Eve is in a complete lack of tactical enviroments, there is absolutely no difference from one section of space to the next, so this is why I propose space weather to add a tactical edge to your fighting enviroments.
Space weather would be the umbrella term for all kind off cosmic anomalys and enviroments which alter the magnitude of varying aspects of ships and modules.
Between diffrent systems and in different areas within a system you would find different weather systems. Each system could have their own weather patterns as it were so there would be noticible differences from one system to the next giving fleets/gangs a new tactical layer to take into consideration when planning their battles. For example stargate y in system x is currently in space thick with microscopic dust which severly limits the range and speed of ships, great for dropping your gang in for a close range battle with the enemy.
This also allows for new possibilties of depth in the game. Weather reading modules which scan the whole system and detect the weather affecting different parts of it. Means to predict weather, pos modules, degree of error? Ability to control the weather to a limited degree. Systems gaining reputations for their unique weather patterns. The possibilities are endless and the depth provided would bring a breath of life into a somewhat bland fighting enviroment.

Though a blatant advert for my own idea, I have proposed before one actual use for the environmental effects you propose could exist and be controlled: Tactical Environmental Effect.
Yes I'd love to see more in the way of effects in EVE, making space a little closer to... space. ___ My views may not represent those of my corporation, which is why I never get invited to those diplomatic parties... Environmental Effects

I don't think changing space 'weather' makes much sense... very few things that would effect system wide conditions would change with a speed relevent to a human life span, let alone days or weeks. A dust cloud isn't going anywhere quick... neither is a gas cloud... a star may be eratic in the amount of energy/radation released, but its not gonna be a day on, day off thing, it will be pulses of energy that propagate outward. A pulse could take days or weeks to reach outer planets...
The idea of static system specific, or even planet/area specific conditions on the other hand make alot more sense... Have the ships near a star/gas giant be effected by the radation... have ships far away from the star be effected by the reduction in light/energy/radation... You could have planetary rings, dust clouds, and even gas clouds/nebula, especially with starless 'systems'
The issue with dust/gas clouds in a fully formed star/planet system is that most/all will have already been sucked in by somethings gravity, either the star, the planets or the asteriod belts unless it is very newly formed... Some very dark systems without stars could be very interesting... ç¦ |

but lets say meteor rain, radiation caused by burst of distant supernova, etc. those seem like more dynamic env changes that don't happen too seldom
i like it :-)

Bla bla bla bla did you forget this is a science fiction game ? Anything is possible just because it is space does not mean that there can'be weather of sizes and duration.
Folks we currently do not even know enough of space science so how about we leave it behind think ahead.

good science fiction *usually* starts with our understanding of the universe and builds from there. It explores areas where there is little or know actual knowledge... We have a pretty good idea how solar systems work, and weather (changing with a time frame on the order of hours or days) is directly contradictory to that understanding... Sure eve does need to make exceptions to make the game fun, but we shouldn't throw in another one just to be more like fantasy MMORPGS with weather... ç¦ |
