ok,
i am a relative n00b to EVE, i hav some good cash and 3 ships and a fair few skills and i am wondering about this "Factory" thing.
I cant seem to find anything on it.
my current take is:
1) you rent a slot in a station or you build you own station :0 ! 2) you buy a blue print (BP?) and give it to the factory 3) you mine/buy minerals so the factory has something to build with 4) you set the factory off building stuff and then sell the items in the market?
Q1) is this correct? Q2) how much to rent? Q3) how much for blue prints? Q4) can you get BP's for small items such as lasers? Q5) do you HAVE to have a lab? Q6) damn !? i am confused !! lol
Some clarification or pointers to where i can find a "Tutorial" on factories and stuff would be real good !!
thanks to anyone that can help !! :)

<grumble>
The single most difficult part of that sequence is finding a damn Factory slot. Ditto corps offices and labs.

You hire the slot if/when you find one. The cost of the rent depends on the location (I've had rents at 9k and 1k)
Buy a BP, the cost of which varies depending on the item (I think its approx. 3x that of the finished item if you buy from the market - buying copies (which _cant_ be researched) will generally be much cheaper), the BP will list the mineral requirments (which can be reduced by 'researching' the BP at an R&D Lab). It has been said that there is a BP for every item in the game (but they may not be easy to find or available for purchase (i.e. rare loot only)
Install the BP in the factory slot once you have enough minerals in your hanger for at least one of the item (if you choose to make more than you have the minerals for it will just stop when it runs out)
Wait for production to finish (again production time can be reduced by 'researching' the BP)
So no, you dont _need_ a lab but it can help

wow ! thanks ! :)
sweet, so basicly it is just a question of finding somewhere that has a free slot then ! ;)
So is the rent like per day? or hour or what?
i dont need to build a factory or anything i can just "rent" it and feed it minerals by putting them in the "items" area in the same station then?
will it build anything? like if i got a BP for a battle ship it would build that? even tho i rented it?
sorry for all the questions and thanks again for the help. hopefully this thread will help some other people too.

Yes, a factory does NOT care what you build in it - the only things you can't build in them are Stations, Jumpgates, & Sentry Guns. Granted the capability to build those isn't in the game YET.
The process is simple - acquire a factory slot (note: you do NOT have to be a member of a corp, nor use the corp hanger as the source of minerals/bp) - Acquire a BluePrint - Acquire the minerals needed. The last step is the most complicated. You must put all of your accumulated Minerals and the blueprint in your hanger at the station with the factory, open factory panel, select the factory that you rented click on "Install" select the Blueprint and choose how many you want to make. That's it. Simple, ain't it?
Then, just wait for the production run to finish, and sell the finished products on the market.
Now let me clue you in on the best way to make money when producing items - DON'T slash prices outrageously. What you want to do is bring the items to where they would be in demand (same station if possible) and sell them either AT the current lowest price (-1 isk) or your cost plus a reasonable markup. Just keep an eye on the market, and adjust your prices when necessary. For example, if someone dumps 2 or 3 of your item for half price, and you can afford it, buy them, then resell them for the price you currently have your items selling for. You can completely corner the market this way, and ensure dominance.
Cost of rent is variable depending on location. Since the increase in Factory rentals, I am unsure as to what the range currently is. Also, it seems that factory rentals are NOT for the 3 days that the dialog states, but seem to last longer.
