Currently space in Eve is VERY sterile. except for a few exceptions there is NOTHING in space to make one system more interesting then any other. What I am proposing is twofold. First of all, a revamp on current space geography, as well as adding a whole bunch new stuff. Because as it stands, space in eve is VERY, VERY, empty. The changes I am proposing not only make eve a more interesting place to be, but make the game from a spreadsheet with graphics, to a game that requires you to actively maneuver your ship. Fixing this would be done in several steps, growing in complexity, so I would assume it would be done bit by bit.
Phase 1: Fixing the existing Space geography. A current major issue with Eve is the blooming nebula backgrounds. I for one don't mind most of them. But I know that people are constantly complaining about the brightness of them. So the first thing that would need to be done is some consistency would be added. So if your about to enter a system filled with bright red nebula, then unless its a particularly distant jump, then you should be able to see that bright red nebula from the system your currently in. (Pator-Onga jump comes to mind) Secondly, the asteroid belts should be fixed. To do this, you would replace the belts with a massive, unminable asteroid and a trail of smaller, minable asteroids stretched out behind them. During the daily downtime, the asteroid would advance in its orbit and lay down a new spread of asteroids, along with despawning MOST, but not all of the rocks in its last position. This means that there can effectively be one warp-to point for an asteroid belt, and it replaces the completely absurd asteroid belts that currently exist.
Phase 2: Upgrading Existing space geography First off, the majority of Eve's existing geography is boring and uninteresting (yes moons, I am looking at YOU) This step in the process would hypothetically correspond with the graphics updates to stellar and mission objects that should in theory be coming out in June-July of next year. Secondly, current ring systems would be replaced with ACTUAL rings, a cloud of dust and (mostly) unminable asteroids completely rimming the planet. Along with this, planets and stations would get yet another scale up. The last phase of this would be to add interesting wreckage and other mission objects to locations they would tastefully fit in order to make the space more interesting. For instance, in a planetary ring, maybe the mission object with the thorax that has been smashed into by a rock should be put in at a warp in point. Or at a nullsec gate with a good truesec rating would have a corresponding rat listening post a ways of the gate. Maybe in factional warfare lowsec, there would be wrecks on the gates in systems. __________________________________________________ |

Phase 3: Adding New, interesting Objects and Creating a unique system environment. This would be the biggest change proposed and would require the most time investment, its also the most rewarding. This change would require the artists and the writers to conspire on a massive scale to make each system unique and having its own little bit of history. The first thing that would need to be done is the creation of a large number of new space objects, wrecks for many more ship classes, boarding platforms for walking through stargates, upgrades to clouds and asteroid graphics as well as making gameplay alterations, so that things like gas clouds would effect certain weapons and systems. For instance, a rubble filled dust cloud would decrease your overall speed, or an electrically charged gas cloud would lower the damage ton by lasers. Things like this would actually make you think about what ships you bring to fight at a given location, and makes tactics and planning much more important. Then these things would be seeded into systems they would realistically go in. Going back to the example system of Onga, its backdrop is filled with red clouds, so fill the system with masses of red clouds. Maybe those red clouds lower the effectiveness of your shipboard sensors, so you can't lock as quickly or over as long a range. So if you were fighting in Onga, it would be wise to bring sensor boosters with you. Maybe a gate is hidden in an asteroid cloud, maybe its right near a flowing wall of clouds, maybe it was the site of a major battle and there are wrecks floating everywhere. You could make it even further complex and interesting by putting certain gates and stations inside deadspace pockets, so you have to warp in to a acceleration gate and warp into a huge energy cloud to approach a station.
Phase 4: Making a Dynamic wreckage system This is a fairly small change but would be rather difficult to implement do to the possible implications in the engine. But basically, in places where a certain number of ships are destroyed on a regular base value, then wreckage would appear at that location (be it on a gate, planet or asteroid belt) with one ship for every time the value is met for the given period (1 week default). Also, if enough ships are destroyed fast enough, a certain threshold is reached and the wrecks become a permanent feature of the system. So after a massive goonswarm defeat, there would be a permanent cloud of wrecked ships at the location. Of course, these wrecks could be destroyed to clear the space for battle.
These changes as a whole would make space more interesting on a systemwide level. It would give players a reason to explore and travel, to see the sights, there are so many things that this would allow, you could hide a fleet in a gas cloud, or lose pursuing battleship in a cruiser by zooming through a group of tightly packed asteroids that the battleship can't go through. The possibilities are limitless. __________________________________________________ |

You do realize that the devs are working very hard to reduce lag... These changes might be easily possible for a game like WoW where you have a handfull of players per server (those servers are considered to be FULL with only 1.000 players), bu imagine that on our servers with 40.000 players! There might be small things they could bring back (like the movement of objects in space during downtimes), but the bigger changes you propose will most likely kill all interactivity. Imagine what happens if you warp to some pont with interesting scenery and an enemy waiting. Sure, you'll get something to see: Your ship, as it explodes - just after you passed the lag. --- "Multiple exclamation marks are a sure sign for a diseased mind." -Terry Pratchett |

I agree with you on all your points except that one. I think multiple belts is a good thing...the systems would be more boring with only 1 belt.

no, there are the same number of belts, the only difference from the current system is when you warp to a given belt, you end up in a cloud of debris behind a big rock instead of the impossible rock rink that exists now. __________________________________________________ |

One thing they could do is instead of random backdrops they create a 3d model of the eve galaxy, with all the systems, stars, nebula and other such cosmic anomalies and then generate a unique backdrop for each system generated from the systems relative location inside the galaxy.

A lot of nice ideas that would make this game better, imo.

If you go almost to the bottom you will see their plans for asteroid belts, and with a bit of forum trolling you will also see that they are working on revamping the graphics such as planets moons and other static items.
Also in some of the factional warfare systems, they actually do have the occasion wreck, structure and other stuff. But having too much off a good thing can turn into a bad thing as far as lag goes too. |

It's already setup that way. In fact when they changed the map about a year or so ago is when they changed it. ------------------------------------

CCP Is looking into something like this. I woudl recommend visiting the video section of the site, and there is a link on the Fanfest Dev discussions. One of them is about the graphics and what they are trying to do with the current and future technology of Graphic cards.
Your idea has merit, but I believe they have been working on it for longer than you think... they have just been limited due to the "horsepower" of computer technology until recently.
The first release of the new graphic was with Trinity. They have also been contantly working on upgrading all of the graphics to take advantage of the new videocards to improve the look and feel of Eve.
I do think they should do more to make the Eve Universe look better, but it is space.. and space in our little neck of the woods, it rather empty. :)
