why small guns on a BC? Why only 4? What are you doing with it?

For long range sniping Spike is great ammo because of its higher DPS. If tracking becomes an issue, the CN Lead ammo might be a better choice, because of the tracking penalty associated with Spike.

I guess he meant dual 150mm Rails. Since he is between Medium sized ammo.
I would honestly prefer spike over lead anytime of the week. ------- Nobody can be exactly like me. Even I have trouble doing it. |

general rule of thumb is
Spike= cruiser targets and above at range
Faction Ammo= ceptors at range (better tracking/chance of hitting)

Edited by: Merin Ryskin on 16/09/2008 08:44:35 You'll almost always use either CN Iron or Antimatter, the tracking hit from Spike is just too much against small, fast targets. Against slower cruisers at range, Spike M will hit, but missiles (the Cerberus especially) are generally better for those targets.
Oh, and 150mm rails suck, as do dual 150mm rails. The Ferox is hard to fit with 250mm IIs, but you should at least fit 200mm IIs.

1) 250s are better then 150s. 2) Ammo is about range to damage ratio - spike is high range low damage, faction anti-matter is close range high damage. you should carry multiple ammo types - other then spike, all your ammo should be faction with a heavy leaning towards anti-matter. 3) Get a drake if its pve, get a harbi if its pvp, get an eagle if its fleet. ----

Sorry I meant 250MM II Rail Guns (Obvious for Ferox)
But I guess the answers are the same

Edited by: BiggestT on 16/09/2008 11:14:54 The ONLY ammo i use on a fleet ferox (use 250mm's) is Spike M (for long range, at longer ranges tracking is less of an issue due to radial velocity etc) and CN Antimatter (fro short range its hte best, as youll swap ur tracking computers range scripts for tracking scripts and shld hit most >frig size ships)

You seem to forget it's not simply damage vs. range - the tracking (penalties) are extremely relevant too. It's difficult to hit an interceptor with Spike if he has a reasonable transversal because your tracking is a quarter of what it would be with other ammos, as mentioned above. Play with the tracking guide and you can see that you will almost certainly do much more damage on target with long-range faction ammo against small fast targets (especially interceptors which are the smallest and fastest). Spike is very useful for sniping anything else, though, and having faction AM in the hold is useful for situations where you end up firing from within 40km for whatever reason.

Rubbish. Neither the Drake nor the Harbinger compares to the Ferox in the latter's role, and both will do it worse (Harbi doesn't have the range, and the Drake doesn't have instant damage or the ability to hit interceptors). The Eagle is directly comparable to the Ferox and arguably better, but assuming that people can just pick up a HAC instead of a tier 1 BC is pretty arrogant. The Ferox is a solid ship for fleet sniping and I'd encourage pilots to lose a bunch of (fully insured) sniper Feroxes before getting an Eagle anyway.

Aye wise words. However i will only use spike M for sniping in a ferox as its the only ammo that, for this ship, gets to 150+km (Unrigged, im cheap ^^), Lower than that and i feel im gimping my range too much to make up for the poor tracking.. I ussually dont bother with ceptors and just focus on cruiser up if its that far away, or focus on a closer target with CN Antimatter..

Look, the Ferox is inferior unless you are very far out. . .if you showed up to a fleet op in a Ferox. . .well I would definatly call you out. Vulture. . .ok, Eagle. . .ok, Ferox. . .no ****ing way.
The Harbi has less extreme range, but the dps is so much higher and the tracking is so much better its not even funney. The Drake shares the tank, so if you want to be meatshield - then fly the drake at least. . .it does more damage. ----

It depends what you're using it for. If you want an anti-support sniper, then your choices are pretty much limited to Ferox, Eagle, Muninn or Zealot. And while the HACs may be better at this role, you still have the issue of HAC vs BC and the Ferox is actually pretty capable here.
Along these lines, this is why I'd always take long-range faction ammo on a medium-gun sniper, because one of your primary niches is being able to take out interceptors from 100km+. If you're just shooting at cruisers or bigger, then battleship snipers will generally be able to deal more damage from greater ranges with better tanks. I know it's not always feasible to say "get a BS instead", but rather am just pointing out that not at least carrying T1/faction long-range ammo can limit your options where you could have otherwise got a nice interceptor kill or two - possibly even saving a friendly who was tackled by them.
And if you're an FC that wants a Harbi instead of a Ferox, then you want a ship other than an anti-support sniper. In this case it's no different to turning up in a battleship when you wanted a tackler, or an interceptor when more DPS is called for. The Ferox and Harbinger are both good at what they do, which are different roles, and not interchangeable. As an FC you get to decide what roles you want; but just because you have no place for a certain role in your gang, doesn't make a ship that screams to be fitted for that role useless.

This.
The Ferox simply plays in a different league (and a different role) then medium-range damage dealers (which the other BCs, when fit for it, do admirably).
Of course Harbringer (and Hurricane, although it is somewhat inferior in this role due to arties having tracking+clipsize issues) is superior when you need a ship to fire in the 20-50km bracket. Also, at the 'far end' of these ranges - which is 50-ish to 60km for these ships, T2 long range ammo is useless completely compared to faction, and tracking plays a important role. However, these ships just won't work for 100-150km ranges, whatever you do with them - leaving Ferox as a 'niche' ship rather then 'outright useless'.
At any rate, yes, long range faction ammo is always worth carrying. It's absolutely superior for ships firing at 50-ish KM (for ships fit for this range, like medium range Harbringer/Hurricane), and it is superior for firing at frigate hulls at virtually any ranges (which is a role you can do in a sniper Ferox which a battleship just cannot do, so you shouldn't ignore it).
