Edited by: Kalahari Wayrest on 28/08/2008 02:08:14 loadsa stuff, but recently I've been into stuff with more thoughtful lyrics than neccesarily the music itself (though if I hate the music I'm unlikely to appreciate the music...) Examples are Box of Rain by the Grateful Dead "walk into splintered sunlight /Inch your way through dead dreams/to another land" and Ripple by the same "There is a road/no simple highway/Between the dawn and the dark of night/And if you go no one may follow/That path is for your steps alone."
Also Hallelujah by Leonard Cohen (the cover by Rufus Wainwright is also good, a lot of people seem to consider Jeff Buckley's version definitive but I can't take to him for some reason)...I find it really bleak and chilling, but the lyrics are great - particularly "I've seen your flag on the marble arch/Love is not a victory march/It's a cold and it's a broken Hallelujah." Also in one of the covers: "I've heard there is a god above/but all I've ever learned from love/is how to shoot at someone who outdrew you."
revolutionized I'd probably have to go with Elvis, but I hate his voice and don't like his songs
Maybe All Along the Watchtower? I've liked every version I've heard, the original Dylan, Hendrixand the one on BSG
political impact - probably political punk like Bad Religion, though despite the utter naivetT I think Imagine by Lennon kind of encapsulates my feelings.
Composed? Hrm. Given this is personal preference, a couple of recentish Nine Inch Nails songs (Right Where It Belongs and Zero Sum)and a remix of Final Fantasy 7s Cosmo Canyon probably due to the affection I have for the game, but I like what they did with the song technically.
The End by The Doors is astoundingly iconic as the intro to Apocalypse Now (though I wasn't that keen on the rest of the film)
and this hasn't even touched on most of my favourate bands I think my favourate band ever would be Eels, but damned if I can pull out a specific song.
and no I couldn't pick one song, so just aligned them to your criteria __________________________ Indulge Me Consider Yourself Indulged - Immy ♥ Wow immy scored - Xorus

All very good choices there. As for thoughtfull lyrics, this was a great one to come out of the 60's Sounds of Silence _______________________________________________ RuntimeError: ChainEvent is blocking by design, but you're block trapped. I actually really liked some of the lyrics, the "To the neon god they made/...'The words of the prophets are written on the subway halls'" bit, but I find something profoundly unsettling about Simon and Garfunkel. I think it's the glassy stares, like no one's home... They could easily be aliens. __________________________ Indulge Me Consider Yourself Indulged - Immy ♥ Wow immy scored - Xorus

HAHA!
They are definitely to lovey dovey for me, but they had some fantastic lyrics so I will give them that they are wise even though I hate that tree hugger shit. hehe. _______________________________________________ RuntimeError: ChainEvent is blocking by design, but you're block trapped. I was actually considering a Simon and Garfunkel song for my choice before I ended up with Piano man. While that song is amazing, it's not the one I would have chosen though.
I love how he mixed a really old song with one of his own to really give it a new meaning. In terms of performance I love how well each voice harmonized with each other. All in a live publicly televised setting. It sucks that I wasn't alive when did happened, I would have loved to see something like this as it happened. Scarborough Fair/Canticle

As far as Video game music, I'm going to have to give it up to Jeremy Soule for the great work he did with Supreme Commander, and more importantly Morrowind

This is from my lighter side of music I listen to. This song means more to me then I can even put to words.

Adagio for Strings.
Happy or sad, it comes in many different guises.
Standing to a man in silence to the original composition after 9/11
Dancing on the streets of kavos half blinded to tiesto's rendition.
Ofc some might remember it's inclusion in probaly the most wonderfully scripted computer game ever, no need to mention the name on that

Day off tomorrow so I broke out the 12 year old Macallan I keep for special occasions, like Sundays, and listening to Dave Matthews. This is another one of my favorites. Check out the guitar work of Tim Reynolds...

A few of my favorites:
"Need You Like A Drug" by Zeromancer "You Make Me Feel So Dead" by Pitbull Daycare "Forever Knight" by Bell, Book, and Candle "Stripped" by Depeche Mode (the live version kicks ass) "Everyone I Love Is Dead" by Type O Negative
Just a few. |
