Well.. train for a Hulk and T2 strip miners with T2 mining crystals. You can make around 30M an hour in 0.0

first advice, two afterburners is no better than one.
mining is just another way of generating income albiet boring in my opinion, it can be worth while if you mine in 0.0 or somewhere.

There is no Insta success in EVE. You are doing good atm and will be able to make around 20-30mil an hour in a maxed Hulk in a few month in 0.0 but not now and not in the ship you are in atm.

For a started, there is no instant isk print when you just start.
Fly a mining cruiser/frig instead of the badger. Yes you will have to dock undock more but it pays off.
You will get more isk/hour when your skills get better which takes time.
Ow and 1 afterburner is more than enough and when mining its 1 too much.

Mining in 0.0 takes a lot of planning and cooperation. You've got to be a member of an 0.0 alliance or corporation to start.
In hi-sec you'll make 5 mil an hour when conditions are right. You'll need a hulk, the aforementioned T2 strip miners and crystals, and a large industrial to haul ore and minerals depending on where you mine.
I have one account, and started off with training a combat main character and a mining/production alternate. By switching skill training and concentrating on one character for awhile, then the other, you can run missions and mine.
It really helps to get at least +3 implants in both characters to up your attributes and subsequently reduce your training times. Training up the various learning skills to increase your attributes is also a given.
It takes time, but concentrate on having fun and making Isk to buy the skills, then the ships, then the modules for the ships, etc, etc, etc......

As someone with max mining skills and a dedicated hauling alt, my personal experience has been that Empire mining maxes out at about 10 million an hour, and that includes doing ore trading on the side. In 0.0 you can make many times that easily if you have a good corp / alliance behind you, but that entails other obligations that you may or may not be able to live up to.
Mining will steer you toward Gallente ships, since barges and many Gallente ships make extensive use of drones, and will help you get into pvp better than mission running.
How so? It's simple - you will be visited by a steady of stream of people in frigs looking for fights. PvP frigs cost virtually nothing after insurance so what I started doing was keeping one in the system I'm mining in, and switching into it when I get flipped. I got really good at frig vs frig combat and even though I don't mine much anymore I do put those skills I learned to good use in FW, where I still prefer to fly frigs (or occasionally my Myrm - 5x T2 hammers w/ Drone Interfacing V do fantastic DPS ). When flying missions you'll rarely see another player, never if you mission outside of hubs. ---

350k isk in 2 hours? Dear god, YOUR DOING IT WRONG!
buy the Bantam, then the Osprey, then go to 0.0, mine with gangs. Make bank. Cry about hours lost mining in industrial.

also, make sure when you sell your ore that you get a good price for it... don't just accept the nearest buy order when there may be a much better one only a few jumps away. ~~~~ ~~~~ ~~~~ Take away the risk and it would make flying around in space utterly pointless.
Take away the flying around part and you make EVE into a space themed spreadsheet application. |

Being a miner is a lot like being the midnight security guard at a small town morgue. Make sure you have a book to read. Or some movies to watch. Or someone to talk with. Especially if you go for ships with huge capacity and low mining speed. If you go for fast mining and small loads, then you'll spend a lot of time dumping cargo into containers and then running back to get your hauler, etc, etc. Not very exciting. I tend to just mine in a huge ship all day long while I work. Keep eve running on one monitor so I can tend to it every 15/30/whatever minutes and run back to unload as needed.

Also, keep in mind that the winter expansion is said to be focused on the industrial part of EVE, I'm sure the miners will get some love in that one.

Maybe the mini rorqual! I think I recall at least more tradeable action in the npc realm.
op - Good luck! I also want to underline the advantage of moving ore/minerals around between markets when you aren't in the mood to mine. And also the power/fun of finding a corp and mining with others.

Yes, you can make a lot more. In HiSec I routinely make 8-9 million per hour in a well fitted Hulk. You can make more in 0.0, but without a corp it can get a bit dicey. This all depends on ore/mineral prices as well. Mining can be boring at the entry level, but there are those (me) who find high end mining challenging. When you have a Hulk with over 23000 m^3 cargo space it can be a challenge to keep the whole affair running smoothly. By smoothly I mean no short pulls, no missed loads, no wasted time. You need to redistribute the cargo constantly to keep the show on the road, as well as use the surveyor to it's best.
On a more practical note, dump the Badger and get an Osprey. Keep the Osprey until you can get a Covetor, keep the Covetor until you can get a Hulk. Under no circumstances get a Procurer, Makinaw or Skiff. If you want you can look at setting up a BS for mining, see Halada's guide, in fact, see Halada's guide period. This will give you a way to mine as well as do some missions simply by changing modules (except for rigs).
Keep in mind mining is not the best (ie. fastest) way to get ISK, it's certainly not the most fun either. But yes, you can earn a lot more than you're currently earning.

Mining in lowsec exploration sites and 0.0 (either exploration sites or regular belts) is -very- lucrative, and even in hisec it's pretty good income. Of course right now the -best- way to make ISK riskfree is to run missions, but really mining is more than enough.
Don't worry -too- much about what is the Absolute WTFOMGBEST thing because the nerfbat swings around every once in awhile. I'm sure once the industrial expansion hits you'll be glad you decided to mine.

Edited by: OneT on 16/09/2008 04:44:47 my personal pointer on newb mining would be get enuf Giant Secure Container's (GSC) to make up the size of your hauler internally
i.e if u have a 7000m3 hauler get 2 if your hauler is 10000m3 get 3 and so on
anchor said containers in a belt in a low population sytem (so as the belt is not striped b4 u get there) not forgetting to set passwords.
mine in the best mining ship u can find (i.e. highest mining yield) unless there is a one with specific mining bonuses in your chosen race and size (eg a ospray cruiser for caldari) pick the one that can run the most lasers.
mine the ore and transfer it to the GSC's in space come back in your hauler when there full
rinse and repeat.
this method will become in efficiant once u get to a barge or mining in a BS then ull need to either jetcan solo and pick up your ore for yourself (do this in a low pop system or youll get ore thiefed) or find a corp to mine with.
option 2 being the better one
also only refine your ore if u have refining skills of a decent level otherwise youll probably get more isk selling it whole

You can mine very well in a combat ship; you can't fight anywhere nearly as well in a barge.
Just remember that. Yes, you can spend 6 months becoming a godmode miner -- and then you have 6 months of skills useful only for sucking on rocks and inflating the cost of your clones. Or, you could mine in a battleship LONG before you see a covetor while skilling up to run L4s. Then run L4s for a year or so. At the end of that you'll be able to pew people in the face OR earn ISK OR a mixture of both.
Shooting a single 0.0 drone battleship will yield minerals worth as much as *20 minutes* of highsec ore sucking. Assuming you can find the ore to suck, don't get bumped around like a pinball, and so on and so forth. Draw your own conclusions.

I used to mine quite a bit. I have 2 characters that can fly hulks and haulers. One of them is a maxed out mining foreman. Now I only mine when I want a change of pace or a bit of relaxation. You can still make reasonable money mining in hi-sec but not nearly what I used to make. I miss the old times when isogen sold for >120 isk/unit and it was a mad dash to hit the belts on omber respawn days.
As others have said, the best isk for the effort right now is running L4 missions. Also, learn to salvage and manufacture rigs. In lower level missions, profit from salvage far outweighs what the agents pay you to run the mission. (Hint: missions against Angels and Sansha generally have the best salvage)
