Although everyone has this idea at some point when starting out, mining in an industrial is the slowest way you could possibly make money in eve. Get yourself a mining frigate, and even though you'll need to make less trips, you'll make vastly more money than you can in a badger. I assume you're caldari, so eventually try and make your way up to an osprey if that's what really interests you

For Caldari, you will want to get straight into an Osprey. It has 3 mining lasers which work fairly quick. Read up on jet can mining and have fun.

Even though I totally agree with the previous statements: Do not mine in an Industrial. It's brainlessly slow, I want to answer your question anyway:
To get the most out of your mining, train these as high as you can:
-Mining (duh) -Mining Laser upgrade (4 will do for most ships) -Astrogeology
That's it for mining in an industrial really. Now, if you actually want to make some ISK, then train up Caldari Cruiser IV and get into an Osprey. NOW we're talking mining.

No such thing as mining "fast" in ANY industrial. Think about it...
Sunno if you're just a regular badger or a Badger mark II, so will do this fairly generalized.
Say for the sake of argument your indy has 3000m3 cargo. Your minimg laser pulls 30m3 of or a minute. That's 100 minutes to fill it up.
OVER ONE AND A HALF HOURS of sitting there doing nothing.
Now, say you jetcan mine with a Bantam. A bantam gets 10% per level bonus yield, and let's say your at Caldari Frigate 3.
Same mining lasers -2 of 'em.So, you have 30m3 yield plus (30% of 30) = 39 units ore total per minute. *2, for 2 mining lasers - 78 units of ore/minute, over twice what the Badger will pull down. This of cournse not counting skills in Astrogeology or Mining - which I didn't count in the first example either :)
"The Bantam's hold is smaller!" you cry out. Well, that's where "jetcan mining" comes in.
Jettison the cargo in our hold, it's put into a temporary can. That temporary can will last on average about a hour and a half, realtime. Open the can once you've created it by right-clicking it and selecting "Open Container", then wait. Every time ore appears in your hold, put it in the can. Rinse and repeat until you've spent enough time. The can holds 27000 m3, and there's no way you'll fill it to the brim in a Bantam before it pops.
Go get your industrial, come back and haul the ore back to station. Equip your indy with Cargo Expanders so that you can haul more per trip.
Rinse and repeat - and welcome tot he career of a miner. You'll be using that technique if you continue as a miner up to the point you get into exhumers - and even then at times (gang-mining mostly).
Only thing you need to watch out for is "can-flipping" - ANYONE can open that jetcan and take the ore, or anything else you put into the can. There are cans that can't be flipped - you can only use them in .7 space and below, AND the hold far less ore (3900 m3 for the biggest one). How you deal with a can-flipper is up to you - just remember CONCORD punishes lawbreakers; it does not protect you.

1 mining laser, stack the lows with mining laser upgrades. Read Halada's Mining Guide for more information about implants and skills to maximise your mining speed.
Then go find an asteroid big enough to keep your industrial occupied for a while, activate the laser on it and into AFK mining. You'll need a Survey Scanner to figure out which asteroids actually have the stuff you need, in quantities that make it worthwhile parking your industrial off the rocks instead of a cruiser.

Edited by: Case Kovaks on 31/08/2008 12:58:59 I did the maths on this one a while ago, even using a large hauler and leaving it on all day while at work it just isnt worth it.
You will pull in much less than a mill, with the smaller haulers ~100k-300k at best. This is peanuts really, you will get the same income by spending 15m to run a level 2 mish as leaving large haller with cargo expanders in a belt all day. You need to add to this that you will need multiple roids to fill the hauler which means attention during the cycle.
Want to make some money? Train Astrometrics 3 and fit a Probe with cargo expanders. Drop some fathom scan probes at the Sun in Dodoxie or another mish hub and hit scan (Ships + Drones). Find Ravens/Megethrons/Battleships that arnt at a station or in line to a stargate and warp into them. Two choices now, salvage the wrecks for scrap, trit bars sell for 250k now, cap consoles for 350k etc, or just look at the loot. Once you find a drop over 1m then ninja it and warp out before they can shoot. Easy 5-10m an hour, I've made 25m in 15minutes doing this
EDITED: because I failed at spelling.

Until you can fly a Hulk, AFK mining in an industrial with MLUs will get you much more ore than any other activity. Point laser at asteroid, go do housework for half an hour while the ship fills the hold. The only risk is suicide gankers, or other people mining your asteroid from under you.

Don't listen to the naysayers! A badger is your ticket to a wealth of ore. Here's how you set it up:
Quote: [Badger, ore-thief] Warp Core Stabilizer I Warp Core Stabilizer I
ECM - Multispectral Jammer I ECM - Multispectral Jammer I ECM - Multispectral Jammer I ECM - Multispectral Jammer I
Miner I
What you do is go from belt to belt, looking for other people mining. Some of them will have cargo containers nearby... these people are "jetcan-mining", that is they jettisoned some ore and are using the "temporary" container (created when you jettison something) as a holding place for ore. Their intention is that an industrial (like yours!) should come along and pick up that ore.
That is precisely what you will do.
The setup above sacrifices some potential cargo space by using warpcore stabilizers in the low slots instead of cargo expanders, but its advantage is that it is able to escape into warp should your unwitting assistant miners attempt to PVP you. If a gang should gang up to kill you, the ECM units give you some hope of escape by jamming their targeting computers. The mining laser I added because I didn't have anything else to put in a high slot. However, you can imagine how you might use it for "camouflage" as you inch closer and closer to a miner's jetcan.
Go crazy!
Another tip: if you see a "giant secure container" be sure to zoom the camera in and check if the lights on it are red or green. If they are green, the can is not anchored, and you can take the whole thing! |
