nightmare has better tracking and fits a godly shield tank with plenty of room for heat sinks, the tracking bonus helps tachyons as well, paladin has the tractor beam bonus which helps a lot with looting and salvaging

Id say Paladin with its 100% damage bonus and +5% capacitor capacity bonus. I also think they look sweet..

If you don't loot / salvage... nightmare is seriously badass

DPS is exactly the same, but I prefer the paladin.
The rep bonuses mean you can usually single rep tank anything you want, leaving room for heat sinks when fitted with auxiliary nanopumps.
If you spend the isk on a deadspace rep, then you can usually fit 2-3 heat sinks and out damage the nightmare.
Then again, the nightmare DOES have a ridiculous tank itself with 7mid/5low when fitted well.
The question is, then, do you want ridiculous shield tank which is cap intensive? Or a nice armor tank that runs from uptime to downtime?

Outdamage the nightmare...? My shield tank isn't that cap intensive, tanks any missions just fine, and puts out insane damage. Also tracks incredibly well even with Tachyons...
Nightmare is pretty skill intensive ot get max benefit from it, 2 races BS V, but it's hot as hell

It's not so clear cut. The nightmare is better to pimp out, that is for sure, and the tracking bonus is sexy. The paladin is nice for looting though, with the 40km tractor beams, and if nothing else the Paladin can leave the wrecks in a nice pile, ready for a salvage ship to clean up. DPS between the two is the same (not taking the tracking bonus into account), and both can easily fit 3 heat sinks. I would probably lean in favor of the Nightmare being the superior ship, but I would say go with the Paladin if you want to take advantage of the tractor beam bonus, or if you want a cap stable ship.

NM can be cap stable and perma run a large booster, which should be enough for most missions. After all, by time you can fly it, you really outta be able to handle the missions. Still fits the heatsinks and the like. The tracking bonus is what wins it for me, plus, it is incredibly sexy, I mean come on, its vertical with spikes!

I favor the nightmare as well heart, I'm just saying there are a few things that go in the Paladin's favor, haha. I've loved the nightmare for a long time though, even before I knew it was a badass ship. Vertical and spikey ftw.
