Edited by: Linia on 04/09/2008 12:25:10 Hi there. I am personally a big fan of the Lazy Whale (afk missioning in Dominix) and my main use of drones the past 2 years or 3 have been Ogre II
Ive trained up for Sentry t2 drones and I would like to give them a try, but can anyone explain me how they work compared to Ogres? I know they stand still and fire like.. well guns? am I right? But whats the big deal about them except that they stand still?

Edited by: Lun Coldwell on 04/09/2008 13:26:27 Well from what I understand the reason why they are superior to heavy drones in L4 missions and gate camps for example are the following:
- Supposedly unlike T2 Heavy drones they can be hardy enough to actually tank for you. (mount a remote armor repper on your Domi for this) - They can take out large amounts of rats before they even get into range to you. (sentry drone pilots will swap types depending on range) - All damage types are available (also possible with T2 heavies but each require added training times) - Can quickly and easily be swiped back up into the Domi if they take to much damage, and then redeployed without having aggro. (as opposed to losing heavies as they slowboat it back to you for the same purpose) - Quick re-targeting and no travel times. (unlike T2 heavies where you lose time as they fly between targets)
ps. for gatecamps you can also deploy them near gate then fly outside a bubble yourself while still being able to operate the sentry drones that are within the killzone as cons warp in.
Hope this helps.

Lun pretty well nailed it. I haven't tried tanking a mission with them + a remote rep, but it seems possible given how close they stay to you. On a mission with a long trip to the next gate Sentries become something of a problem because you have to stay nearby, or come back to them, to scoop them before moving on.
All other factors aside, heavy drones are usually better for use at fairly short range (10km or so) where they don't have to spend a lot of time travelling. Beyond that range it starts getting better to use Sentries. The longer range Sentries will do less damage of course, but it's instant and there's no travel time involved. If you have a lot of targets at longer range clumped up, Heavies wouldn't lose a smuch time travelling so they may be an option.
As far as raw damage goes, T2 Heavies will do slightly more than T2 Sentries of the corresponding type because of the racial drone specialization bonus. However, you can improve Sentry drone damage with a rig, whereas there is no rig to improve any other drone type's damage. Keep in mind that this does not include DPS lost to time spent travelling so in many situations Sentries will have an edge on pure damage.
tl;dr version: both have their uses so knowing how to use both is a good thing. -------------------- "I am hard pressed on my right; my centre is giving way; situation excellent; I am attacking." - Ferdinand Foch at the Battle of the Marne |

Seems theyr like I expected. As tanking everything at all times isn't a problem for my Lazy Whale I think ill stick with my Ogre II's
Thanks for your replys

Advantages of Sentrys compared to ogres.
1. ogres have a long travel time. / Sentry damage is instant. 2. the lost rate of sentrys is far minor to ogres 3. when you rig youre whale with 2 sentry damage rigs gardes do more dps in EFT 4. Gardes2 ( also without rigs ) do in realcombat ( not EFT ) much more damage per second than Ogres2. 5. Warden2 do in realcombat at 50+ km more damage than ogre 2. 6. Ogre2 are only good when the enemy is around 20 km of youre whale. 7. With some omni trackings Garde are real good to all ships > frigs also at short range. 8. Switching from Warden to Garde cost you about 2 to 4 seconds ( how fast can you click it? ). 9. Switching from Garde to Hammer ( for frigs ) cost you about the same time as Nr. 8. 10. When you must warp out ( a thing that normally dont happen to a dom pilot youll have not to wait for returning sentrys ( Ogres will be lost ). 11. Long range sentrys work real well togehter with a long range 350th/425ths fitting and you can bring around 500 instant dps at 90 km.

You might as well carry both. When you fist warp in you can start shooting with sentries immediately. Once things get close enough that sentry tracking starts to become an issue you can switch to heavies.
Sentries can also be improved more by fitting than heavies can. (sentry damage rigs, omni tracking links)

The main issue with Sentry Drones is that they will slowly drift out of your scooping range, very annoying esp. in Carrier/Dread.
It's generally a good idea to spread them a bit so that they will not all have tracking issues with the current target even if it's close to you. They would be so much better if they would at least return to your ship a bit faster.
How to PVP: 1. buy ISK with GTCs, 2. fit cloak, learn aggro mechanics, 3. buy second account for metagaming

You seemed to only focus one point. I have never used them to tank, and it seems like an odd use.
- They do more DPS over the course of a battle, because they don't have to move to the next target.
- They have long range, especially if you fit a drone tracking/range mod. My wardens can hit things beyond my drone control range.
- They're very quick to recall if they start taking damage.
I use them a lot on my Dominix. I have sentries snipe at things until they get to less than 10km, then recall my sentries and let out my heavies. In missions where the NPCs start far away, they are very, very handy. You can sometimes wipe out half of them before they even get close to you. Sentries can easily one-shot frigates and destroyers at that range without having to chase them around like heavies would.

Sentries are simply said, awesome. I still only have sentries level 3, and in most cases (missions where rats dont appear right on top of you) they pwn. You lock targets, order your freeflying guns to attack, you see them pivot towards target... boom dead frig/dessy/cruiser, your sentries rotate to next target... boom headshot.
Only thing getting near to me in Serps Blockade were those annoying 275k bounty cruisers, and that's with tho waves racing toward me.
With Ogre IIs, even with one nav comp, you will occasionally see npc battleships outracing your ogres... its sad. (ok, not really outracing, but the catch up times can be lulz worthy).
Good for you to have decided to get the nice 20 something day skill that is the pure pwn of sentries level 5. Always use EVE Mission reports to check the mission you go to. If waves dont spawn on top of you, use sentries, pwn everything. Did I mention its awesome when your drones start doping damage the second their out of the bay? Unlike Ogres... heck even unlike stupid Raven's missiles...
Now. How to tank/rig dedicated sentry Domi? 3xCCC I 2xLAR II tank is so nice and forgiving...

An experiment that I witnessed when sentries were still new after the "drone nerf" was two Domi's "stringing" a set of sentries in two perpendicular lines near a gate, whilst a dictor stood by ready to drop a bubble when enemies started pouring in.
Suffice to say, it took out the two crows soon as they uncloaked (because not all of the sentries had tracking issues since they're spread out), and the rest of the enemy gang (couple of BC's, few BS's) with some support soon as the dictor bubble went down.
In fact, if the two crows werent shot down to begin with, we'd have taken more losses than was acceptable. The two scout crows were their only speedtacklers, lol. -

When you do go sentries (and tbh you should, tech II obviously since they are easily twice as good as the tech I's), always remember to fit an omnidirectional drone link. Costs you a mid slot, but you gain 20% range and tracking for your drones.
I use an AB, omni and 3x cap rach for missions, easily getting me to sniping range if needed (85km insta popping frigates with warden IIs).
For 0.0 pvp, sentry drones are the only ones that can hit POSses, they are great for RR BS gangs and even better for gatecamps (assign t2 sentries to tacklers, gets your domi/ishtar on killmails nicely).
For piracy/low sec pvp.. well drones get popped pretty fast by sentry guns, even t2 sentries on a domi with full skills tend to die fast, but since they don't need to travel you can scoop/drop em to break lock pretty easily .. ;)
All the stuff above does not necessarily reflect my corp, my alliance or even me.. Drone guide.. |
