Hey, a question.
I'm quite new and I'm looking to get into PVP asap. Right now I'm doing my learningskills and get some basic stuff done but already I'm bored with missions, not even logging in atm (playing Warhammer beta :P).
I'll probably stay here for the long run as it seems like a nice but difficult PVP centered game, so I'm thinking if there would be some use for me to have a second account. Most MMO's I play you end up having 2 or more accounts as it's just handy and gives an advantage.
What possible uses could I have as a PVPer (to be) to have a second account?

Account #1: PvP'er; get blown up lots.
Account #2: Trader/Missioner/Transporter to fund the ship losses for #1
I 'spose. :)

You're bored, barely logging in, and are looking to pay more per month for a game you don't seem to be playing much?

As said, playing Warhammer beta and level 1 missions are so easy in my Coercer it just gets a bit tedious. That and training up learning skills doesn't help the fun. Also, I don't like PVE much, never did, to me it's a neccesary evil.
So back to the question, what possible uses could a second account have for me, or should I just forget about the idea?

The main point of a second account is to have a different specialty at your beck and call as needed. If you're a miner who needs a hauler or defense. Or if you're a pirate or fighter that needs a money maker. Or if you just want to enjoy different aspects of the game and train simultaneously (since you can have three characters on one account but only one training at a time).
I haven't created a second or third account yet, but I can see that I may do so soon. I want to play with lots of aspects of the game and can't make one character an expert in everything. One will probably focus on PVP/fighting/piloting/pirating/whatever. The other will focus on mining/hauling... and maybe research/manufacturing -- eventually looking to run a corp (if I ever care to, which I probably won't).

I'm relatively new to eve but I've invested in a second account. One for PVP,Missions and defending my miner friends. The other one for mining & industrial to fund the ships I lose in PVP. Mining is an excellent hangover activity and is also a great screensaver.

1) I'm not sure how well a second account could be use during PVP. If you really knew what you were doing there might be things you could do but if you didn't I can see that as a good opportunity to lose two ships.
2) Multiple accounts works really well for mining. Say you have a combat guy and a miner. You put the combat guy in and industrial (everyone should have one so it's not that big a deal to spend the time training), then he hauls for the miner. Put a bookmark in a jet can to keep it open and transfer ore through the jet can into the hauler. The hauler then warps back with the ore when he's full and the miner can keep mining - though you risk losing the ore if you put it in the can while the hauler is gone.
3) Put the miner in a destroyer with tractor beams and salvagers, again an easy train and have him ready to follow the combat guy into a mission zone the combat guy has just cleared. On low level missions much of your ISK can come from selling your salvage.
If you train the industrial guy up enough, he can then start manufacturing some of the things you use cheaper than you could buy them - that and possibly sell the excess.
It helps in manufacturing and selling to have a good status with the base you're doing it at. The miner guy can run missions which the combat guy does most of the fighting on.
EVE, like most MMO's works best as a team game. It's really best to be part of a corporation and have other players helping you out but sometimes ... those guys aren't available or want to do something else. Having your own little team can really help. Two accounts played by one person will never be as effective as two accounts played by two different people - but - it can make the one person more effective than he might be on his own.

I started with this account a couple of weeks ago. It's a combat character, with an eye to PvP after making some money running missions. I started another trial account a few days ago creating a mining/industrialist character and I'm really enjoying that. So I think I'll have two accounts before long.
Clever move by CCP making it only possible to learn skills on one character per account. I don't see the point in making alts on the same account. Starting now, you're far enough behind as it is, without sharing learning time between characters.

Originally by: Edeard Black I don't see the point in making alts on the same account. Starting now, you're far enough behind as it is, without sharing learning time between characters.
Generally you wouldn't exactly "share" the learning time between characters, as one would generally be what you consider your 'main' and the alts would only get what time they needed.
Legitimate uses for alts with no/minimal training:
* Market price checkers: requires no skills. Just have your alt stationed in another region, then you can log them in to check prices on the market there. Can be useful to gather price data on trade hubs before a massive trade run quickly without having to fly out there, or if you're looking to buy a single expensive item (e.g. pirate implant, Marauder) you can compare prices between regions to see how much you could save.
* Scouts: Obviously not as effective as having a second account to do this, but if there's a particular chokepoint you go through regularly, you might want to have an alt stationed on one side of it. Then fly your main up to that point and dock, log on the alt and fly through the potentially-camped gate in a rookie ship, to see if it's clear. If it is, log your main back on and go on your way.
* Traders: With the trader careers, alts get pretty good starting skills in placing market orders, generally enough to get a decent start if you're just looking at getting a good return on mission loot rather than going into trading "full-time". And if you do decide to go further down that route, it can be useful to have an alt handle the trading; partly for anonymity if that even becomes relevant, partly for keeping separate accounts, and partly because the alt will always be at their trading station and won't get dragged halfway across the galaxy with other daily tasks. Plus your alt will already probably have better trade skills so the training time to reach what you consider acceptable when done on your alt rather than your main.
* "Specialist tasks": There's a few tasks that have a single specific requirement that can be done well with an alt. For example, there's a limit on the number of production slots you can run at once with one character, so once you hit this you can increase "your" limit by training up the relevant skills on an alt. As another example, you might want to have the ability to control POS weapons - this again is probably best trained up on an alt that you can just leave sitting at the POS and log on when there's shooting to be done. In many cases, a week or so of training will give you a very competant specialist character with little time out from your main career.
Now in pretty much all of these cases you get more advantage by having these alts on a separate account from your main (ability to do direct trade instead of having to use contracts/corp hangars, ability to have the alt haul for your main miner, or salvage for your main mission runner, ability to pew-pew the attacking fleet yourself while coordinating the guns with your alt), but these are all definitely workable uses for alternative character slots on an account.

I used one of my accounts purely as a hauling character - carting around all the crap that my main leaves all over the place (just leave it on auto pilot going around empire picking up stuff). Over time it's evolved and it's now about to step into a carrier. In doing so, she's also picked up the skills to almost maximise the full potential of a Dominix - so I now in theory have two PvP accounts \o/ --

I'm training my initial (this) account up in PVE with goal for PVP (can haul as well), while I started a second mining/industrialist account that is working up towards a hulk. Once I get that second account trained up sufficiently, I'll probably train the miner up to provide some type of cloak recon for main. -------
