep far enough away from the npcs that doing number 1 makes them miss you 100% of the time. 3. Shoot at them. 4. IF they get close turn away and boost! then stop, turn around, and start at number 1
Remember to use speed. If you are a small fast ship keep distance! The guns that hurt move slowly through space, you can always outstrafe them! Everyone strafes the same speed, a maneuverable ships advantage is that it can turn around and go away at max speed to gain distance, then turn around and shoot. Shoot and scoot ^___^ I never even get hit anymore =x
Doing this you should be able to take out anything 1 vs 1 if you are patient enough.
other than khaak, which have those screwy beams that are hard to dodge.

The original release had an awful DRM security layer that could slow even the most beastly computer to a crawl. Seeing as the game was cracked within a few months regardless, the developers dropped it from subsequent releases (including most recent boxed versions and presumably the Steam version). If you're unlucky enough to have a DRM's version, it'll barely run no matter what you do to the graphics options.
EDIT: StarForce copy protection, apparently. ------

1) It's very CPU dependant. No matter what you do to the graphics settings, the CPU is the main bottleneck in x3.
2) It's ghettostyle coded. Sometimes it runs on a less powerful machine better than it does on a faster computer. It's a bit like rolling a dice, you never know what you get. For instance the most recent patch gives me stuttering on specific maneuvers while one patch ago it was fine.
I don't think I'll buy anything from those guys again, even tho the x series is actually... good.

the x series has allways been equipped with some nice optics. but that's allready all i think. the game is nice for some time, but it really gets boring within the time.
and there is allways some trouble with the publisher deepsilver. the x3 was put into the market shortly before christmas, so they can make some money. for that one the manual was telling you stuff which never arrived in the game. the game crashed a lot of time. x3 was gameable after....hmmm... let's say a half of a year... when they dropped several patches. one positive thing about is , that egosoft really listens to their customers, so a lot of ideas from players, (some times player-programmed) go straight into the game, in some patch or stuff. and it's programmer friendly.

Start with X2, Get it on torrent or sth. Its better than x3 imo. X3 is the same as Terran conflict, especially if they re releasing Terran conflict as an expansion.
So, get the first x3, update it, and than go for one of the best mods for it. after u played the story line a bit and got used to it.
I Don't like the AI, yet some mod improve them with formation options and such.
Also i wish they had a multilayer, it would be the best space multilayer out there, but for some reason they don't.

I captured a Xenon M1 and just went pimping around space in it. Really nice ship (and it looks like a Charon, only all black and evil looking).
The mod that has random attacks on major star systems rocks. Massive Xenon, Khaak, or pirate fleets attack populated areas and chaos ensues.
Can't wait for TC

But I must ask you guys a question. Is it fun like Star Wars Tie Fighter / X-wing series and a game I can use a joystick with? Considering to buy this, since it seems interesting/fun and being sold at steam. :) -----------------------------------

If you like EVE you will probably like X3. Yes you can use a joystick. If you purchase the game I highly recommend you don't bother with the original game and install the Xtended mod. Kind of like Oblivion Lost for STALKER, Xtended turns X3 into a whole new game which is completely awesome.
Other plugins I recommend:
xOne Turret Control System (makes cap ships ultra deadly)
Station/Complex Seller (to sell badly-placed stations or complexes)
Race Invasions (makes for some pretty epic fleet battles in random locations, and you get paid for it too)
Race Response fleets (either to help you with those pesky invasions or to attack you if they don't like you. Very useful and fun)
BBS Extras (adds some new jobs to the BBS).
There are more plugins (mods) that I can shake a fist at for X3, so the choice is up to you, but I HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend installing the Xtended mod before you even start the game.
If I had an Alt I would probably post with it... |

The best thing to do is go on the X3 forums and download some of the player scripts. They are simple to install if you dl the installer and make the gameplay so much better in most cases. The scripting is relatively easy, even for a novice so it won't be long before you're writing your own. I created several for stations I had so I didn't need to keep messing with prices and fund transfers etc.

