OK I am a miner and jet canning is the ONLY viabel way to mine. But to us secure containers NOTHING can be near you for 5km. With wrecks and other such items easily in the ares placement is a considerable pain. Anyone else think we could use a small change to the restrictions. How about no deployments within 5 km of an asteroid, others corps/players cans, and stations.

Sure, many people think that. Some even complain to CCP now and then, like you. Here we even completely agree with you.
But CCP ain't changing anything. We've asked in the past.

No it's not the only viable way. It's the most risky and the most profitable at the same time, however. Alternative include cargo-expanding, stand-by hauler alts to pick stuff up as soon as you jet it, mining in areas without ore thieves and so on and so forth.

How about no ?

You have plenty of viable ways: 1. solo mining with frequent docking: safe+ efficient- 2. solo mining with a jetcan: safe- efficient+ 3. mining in a group w/ haulers: safe+ efficient+ 4. mining in a group w/ haulers, gang boosts, skilled refiners, Rorqual etc: safe+ efficient++++!
In sum, the only reason you are jet-canning is that you lack social skills. Frankly, I don't know why anyone would mine at all other than for the social experience.

How about stowing your ore in a rat carcass? Would anyone think to look in a serpentis rookie wreck in high-sec?

Unless they changed this, you can't transfer cargo to a wreck.
And OP, thievery is an intended feature of the game. If you want to avoid it while mining solo you either HAVE to take a hit to your efficiency or you HAVE to find other people to mine with.

CCP did make a major change in this area not long ago.
Previously, secure cans stayed anchored forever. Now if they're not regularly used, they just disappear. So all those abandoned cans out there just vanished after a month, it is getting a little better and at least we know the cans are being used, not just left by someone who's possibly not even playing anymore. ______________________ Isn't it time you learned to fight back? Another thing you could do when placing your GSC's is to use the tactical overlay view. Zoom out a little and you can better judge the distance between the roids and structures when deploying your GSC. And do not forget to anchor it ASAP after deployment.

Jetcans are not secure containers. Giant Secure Containers are not jetcans.
Jetcan mining:
- Bookmark an asteroid
- Drag bookmark to cargo
- Jettison bookmark
- Park hauler next to jetcan
- Drag mined ore to jetcan
- Hauler drags ore from jetcan to cargo hold
If you don't have a hauler sitting next to the can, this is how jetcan mining works:
- Bookmark an asteroid
- Drag bookmark to cargo
- Jettison bookmark
- Drag mined ore to jetcan
- Ore thief drags ore from jetcan to cargo hold

Well, I live mostly in low sec/0.0, so I have other things to worry about than petty suicide gankers, but yes, of course. If you can't afford to loose it, don't do it. :D
