As a Texan pod pilot, I am bent over holding my ankles as Ike looms about 36 hours away. If you pray, keep us in your prayers, if not, so be it.
Hopefully if Houston's power grid doesn't get ****d I will be yarring all weekend from a relatives house.
Stay safe, gulf coasters.

Indeed you;re all in my thoughts, hope you're all prepared and I hope the storm surge doesn't affect Galveston as much as some people are fearing.

Edited by: Kazuma Saruwatari on 11/09/2008 23:15:29 pfft, the issue here is in not the hurricane's strength, but rather the strength of your homes (of which you stay in) or at least the strength of the evac shelters you'll be eventually forced to run to.
Here in the Philippines, you'll be laughed at to the next town if you tried to build a house following hurricane-ready building codes from the USA. Down here hollow brick, rebar, and cement are the prime building materials for a home.
Would explain why when we let out our frustrations on the wall of our rooms, we end up with more than we can chew
Though seeing what Katrina can do, however...
Take care, be safe. Some additional tips as we are also being hit by a typhoon (pacifica hurricane, only difference is that they spin the other way):
-if you HAVE to move to higher ground, risking possible environmental damage to car and life, do it. Even if you dont get to an evac shelter, chances are that the place you just left would be underwater by that time
-stock up on essentials for at least 3 days
-If you are exposed (read: outside of a car/vehicle) near lightposts/power lines, be damn sure you're on rubber soles at least, and as quick as you can, GTFO of that area. Power could still be running through
-If in case your roof flies off, get immediately to any side of the house that still has a bit of roof, or get down to the strongest part of the basement.
-If you have ANY doubt (even a little) about the structural integrity of your home, GTFO
-If you have ANY doubt (even a little) about the water level reaching your home, GTFO
-If you can still travel 2-3 miles to the nearest evac shelter, consider it in emergency escape plans. If not, the distance may be too large to travel when being hit by the hurricane.
Good luck, and once its over, do take a grandeur at Mother Nature's power. Its quite humbling. -

It's not the zombie apocalypse man. No I would take 5 Katrinas over a zombie apocalypse.
In all seriousness, I live in Houston myself and just left further inland, good luck for everyone staying there. But seriously, more people should have some type of spacer in their sigs to show it's not part of the post.

Lol well you can't be too prepared. After all, I heard the government has a biological warfare facility underground only 2 miles outside of Houston city limits........
In all seriousness, good luck to those that will be effected by IKE (I'm landlocked, Indiana). ---------------------------------------------

Its 8pm and so far the wind has slightly picked up on the Northwest side of Houston. Galveston and the other beach area are getting hammered by the storm surge. New reporters and weathermen have 24hr hardons repeating themselves and trying to find debris on the ground. Power is still fine. Another 6-7 hrs before the eye hits but it looks like its going to die pretty hard once it makes landfall.
Canned food, batteries, spare water (we even filled the bathtub as an extreme precaution), and a few loads of 00 buckshot that was on sale (.45 ammo was going for $25 bucks!!! ripoff..). No looters and it looks like Houston cops are going to keep it that way. No pvp fun for us Funny though, until a few hours ago it was like a slow day in Houston. We even went out to get some fast food and other restaraunts were open till 6pm (hurrican makes landfall at 3am). I think some people got a little too complacent after the Rita scare.
Still ****ed since some morons are stuff on Galveston forcing rescue crews to risk their lives to save them. This is despite the authorities repeating "if you are in Galveston when the hurricane makes landfall DEATH IS IMMINENT" the night before. I mean how clear is that?
Well, house is boarded up and we are going to hang out in the front yard for a while with some food and Shiner Bock. Winds should get strong enough to knock out power around 12am-2am. Wish us luck!

I am on the west side of Houston. We lost power last night at about 2:30 am. The winds were 45-50mph for about 12+ hours. Gusts upwards of 90mph+
We got out around 10am this morning in the truck. OMG. The devastation around here is incredible. Buildings gone - trees tossed through cars. Its....rather humbling. I don't know how but after sitting in a 90 degree apartment all day with 90%+ humidity I was really not having a good day - and all of a sudden around 6pm the power came on. We are so very lucky. We are one of the few apartment complexes right now that has power. Even have internet.
But after driving around today - this is going to take weeks/months to clean.

Well the hurricane came and went. Lost power around 9:30am due to a transformer exploding while the other side of the street didn't lose power till 1am.
Night time saw some heavy heavy gusts of wind. We camped outside in lounge chairs drinking beer until it started to rain. Yes I know, very redneck but what else do you do with no power? By 3am it was bad with heavy rain, heavy gusts of wind, and debris from trees bouncing off of the boards covering the windows.
Next day the northwest side of town where I lived looked like a warzone. Debris everywhere mostly from our abundant tree population. Large and small branches strewn across yards and streets. I saw a 5ft thick tree snapped in half. Luckily it fell away from a house. Power completely out for the entire city. Estimates are looking like 2-4 weeks before power is completely restored throughout the city. Usually they give conservative estimates and I'm guessing about a week for most houses to get power back. They're really good about that work. I'm writing this from a friends house in Katy since my house is out.
No water pressure and they gave us the warning to boil all water before drinking to ensure our safety. My side got off easy. Downtown is worse and many of the business buildings are trashed. All of those glass windows didn't take the heavy winds and debris too well. Watching stuff from the local stations shows Galveston to look like a house of cards that collapsed. Many of those places were poorly built or reinforced. Hopefully after this incident they'll rebuild stronger. We have the technology.
After we cleaned up the area and started to head to we did see a ray of hope on the highway. Coming the other way down the road we passed a convoy led by a fleet of State Trooper interceptors. It consisted of a mobile command center, several National Guard trucks, and a line of 18-wheelers that I guessed to be about 3 miles long all headed into town. You could see massive generators and power equipment on the back of some of those trucks. The rest looked like food haulers. These guys were prepared and we aren't going to have a New Orleans here. Still though, a week without power in this Texas heat and humidity? 2 weeks? Forget that. I'm headed down to visit family in Corpus Christi.
Curfew from dusk to dawn. Some looting reported but no one shot yet. Looks like they are raiding $1 stores and other small businesses. They understand that attempting to loot a house is like signing a death wish right now. 00 buckshot was on sale at Academy sports stores. Unfortunately .45 ammo was $25 a box for FMJ's. That should be price gouging!

Edited by: Raziphan Rebular on 15/09/2008 23:45:28 Power is still out. I live north of Houston past Conroe and the woodlands even. Posting from a laptop and my dsl connection (which works despite no power). House is fine lots of limbs in the yard couple trees lost their tops. Only have enough gas for the generator for another day tops, running low on water as well. People have said we won't get power on for a few weeks. Seems all the focus is on Houston/coastal areas.