I am a huge fan of the X series dating back to x-beyond the frontier, I never got their first release but xbtf had me playing for months.
They are extremely difficult to get into but worth the effort.
I like the variety of missions, the fact some are insanely hard (I never did catch that fighter in xbtf, I did break three joysticks trying), the fact that the main plot can be diverted from and probably lots more.
Well worth a look for space sim fans.
X2 is also available on Steam I believe, it too works on Vista after a bit of a fiddle.

X3 was a lot of fun for the time that I didn't have an internet connection.
I built up a couple Silicon Mines and Solar Factory XLs and just made tons and tons of credits.
Pretty soon the market crashed and I had a pile of capitals and corvettes along with all these freighters just laying around doing nothing. I moved them down from Terran space to Paranid space and started doing normal ore and got my profits back up again.
Anyway, the game is fun, but is limiting truly in terms of what you can accomplish. The only thing I find fun is trading; as piracy really has no true benefits after you've gotten a Nova with all the top guns and what not.
Novas made the game easy mode anyway ;\

Weird. X3 topics always seem to crop up when I've recently become engrossed with it again.
I lost my old savegame, so it's taken me quite a while to motivate myself to start over - which I finally did at the weekend. This time I installed Xtended, and took a start with no plot and very few starting resouces to see how I could do without much starting help. I also probibited myself from getting co-ordinates for free hidden ships. Originally by: Dantes Revenge To make it worth playing though, you really have to leave it running with automated traders while you're away.
Strongly disagree. IMO, this is the best way to make the game boring. You get a slow trickle of easy money so - as you say - it takes a while to have enough cash for anything. You end up leaving it running on SETA and this way you never get too form a good knowledge of the economics of the universe.
In my new game I have, for now anyway, banned myself from using Trade command software Mk3, so everything is done either using manually-operated traders or Commercial agents for my factory complexes. This way, I hardly ever use SETA. I put up satellites in systems where good profitsss are to be made, and while I'm travelling in my fighting ship (captured pirate buster - for now ) I spend the time checking prices rather than just speeding it up and tapping my fingers on the desk.
So far I've set up 4 simple factory complexes. I've acquired a couple of police licences and I've been scanning ships for illegal goods. Yesterday I got owned by a hauler Damn BPAC in the back turret. Considering setting up a spaceweed factory so I can bust my own customers.
Also, for your amusement: Yesterday I was sitting by a gate waiting for my hired Orca to turn up carrying some stations. Eventually, it jumped through the gate behind me and killed me --

One thing I find annoying is that the SETA thing doesn't come integrated with every ship. So if you find yourself stuck in a ship without it, you have to play the game on slow mode until you can dock.

Aye, I find relying on the Automated Traders to really make the game boring.
I spent a month setting up a number of closed loops, building up my weapons and munitions empire and only used automated traders to passively sell my excess stock.

In the last few days, I've started playing this game again. This time, I figured out how to deploy stations. I've currently got a Wheat Farm M Alpha in The Wall which gives me a nice steady income (especially since energy cells can be bought in-system fairly cheaply). I've also set up a Plankton Farm L Alpha in Bluish Snout (pretty much the other side of the galaxy, and there are lots of Xenon floating about). Again, there's a cheap energy cell supplier in system, and a generous buyer of plankton. I just don't dare leave my cargo ship on automatic in case the Xenon come along and kill it. I've put satellites all over the system and will only let my cargo ship collect energy cells or sell my plankton if there's no sign of any reds.

The X Series is one of, if not THE BEST series of space based RPG's EVER.
There is no comparison... Will defiantly be getting x3:tc when it comes out, as I have loved them all since i started.
Works well(enough) on my failure of a laptop, and with a joystick it can be an amazing game. keep in mind there is also a pause key hidden in the settings you can use if you need to go afk ^^
Mods are also the reason this game still exists. Much the same as other RPG's, it is a easily (well, the game has an ingame script editor so you can write your own scripts for it... ), and many people take advantage of that. Cycrow has even wrote a program to manage all the various scripts people install, as well as writing a huge line of Bulletin board based missions.
If you are looking for a second addiction (aside from eve i mean), x3 is the way to go.
Oh yea, try your hand at scripting sometime, its fun
